Town Closing in on Huws Signing
Tuesday, 27th Jun 2017 19:48

TWTD understands that Town’s deal to sign former loanee Emyr Huws from Cardiff City on a permanent basis could be completed as soon as tomorrow.

Yesterday, Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock revealed that his club had accepted an offer from the Blues for the 23-year-old Wales international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Portman Road.

The fee is likely to be Town’s second seven-figure outlay of the summer, probably in excess of the £1 million paid to Rangers for Joe Garner, the biggest sum spent by manager Mick McCarthy since he took charge of the Blues in November 2012.

Speaking at the first day of pre-season training yesterday, McCarthy said he’d be delighted to get the deal done.

“We’ve made a bid and had it accepted by Cardiff,” he said. “He was an outstanding player for us.

“Tom Lawrence stood out like a sore thumb with the goals that he got, but from Emyr coming in in the window in January, he was brilliant, really outstanding.

“And I don’t think I’ll ever forget the goal he scored against Newcastle that probably rubber-stamped our survival in the league, so if we get him back I’ll be thrilled.”

McCarthy says everything seemed to click for Huws during his loan spell at Town, in which he scored three goals in 13 starts, following an unsettled period of his career having left Manchester City after progressing through their academy.

“He was a Manchester City player, he was on loan at Birmingham, he was at Huddersfield, he’s been at Wigan, he’s been to Cardiff.

“Sometimes you find a place where you’ve enjoyed the football maybe, you find a manager who trusts you and lets you play and it just fits.

“And I think it did for Emyr and hopefully we can get those performances that he showed last season and better than that if he signs permanently.”

If you had to choose between Huws and Benyu it's a no brainer. I think this massively helps boost confidence around the squad knowing what we're likely to get with Huws here, rather than hoping a youngster lives up to the hype.

The contrast in attitudes is so stark too, it seems on the day we got good and bad news this development and presumed signing tomorrow is a massive positive.

No comments yet about "no-one wants to play for Dino" etc? Strange that!

Brilliant news. All we need now is a Murph replacement, a left-footed centre-back and a right-winger and we will be pretty much sorted. Maybe another creative midfielder is needed as well. Good start to the transfer window for once.

We are all glad that Huws is coming but still sad that we seem to have lost a promising youngster, i dont think the two are linked.

So glad we are getting him in. Only played half the season but was amazing for us in that time and some great goals (which we need from our midfield). Young and hungry what I like to see. Let's just try get that lad from Hibs now ;) and then Taylor and a proper replacement for Murphy and I think we will be good to go (maybe a backup RB if Emmanuel goes out on loan)

Excellent news. I was beginning to worry that Huws was out of our reach, so it is a real boost to get him in the door. To sign an established player who is an international at the age of 23 is really good, and such a positive compared to most signings of recent years. If he costs £1M+ that is an investment as Huws could be worth much more in years to come.

Garner, Huws and (hopefully) Celina on loan is a good start to our summer business, but please let's keep it going. We still need to replace Murphy with a good quality target man who can score goals. We could still do with extra quality in midfield. Let's push on to develop a side that can chase promotion rather than mid-table.

Looks like this is going through, given the lad probably could have got a lot more at Wolves so really pleasing he's thinking with is boots and not and his wallet. Goes without saying I want him to do well but I hope he becomes a Town legend as like the cut of his jib thus far.

Needed

1x utter goal scorer
1x CB as cover.
1x CMF one that can tackle and created if poss. A Pirlo of the Championship if you will.

Left back and a right winger would be nice if budget allows

Would leave me v content.

Expect us to resign Taylor, good player but injury record makes me think we should look elsewhere.

Regardless I am pleased wer'e nearly 3 deals (4 if you count Spence) done and hopefully more to come.

Will he put in an improved bid for Mcginn? At least another 3 quality signings would be good!! COYB

This is indeed very good news. When you think of all the £1million pound plus players bought by the previous two "managers", the majority were expensive gambles that did not pay off, mostly ending with us letting their contracts' run down or effectively paying them to go.

The potential signing of Huws feels different though. He is the right age, has an excellent attitude, knows the club already and has the potential of being a key player for us next season and beyond and is just what we need right now in midfield. And as Mark says, he could potentially be worth much more in a couple of years which is another big plus.

Fingers crossed the deal is done soon as this would be a much needed boost to fans.

This is the perfect example of bringing someone in on loan who's eggar to impress, they do well & in summer we sign the player in a pernament deal: I honestly thought we would be priced out especially wages as he took a pay cut to join here: we have lacked a goal scoring midfielder for years: you have to go back to the days of Norris,Miller,Holland: I'll be delighted when he is announced: I still think we need another Striker,Winger & Central defender (Taylor) & if Emmanuel leaves on loan another Full-Back

I have got to say here that with the new additions, loanee & new contracts, things are looking extremely positive and exciting for the new season ahead, despite that rather dark large cloud which comes down from Yorkshire somewhat blighting things, and hovering above!, so trying to keep it all things positive at least with the 'Dreaded Dino in charge it doesn't hurt so much when we lose!!!. (Lol)

Decent signing but I'm not getting carried away. Huws and Spence were both here 2nd half of last season and were still awful so they aren't actually improving the squad.
The Kosovan lad looks promising but Garners record in this league is bang average, as it stands I still see a 14th to 22nd finish.

Very pleased if the signing is confirmed as I would imagine it will be.
A great confidence booster.
Much as I disagree with much of what Mr Carthy does, he certainly has good contacts.
I am sure his good relationship with Neil Warnock has helped us with this potential signing.

Let us look forward and not back and have a fresh start with the addition of at least another three of the Huws type quality. No journeymen or never been men just to make up the numbers.

The Norwich game you wouldn't have thought Huws was on the pitch he was so quiet, I'm not getting carried away either if we do sign him as I have my reservations. But would certainly be a better signing than a few Mick has picked up in the last year or so.
