East Anglian Derbies and Fulham Trip Switch Dates
Wednesday, 28th Jun 2017 16:23

Town’s two derby games against Norwich City have made their now familiar switch to Sunday lunchtimes, while the Blues’ away match at Fulham has moved from New Year’s Day to the following evening, Tuesday 2nd January (KO 7.45pm).

The Canaries were due to be in Suffolk on Saturday 21st October but that match will now be played at noon the following day on police advice.

Town’s trip to Carrow Road will now take place on Sunday 18th February, also at noon, again on police advice. The Fulham match has been rescheduled at the request of the Cottagers.

The Blues says they have not put forward any further fixture amendments with the convenience of supporters, particularly during holiday periods, very much in their thoughts.

"There were discussions to move the Derby County game at Portman Road [forward] a day to Friday 29th December in order to give the players an extra day of rest in what is a very busy schedule,” new club secretary Stuart Hayton told the club site.

"However, we decided it would be of greater benefit to our supporters to keep the game on Saturday 30th.

"There will also be no change to our Easter Monday game against Millwall for similar reasons, despite playing Birmingham City at St Andrews on the Saturday prior.

"We saw how much the supporters enjoyed last season's clash [against Newcastle] by turning up in numbers and providing a great atmosphere, so we want to try and replicate that again."

Despite Town having no plans to move any other games, fixture dates and kick-off times are still subject to switches if Sky Sports opt to screen them live.

Town keeping the Derby game on the Saturday with brum still the Monday sounds like it actually had supporters from afar in mind. Good work Town.

Shame we have 4 midweek away games though. Including Sheffield Wednesday which was the best trip last season by a mile

What a shame again that the East Anglian derby will be spoilt by mis-placed police advice. Any trouble between the fans in recent years has been very limited There will be no chance, as usual, for the excitement and anticipation to build through the day as I remember it of old. Again, there is no understanding or acknowledgement that fans travel long distances to and to get to Portman road on a Sunday for a noon kick-off is very difficult and what's the chance of train engineering work and no trains at all ? It has happened before !. I live 15 miles away yet I will struggle to get there on time as the trains on a Sunday don't start running early enough. Police in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, London and most other places are happy to allow derby matches to be played at more civilised times including the traditional Saturday but Norfolk and Suffolk Police seem incapable. This is an issue that really winds me up - it really spoils the day. Good policing is surely allowing an event to take place as close as possible to it's intended form - not to alter it to the point that it does not fully resemble what it should, is dumbed down, passions dimmed and then call it good policing. I am sorry to say that the Ipswich Norwich derby is a pale shadow of what I remember to a point where the two games at Portman,Road have not even sell-outs which I find highly embarrassing for the Club irrespective of them being televised live - all the more reason to go in my book so the World can see that we do actually care and have some pride when playing out arch rivals that is considered the second most intense rivalry in English football. What a shame it would be if it dropped down the list.

For what it is worth some insight...

Police don't get double time for working Sundays. And if they did the people making the request to change the date - senior officers - would avoid spending the extra money.

Disappointed re the Fulham game myself. Despite reservations looking forward to new season. Supporting ITFC really is addictive!

COYB!

It would be nice if just for once someone at the Club said to the Police 'thanks for your advice but we will leave it as it is'.

I would rather not have Derby games at all than play them on Sunday lunch times. What a pile of crap as usual. Wont bother yet again. Thanks Suffolk/Norfolk clueless police.

Understand the frustration at the change of Fulham date however Trains are worst than normal news year day so change to 2nd will make travel easier.

WTF is the point of scheduling AFTERNOON kick-offs on a BANK HOLIDAY when you are just going to move them to an EVENING kick-off on a WORKING DAY.
Given that we could potentially be taking 3000+ to this game Town should have said no.

When is the last time there's been any major trouble with the Norwich games? TBH it's just banter.
