No Reciprocal Away Price Cap With Leeds
Wednesday, 30th Aug 2017 13:31

Leeds United are among the clubs not taking part in Town’s £25 reciprocal away ticket price cap initiative with adult prices for the game at Elland Road on Saturday 23rd September having been set at £37.

In June, Town wrote to their fellow Championship clubs offering to put a ceiling of £25 on seats at Portman Road for a rival side's fans if they agreed to do the same when Town's supporters visit their stadium.

The Blues' next away opponents QPR previously confirmed that they have turned down the proposal, chief executive Lee Hoos stating: “The running costs of our stadium are substantially different than Ipswich and this price point simply doesn’t work.”

Adult away prices for the game at Loftus Road a week on Saturday, which are currently on sale from ITFC Direct, are £31, £28 and £26.

Middlesbrough also rebuffed Town's offer, saying at a Supporters Forum in July that they believe their “overall approach to pricing is reasonable and competitive”.

Adult away tickets for their home draw with Preston on Saturday were £30. Town visit the Riverside on Saturday 9th December.

Barnsley, Birmingham, Brentford, Bristol City, Bolton and last Saturday’s opponents Fulham are among those to have agreed to the reciprocal arrangement, while adult away seats for the trip to Derby on Tuesday 12th September cost £22.

Last month, Town announced that 12 clubs had agreed to their proposal with others still considering their response.

Fans of clubs who haven't agreed to take part in the initiative will pay the standard prices for the upper tier of the Cobbold Stand - £30 and £35 - rather than the proposed £25 when they visit Portman Road.

37 quid? Crazy! Rip-off Leeds.

I don't think we should retaliate and charge them OTT prices at PR. Whatever we might think of Leeds, we shouldn't punish fans for the greedy decisions of their club's owners. Stay classy.

'Make sure we charge them double'!!

It's the club that has chosen not to accept the price cap not the fans!

It's the first season that we've offered to cut our own astronomical away fans prices. We've hardly been the leading light for cheap football!!

It,s fairly simple , charge any club over the £25 price point a reciprocal charge whatever we pay their fans pay here , how hard is that ??.

As a long in the tooth supporter of 40+ years standing, I have a very pragmatic view of this.
The prices at PR remain a rip off so I don't attend as often as I used to, which I regret in some respects. I blame the club, and their ongoing disconnect with the community/paying public for this.

If, in my opinion, an away game has been overpriced for visiting fans, I don't bother going. I blame most clubs for this, including ITFC. There's effectively a cartel in place here that keeps prices high. Everyone looks at what everyone else is charging and adds a wee bit more. It's a disgrace that's been building for many years, and is, I think, a direct result of the ludicrous amounts of money accumulated by the top clubs, that is not shared fairly, leading to clubs ripping fans off and still not being able to compete.

I do applaud and appreciate the steps taken by IM/ME to try and encourage a £25 reciprocal price, but to be blunt, while it's a start, it's just not enough.

The £20's plenty campaign has been in place for some time now, and is [I think] an initiative aimed at the Premier league. If £20 is enough for the top league then I would suggest that £18 is sufficient for the Championship.

Football is rotten to the core. I love the club, and I love the game, but the greed and endless excuses for ripping fans off are shocking.

ITFC like almost any other club [bar a few notable exceptions] only offer any respite when they think their brand will suffer if they don't do something - it's no surprise to me that we were thrown a few crumbs following last seasons laughable season ticket fiasco.

With that said, I would not advocate charging any more to Leeds fans in retaliation or any other clubs supporters for that matter. Part of the game's appeal is the atmosphere - if away support is discouraged, then that's just another nail in the coffin. More fool football.

Don't worry, people will still pay it. It is a rip off as many agree, but there will always be people willing to pay these sort of prices. Hence football is still expensive. People will always pay the asking price.

If they are prepared to charge away fans £25, Why can't they do the same for home fans?

carsey added 15:46 - Aug 30
I disagree entirely with those saying Town should not increase the prices for Leeds fans and those of other clubs not joining in the scheme to charge a maximum £25. For Leeds especially I would be looking at £40 and no consessions in the hope it refers a few from coming to Portman Road since they are nothing but trouble before, during and after the match.
For the rest hopefully their own supporters will bring pressure to bare and prices will eventually reduce to a sensible level. Few Championship clubs come close to filling their stadium so the argument about atmosphere doesn't hold water for me.

....absolutely agree with all comments regarding pricing the same as the visiting club charges us .....but another thought .
If the club are keen that away tickets are only £25 ...and would therefore accept that in return ....a real measure of the clubs intent to continue to put fans at the front of what they do would be a refund scheme...ironically paid for by the visiting teams away fans.
Budget for a £25 ticket price.....charge £37 .....keep the £12 back for each ticket sold and then subsidise our away fans ticket price bubble that amount ....in doing this our club only ever gets what it had planned and budgeted ....and our fans only pay what our club wanted them to in the first place ....a win win that would only then see the away fans of the other club paying over the odds.......hopefully then that would bring pressure from those set standards of fans to get their club to join in what is a perfectly reasonable suggestion

Perhaps TWTDGav TWTDPhil again you can seek to use this board to influence ??

Nothing will change until football supporters across the board grow a backbone and start boycotting games.

Carsey - a couple of points:

Are ALL Leeds fans trouble? No, they're not. Why punish the majority, who are decent enough?
Have you ever thought about WHY the majority of Championship clubs don't fill their ground. I appreciate that it's not all down to price, but it has to be a strong factor. There's been enough comments about price on this forum in recent times - most of it is justified in my opinion.

I was at the Leeds game 10 years or so back, where a tiny minority of their supporters invaded the pitch and threw missiles into the Town supporters after our equaliser relegated them, but it was precisely that, a tiny minority of the 30 odd thousand in the ground. I was pretty disgusted, but there's no point blaming them all. Weed out the numpties, serve a lifetime banning order and let the rest enjoy the game. I remember a bloke about my age apologising to me when I got back to my car. He was appalled.

30 odd years ago the Thatcher Government wanted to bring in compulsory ID as they viewed all supporters as violent thugs just itching for a scrap. It wasn't true then and it isn't now. What progress have we made if we want to routinely rip off an entire clubs supporters just because we don't like them?
Certain clubs do have a reputation - agreed. Scratch the surface and you'll find that most are decent working people enjoying a passionate hobby.

Boycott this one as this is just a rip off !

Strange though that Leeds are offering an UNDER 60 ticket as well as QPR and Millwall also did, but Towns argument was all the other clubs were selling Under 65 tickets. !!!

NBVJohn I take your point about the minority of Leeds fans being the problem but my view is they have a larger minority of problem fans than any other club and frankly I would not miss having them come to Portman Road. If they want to come charge them silly money at least then then cost of repairs to the stadium will be better covered from the income.
Sorry to be so negative towards Leeds but they are the one throw back to the dark days of the 70s which I remember too well having supported and been involved in policing matches and until they as a group understand I would happily try to price them out

we are 'RIP off britain' for a reason and could learn how to treat fans by looking at the full stadiums every week in the german bundesliga where fans can get to see top clubs for as little as 10 eur .on the 60-65 fiasco my friends dad used to have 3 friends next to him all in that age group they all walked away fans of +40 years lost.itfc just used any excuse to price hike and are now found out by clubs having a over 60 ticket still.shame on ME and his board of greedy directors
