McCarthy Challenges Celina to Emulate Lawrence and Fraser
Monday, 26th Jun 2017 17:50

Mick McCarthy has challenged Manchester City youngster Bersant Celina to emulate Ryan Fraser and Tom Lawrence’s loan spells at Portman Road during the 2017/18 campaign.

The 20-year-old Kosovo international expected at the club to undergo a medical and complete the formalities on his season-long loan switch in the next few days in time to travel to Ireland for the training camp at the Carton House Hotel in a week’s time.

Bournemouth wideman Fraser caught the eye during 2015/16 with the Blues, while Leicester's Lawrence top-scored with 11 goals last season.

“We’re trying to get that done, and hopefully we will,” McCarthy said regarding the Celina deal.

“We’ve been looking for a replacement for Tom Lawrence. No pressure on him there, is there? Player of the year in every department.

“But Tom came in and I can’t remember everyone thinking that that was the best signing in the world.

“We’d had Ryan Fraser the year before and how good he was, but yet I never hear them mention Ryan. So I’m hoping that Bersant Celina can do that.

“He’s a similar type, right-footed, left winger, can play in behind the striker but I really want him to play in that wide left area, hopefully in a four and if necessary in a three.”

He added: “We watch players all the way through the season in terms of lining them up and having wish-lists and things that we might be able to do and things that we can do.

“We had Ryan Fraser the season before last, we had Tom Lawrence this season playing in that position and we’re all hoping he’s going to emulate them and be a great player for us.”

Mick - possibly because RF got injured prematurely

Fraser is and was the more gifted footballer.

Mojo - what's your point, I don't get it? Ryan Fraser was great, as was Lawrence. And it's fair to say when they were signed, most of us said: who? Never hear of them. FFS, give the club a break (or read the story before getting negative) So far so good, in my humble opinion.

The Snake.I get what Mojo is saying.Mick says in quote that he never heard 'them'(presumably us fans) mentioning Ryan Fraser; and Mojo says possibly because RF got injured. He returned to his parent club Bournemouth for treatment in April 2016.

I think that Mr McCarthy is wrong.Yes we all agreed how good he was,and sung his praises;so he wasn't ignored as the Manager infers.

Two pops at the fans in your first day Mick?

What I would say to this, is let's not find ourselves being so reliant on the fact of one individuals goals. Had we 'not' had Lawrence's goals where would we have found ourselves?? I'd say certainly League One. Goals need to come, from all around the pitch.

MM needs to check his mouth this season
I take this as a pop at the fans again
Clkearly he is more sensitive than he makes out, and all the criticism has hurt him
It was all due however
Big Mouth Strikes Again, as Morrisey might say

SO let me get this right. Celina, a 20 year old loan player, is expected to come in and be a star and play every game.

Whereas our own players of a similar age are routinely described as being unable to play week in week out.

What am I missing here Mick ? Is there something wrongh in the conditioning or development of our own players ?

PS: Rhetorical question. This kind if inconsistency never gets addressed by the Club or raised by Radio Suffolk or TWTD for that matter. Mick can do what he likes and say what he likes and being football, if we play better football and maybe even win, then no one will care.

Whatever MM says he'll just get shot down in flames and the season is still over a month away. Just as well for him that he doesn't care what people think.

The_Snake - sorry for not replying sooner. You are right in that I misread the article to begin with. I see now the point MM was trying to make was that because TL did so well we didn't really miss RF at all and that is a fair point. I read it to begin with where MM says fans never mentioning Ryan as his value when he was here being dismissed, which seemed unfair. RF played well against us the season Bournemouth got promoted so I think he was well know to fans and broadly welcomed as an exciting loan signing. If you read my previous posts you will see that I am far from negative about Ipswich. I have never called for MM's head and I actually think he is doing a very good job for the most part considering the constraints and shackles that he has had to work with for the last five years. For what it is worth I also think it has been a very exciting start to the transfer window as well and I really hope we kick on this season and the fans return.
