Burley Applies for Town Job
Friday, 4th May 2018 12:05

Former Town boss George Burley has revealed he has applied for his old job at Portman Road and would have fellow Blues legend Terry Butcher working alongside him were he to be appointed.

Burley, 61, enjoyed a successful spell in charge of the Blues between 1994 and 2002 during which time he took Town into the Premier League via the play-offs and to fifth in the top flight and consequently back into the UEFA Cup.

“Everyone has kept asking me about it and, after much consideration, I’ve applied,” Burley told the EADT.

“And I’d have Terry Butcher working with me too. Just like me he’s got the club in his blood, lives in Suffolk, and is desperate to see better times.

“People might say I have been out of the game for a while, but I have lived in Ipswich for the last four years and been at virtually every home game so I understand the current mood and what is required going forwards.”

Burley, who had previously said he’d like to work at Portman Road again but not as manager, was last in a management job at Cypriot club Apollon Limassol for a short spell in 2012.

Despite his illustrious history with the Blues both as a player and manager, the former Scotland boss would appear an outsider for the current vacancy.

Only surprise here is that if George knows the mood then why does he have Terry as a number 2 and not Matt Holland, Shefqi, Kieran Dyer or someone else that is younger alongside him, thereby creating a succession plan. Love both the guys and believe there should be a place for them both at ITFC but put together it does come across a little as jobs-for-the-boys.

Whilst some are rightly taking the emmotion out of their judgement on this one,it doesnt look like anyone is hugely revolted by the idea, so this could be a good solution. We as fans will have to give anyone time though.

Personally I would be over the moon to see these too back and know that loads of that is nostalgia, but isnt a Kuqi appointment to some degree?

At worse the fact that George has applied raises the bar on the selection process as could you really appoint a big name untested (Lampard) or someone who has recently failed (Coleman) ahead of someone with so much proven experience?

Anyway back to my emotions, cant wait to tell the kids!!!!

There is nobody i'd love to see more back in the PR hotseat than George..he'd get my time & backing 100%..for the record the day he got sacked was my saddest as a town fan of 30+ years.

I just don't want to see “fans” get on his back if things go a bit wrong - he doesn't deserve that.

Would be amazing to see Burley & Butcher in our dugout with maybe a younger ex town player learning the ropes alongside them.

Not for me, if he'd been given the caretaker job and impressed then, then give him the job.
But he wasn't and hasn't had that opportunity to show he can still do it, so I'd say no but still think GB should be involved in the club somehow....

He worked with very tight finances last time and look what he achieved. From a 9-0 drubbing to Promotion and European football. The transfer market collapse did him no favours. His style of football is what we are crying our for and I'd be happy to see him back. Maybe George and Shefqi as his assistant to eventually take over. Both blue to the core. Not sure we will get Hurst as we haven't even approached him yet and other clubs will have a eye on him too.

Sacked by a panicking Sheepy way too soon. I'd be happy to see him back and it's the only way I'd have butch involved

Burley & Butcher 15 years ago yes but not in 2018.
I ask the question as to why George hasn't been involved in football for the past 5 years
Being over 60 doesn't exclude him, just look at warnock

Who knows, maybe this could work? He would need a young coach to help him with tactics.

Having him as director of football with a young, hungry manager strikes me as an excellent, more progressive solution.

I think he would give 100% to this club and bring on the younger players and teach the team to pass the ball. We need to go back to basics so not a bad choice in my opinion.

This would be a backwards step. George did a very good job for us and is certainly an Ipswich man, but we should be looking forwards and I'm not sure George - who has been out of the game for a while - is the answer. Plenty of better options in my opinion. Wouldn't be the worst option though and better than journeymen sure as Pardew and McClaren.

