Burley Applies for Town Job
Friday, 4th May 2018 12:05

Former Town boss George Burley has revealed he has applied for his old job at Portman Road and would have fellow Blues legend Terry Butcher working alongside him were he to be appointed.

Burley, 61, enjoyed a successful spell in charge of the Blues between 1994 and 2002 during which time he took Town into the Premier League via the play-offs and to fifth in the top flight and consequently back into the UEFA Cup.

“Everyone has kept asking me about it and, after much consideration, I’ve applied,” Burley told the EADT.

“And I’d have Terry Butcher working with me too. Just like me he’s got the club in his blood, lives in Suffolk, and is desperate to see better times.

“People might say I have been out of the game for a while, but I have lived in Ipswich for the last four years and been at virtually every home game so I understand the current mood and what is required going forwards.”

Burley, who had previously said he’d like to work at Portman Road again but not as manager, was last in a management job at Cypriot club Apollon Limassol for a short spell in 2012.

Despite his illustrious history with the Blues both as a player and manager, the former Scotland boss would appear an outsider for the current vacancy.

ok so george burley lives locally has ipswich in his blood, turns down all media requests apparently and is the only guy suitable that town can afford to bring back the good times as his philosophy is what the fans are crying out for,he would do it on a shoestring, will develop young players and will uncover a few cheap gems along the way,he must be looking at the academy and thinking yep ive got a nucleus to work with there...BYE BYE anyone who cant trap a ball and pass it, thats a few of our players gone straight away, if you are not good in possession with burley you dont play..simple as that

Never go back, would he have Finidi George on his coaching staff, are we still paying him? It has to be younger men like Cook or Hurst not someone who been out of the game for a long time

So Burley is the manager for today ???? I wonder who will be Manager of the day tomorrow ??
Roll on the end of May for that reason only.

Would be fine with this as whovever we appoint will contain a degree of risk.
With Burley and Butcher I firmly believe the supporters will show tremendous support from when the first ball is kicked.

Already had enough of the speculation!.... install your next 'choice' Evans and let the 'fall out' commence!

Imagine Butcher on derby day! George Burley is a chapter in our history worth re-reading. Exciting passing football, faith in youth, loves club, can work on a shoe string. Ticks all the boxes. Doesn't matter if he hasn't managed in a while at all.

at the end of the day nobody is going to be able to guarantee success, its just that some are a bigger risk than others, whoever is appointed ,it wont please everyone, we just have to hope it works out well and we will have to bite the bullet and do our bit to get the new era off to good start .

B&B! I like the sound of this combo, more than anyone else linked so far... just what the club needs right now to rebuild faith, pride, identity etc. How passionate would we all feel once again? Out of all the possibles, I like Hurst as he is on the up having shown his ability promoting Grimsby and doing what he's done this season with Shrewsbury, but he is as much of a risk as bringing back Burley. We all need a feel-good after the last 2 years so I'm in the bring back Burley camp.

I have been debating for some time weather Burley would be a good choice and with Butch it sounds like the dream team on true blood and guts. How about Burley and Butch in charge but with the remit of bring through Dyer and Chambers as trainee replacements. The good old Liverpool boot room model. And may be just maybe Town could show that football isn't about(Sky) money but heart again. And who wouldn't love once more to Shout George Burleys blue army at wembley

@dirtydingusmagee

(Very sorry about the multiple paragraphs, again! lol But please, foremost for the sake of YOU learning about 2 mind-boggling SIMPLE"remedies" to your sad & surreal @MZT sufferings, do try fighting your way to the very end of my post this time. Thank you in advance :-D )

While I've no grounds on which to doubt the sincerity of your "polite" anti-sentiments about me & my TWTD contributions -- you are after all a 'repeat offender' in that [joyful] regard I believe dear @dirtydingus lol -- I *as usual*, just to use your own ploy wording above, completely fail to see the INHERENT NEED for any remote such utterly derisive, repeat utterly derisive, response to my (or any other TWTD member's for that matter) prose and/or *elaborated* pov and/or persona!

