Burley Applies for Town Job
Friday, 4th May 2018 12:05

Former Town boss George Burley has revealed he has applied for his old job at Portman Road and would have fellow Blues legend Terry Butcher working alongside him were he to be appointed.

Burley, 61, enjoyed a successful spell in charge of the Blues between 1994 and 2002 during which time he took Town into the Premier League via the play-offs and to fifth in the top flight and consequently back into the UEFA Cup.

“Everyone has kept asking me about it and, after much consideration, I’ve applied,” Burley told the EADT.

“And I’d have Terry Butcher working with me too. Just like me he’s got the club in his blood, lives in Suffolk, and is desperate to see better times.

“People might say I have been out of the game for a while, but I have lived in Ipswich for the last four years and been at virtually every home game so I understand the current mood and what is required going forwards.”

Burley, who had previously said he’d like to work at Portman Road again but not as manager, was last in a management job at Cypriot club Apollon Limassol for a short spell in 2012.

Despite his illustrious history with the Blues both as a player and manager, the former Scotland boss would appear an outsider for the current vacancy.

The job would not be a stepping stone for these two, 100% committed, 100% Blue!

Lost his way (and maybe got carried away) after the first successful season in the PL, but on the other hand I think he did wonders for us. Not sure about him returning though, but as another poster said, we could do a lot worse. Still a few names ahead of him in the pecking order in my view.

I too was at Lowestoft and that "interview" in the EADT appears to be a transcipt of the night !
Would have GB back in a flash and assisting could suit TB down to the ground.... they'd never dare leave anything out there on the pitch if "caged tiger" was waiting to greet them in the dressing room.
I'm in Marcus!

I get the nostalgic appeal. But those who say "ipswich in the blood" and "proper Ipswich man" are getting carried away. I'm a proper Ipswich man and have Ipswich in my blood , but those are not credentials that make you a good managerial prospect are they?

Heart says yes, but head says no is the perfect summation.

Now is the time for young blood - I'll take passion, ambition and desire over experience any day of the week and twice on a Sunday! We've nothing to lose!

Been out of the game to long, we need a young manager of the modern world.
Look what happened to Butcher at Newport just 2 years ago, nothing short of embarrassment.
Nostalgia yes, but what else is different?
A sad no from me!

Yes please! Its rubbish to say George is out of touch with the modern game. He takes a very keen interest. Remember what John Lyall did for us

It would be brilliant to see him appointed on the day of the 40th anniversary of his FA Cup triumph!

As much as I love George, for me this would be the wrong move.We need to move forward and employ a young manager who is already in the game.
I would rather remember George for the good times we had.I would hate it to go sour should he be appointed.
I wouldn't mind him involved in the background though in one way or another as you never loose your knowledge of the game.

Both men are Ipswich through and through and have worked together before but the one thing George won't have this time, if he gets the job, is the driving force he had before and that is the Late Dale Roberts Personally whilst liking both men and I have a lot of time for them, I do think we need a younger man at the helm.

no thanks, too much baggage from his previous stint and his role in taking us into administration.
add in the ending on at limassol and the fact that he hasn't worked since, it's far too much of a risk.
let's keep the memories of the promotion season and the great 1st prem season, but realise that was seventeen years ago, and football has moved on!
my first choice is mogga, who has the history AND the current managerial experience and success, but i would be happy with hurst or cook

George Burleys a cracking manager. Ipswich as a club made some bad decisions in that second season in the premiership. Building new stands.. buying new players on inflated wages that created friction with the existing squad.. the Marcus Stewart black eye scandle..
Burleys brand of football was exciting to watch.. and always competitive.
He should have replaced Mcarthy from Christmas till the end of the season to see how he got on.

This makes is so so interesting... They have the credentials and the passion.

If I was chairman, without any hesitation I would appoint Burley and Butcher.

Knows how to play football 'triangles' on the deck. Gets youth through. Loves the Town. Get him in!

Maybe as I mentioned earlier as maybe a director of Football at the club...if he did get the job which I don't think he will he would at least bring ground football back to Portman Road.

Just remember guys how many past managers of a club that have returned and it hasn't ended in tears? Also remember when he was our manager we were heading towards Div 2 rapidly

I did say a couple of weeks ago why not Burley, I#d feel happier with him than someone who doesn't understand the club or its fans. Micks biggest issues was he thought he was bigger than the fans Burley would never get in the position Mick ended up in. He was also picked as the Scotland manager which didn't go well as players were just not available to him. Town owed him a lot of money when they went into liquidation and it seems he has put this behind him which is good of him. I'd like this myself as his a great guy and would bring the youth in something he did before at Ipswich and something the fans have been asking for. Level headed guy, great with the fans, loves the club and talks sense and obviously wants the job so come on Marcus what you waiting for?