Remember whoever comes in will need to start from scratch, getting to know the club, the fans, the players so will need time to get the ground running, whereas George is already 70-80% there. Fans love him, knows the club inside out and already seen the squad good or bad and will already have ideas on what wrong, whats missing same as Terry. Lack of recent management is just a thing where once he rolls his sleeves up he'll be away again. Some of these managers who are favorites will struggle they will need to do a lot of work to get things running and we could end up in the bottom 3 as a result. George knows where Mick got it wrong and so does Terry just a matter of sorting that out. Recruitment of players will be a case of getting in good scouts and connections which will roll in. Good luck George and Terry you never know

Personally I'd take it. I'd prefer a young up and comer but if it is an experienced option then that duo would be ideal.

some on here have short memories!

Grimsby 3-0 Town 9th Oct 2002 01:35
A woeful and inept Town crashed to a humiliating 3-0 defeat at lowly Grimsby. The Blues were two down within fifteen minutes and never recovered, conceding a third in the second half. 2

Absolutely. Failing that some involvement perhaps as Director of football if a less experienced manager gets the role but would be fantastic to see GB back in the dug out if he can recreate some of the football from his past spell.

I think a Burley & Butcher combo would definitely bring "something" special to this stagnant-looking club -- and especially the clubhouse and everything that goes on in there -- that none of the other managerial candidates probably can.
That "something" is obviously the for decades talked about old and very **nostalgic** genuine 'Ipswich Way' of things & thinking... But while the revisitation of that glorious SOUNDING concept would initially surely transfer onto the stands and thereby increase both ticket sales & crowd atmosphere considerably, hmmm would it, EVERYTHING CONSIDERED ANNO 2018+ (and by everything that includes a utterly football clueless & nowadays inexplicably tight current ownership), also eventually transfer onto the actual on-the-field action too and like in those local folklore'ish 'Days Gone By' become really positive not to mention truly successful???

As much as I respect these 2 true Ipswich legends, I have my serious doubts... and in the case of Mr. Burley The Manager there is just no way around the insignificant fact that this is now a staggering *18 long years* since that unforgettable & very successful 2000-01 PL campaign & him winning the Manager of the Year award.... and SADLY worth mentioning by the same token: Just a mere single year short (*17 long years*) since his rather forgettable & very unsuccessful SUDDEN managerial déroute here!!!

Alas like other posters have allured to in some fashion or another today, my closing thoughts also kind of drifts onto that eons old Greek 'El Duderino' & pre-Socratic philosopher named Heraclitus famously shrewd words & analog:

But obviously I do believe we could do "A LOT Worse" folks than with Burley & Butcher combo ... and furthermore "A LOT Worse' than what I with quite some basis still fear we MIGHT, repeat MIGHT, eventually end up with otherwise! in this the increasingly narrowing but except for Hurst, Cook and similar types then uhuu! scaringly still stuffed with plenty of 'Lesser Dinosaurs', 'Has Beens', 'Completely Greens' or just 'Incompetents' managerial field (even another former employee Roy Keane is now listed as 25/1 at BetVictor??? HiHiHiHi :-D :-D http://www.thesackrace.com/teams/ipswich-town )... this since I UNLIKE many fans here fundamentally remains *Cautiously Skeptic* (as opposed to suddenly post Marcus' pre-arranged interview: *Merrily Super Optimistic*) in Mr. Evans ITFC heart and not least abilities... particularly his abilities when it comes to appoint the so called RIGHT football guy!

Hi

I live in the north and get to the occasional away game but always follow Town's results and news. Yes I remember 1978 I was still at school but left the following year. There was no chance of getting a ticket for Wembley. However seeing the team, Sir Bobby and the cup at the Corn Exchange along with the superb games that followed gave me memories that will last a life time. I will reminisce on Sunday and cross my fingers that the next appointment can somehow set the club on a return to the top flight. It sounds as if the owners is taking a lot of advice. The pieces I offer are a, Who ever the next manager is will need time to have an impact (should not be a problem as this has always been the ITFC way) & b please please please back the successful applicant with a reasonable fund for transfers & wages. The nucleus of the team is there with promising youth coming through. Invest in the new manager and rewards on the field and in the profit & loss account will surely come.