This time not only the cute part about you feeling ehhh strangely compelled to inform the rest of TWTD that you personally get quote "numbed into a state of trance" by the mere first paragraph of my granted often quite lengthy & detailed contributions, but additionally the lurid & very tasteless part about quote "my local"... only has ONE real purpose in my book (and for what it's worth particularly to such a hmmmm: Highly competent & morally encompassed self-appointed "Assessor" as you, that book too of my top professional 'head-shrinker' -- but in your probable view then also presumed uber submissive & especially "PROSE-INDULGENT" :-) -- of a wife as well btw, who earlier peaked at my turned on mini-laptop and thus at this article's post) and that is to score some so called 'Brownie Points' on yours truly behalf! ...by eagerly jumping or re-jumping on the "Let's 'Politely Insult', Personally Attack' or else just Vilely Ridicule @MZT" bandwagon.

As I've pointed out in prior instances of these delightful 'Case Studies' of @MZT directed INSULTS (and make no mistake about it the rest of TWTD: That while not always outright vilely worded or intended they are nevertheless indeed INSULTS in some poorly disguised form or another, not mere "polite" disagreements! With the latter of course being absolutely normal and acceptable 'back & forth' for a chat-board) innumerous times before:

1) Alas if my inputs here in general is vehemently not to your liking and/or "literary capacity" etc. etc.... well then bloody don't even attempt to read them!!!
(And hence therefore ABSTAIN yourself from commenting on, or slaughtering rather, said inputs just for the sole purpose of "politely" insulting me just for the [joyful] sake of it".)

Aye and that even includes reading just that very first paragraph, as you & a few well-known other apparent "masochists" :-) here seem LUDICROUSLY incapable of, this despite your either very longtime or just very apparent multitude of reservations or preconceptions about my prose, "painful" habit of being long-winded and detailed (if my initial article input is indeed lengthy, which occasionally they are with the simple idea on my often TWTD *time-constrained* part = of then not likely having to explain or elaborate my sometimes controversial views on ITFC or like in this instance *pure* 'Self Defense' in an ongoing CUMBERSOME series of subsequent posts a la like most others prefer & have the time to do it here) as well as often *well-founded skepticism*, unstifled sarcasm or unorthodox persona???!!!

2) And if not glancing at and reading ANY part of said @MZT inputs is ehhhh too difficult for you to master, well then bloddy do the extreme SIMPLE thing of going into your TWTD settings and block all my contributions from view on your end! Period!

(PS: However do be advised that carrying out that little TWTD settings procedure will of course also DISABLE anyone's doing so awesome "fun" of succumbing to in future to personally attack, ridicule or otherwise "politely insult" me & my inputs from time to time... so since it's blatantly obvious that a selected smallish group of rather pitiful, often humorless & etiquette bereft ITFC "Simpletons" seems to enjoy doing exactly THAT so so much... hmmmm I say better leave 'em personal TWTD settings as they are, wouldn't you agree??? ;-) ;-) :-D )

Could do worse. Surely it's a risk with whoever is appointed?

Maybe this is what our club needs, two icons bringing together a fragmented fan base and reinstating the club's 'roots' ! I'm certainly not adverse to the idea!

Have said previously that I wouldn't mind seeing George as Director of Football,as he had appeared to rule himself out of Manager.Especially as the existing incumbent will depart once Mick gets another job
Not dead against this combo as I am with Pardew,McClaren etc,and we don't know how/if any of the favourites would get on,thats if they wanted to come.Thought Tony Mowbray had already ruled himself along with the Cowley Brothers.

If George were to manage again would have preferred his former captain Matt Holland as his assistant,or preferably Frank Lampard with George upstairs( not uncle Harry)

Makes the close season interesting !
his assistant

Been thinking about this one a lot. Indisputable Town Legends both. But I truly believe that no matter how good the past you should always believe the future will be better. Hope and optimism for me means Hurst, Cook, Shefki....etc.

Should be fun tomorrow in the sun!

Why not give GB another chance. Yes he made some mistakes but he made a lot more right choices and provided entertaining, competitive football. Some seem to think its all nostalgic blah, blah, must have a young manager why? He knows the club inside out and after MM we need a guy who will reconnect with fans and play good football on a limited budget. Hurst has never managed at top level and that is where we aspire to be. I'm not saying GB should be given the job but he would be a good appointment.
