Smith Wins Cap as All Whites Defeated By Ronaldo's Portugal
Saturday, 24th Jun 2017 18:25

Tommy Smith won his 35th cap as New Zealand were beaten 4-0 by Portugal in their final game at the Confederations Cup in Russia.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the Portuguese in front from a controversial penalty in the 33rd minute before Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 four minutes later.

Andre Silva netted the third with 10 minutes left on the clock and Nani made it 4-0 in injury time.

While Smith, 27, played his third full 90 minutes, Blues youngster Monty Patterson, 20, who has been capped 13 times, scoring once, was an unused sub having come off the bench in the two previous games.

The All Whites ended the tournament having been defeated in all three of their games, but having put in creditable displays against sides well above their 95th place in the world rankings.

Smith and Patterson will both be allowed additional time off before returning to Town with the squad due back at Playford Road for the start of pre-season training on Monday.

Well done Smithy,as you got your wish to play against Ronaldo.

However Tommy was given the runaround by the far superior Portugese side, from what I saw on ITV4;although didn't see the whole game.

Don't know how his broken holiday will affect him this season;but at least there are not any Ronaldos in the Championship.
