Klug: Only 15 Fit Players Ahead of Boro Clash
Friday, 4th May 2018 14:56

Blues caretaker-boss Bryan Klug has only 15 fit players going into Sunday’s final game of the season at home to Middlesbrough.

There is some good news for Town with midfielder Cole Skuse back after illness and Luke Hyam from a hamstring injury, however, defender Cameron Carter-Vickers remains a big doubt having rolled his ankle in training eight days ago.

“Skusey’s trained, we haven’t seen Cam yet, he’s a worry,” Klug said. “We’ll maybe see how he is tomorrow, but I’m not hopeful. Luke Hyam has trained this week, so he’s in contention.

Regarding Hyam’s contract situation - there is as yet no news on whether the Blues will take up the one-year option on the midfielder’s deal which is up this summer - Klug said it’s not him who will make the decision.

“That’s being dealt with the pay grade above me,” he added. “I’m guessing the owner is dealing with that.”

Winger Mustapha Carayol was forced off just before half-time at Reading and won’t be involved against the Teessiders, one of his former clubs.

“I’m not sure how long he will be out for, he won’t be taking part on Sunday,” Klug said.

“I thought for 40 minutes last week he showed what he can do. He’s got a lot of talent but he’s obviously got something to sort out for next season.

“Sadly there are a couple more situations, Jordan Spence has got a sore knee, Ben Folami has pulled up in training today as well.

“I’ve just been counting on the board, I got to 15 so fingers crossed maybe one or two of those will be available.”

Another of those sidelined is young defender Chris Smith, who Klug says would have been involved had he been fit.

“His back is still sore, which is a real shame because he’s done enough to have his chance and he would have had his chance,” he said.

“But obviously we were delighted with Woolfy [Luke Woolfenden] last week and he’s trained well again this week. It’s a shame for Chris.”

In addition to the injuries, Grant Ward will serve the second game of his three-match ban for his red card against Aston Villa.

Klug says Irish youngster Barry Cotter is in his thoughts for a second start having come on as a late sub at Reading last week.

“He’s in contention, Barry,” he confirmed. “He’s trained quite well so we’re definitely thinking about using him.”

Asked whether the lack of fit players opens the door for a few more youngsters to be involved against Boro, Klug responded: “I’ll open the door and have a look and see if I can see any more!

"As we stand at the moment, we’ve got to find two more players and there’s only one place you can go and look for them.”

Among the youngsters who could potentially be called into the squad who haven’t been in the 18s for recent games are striker Aaron Drinan, defender Pat Webber and midfielders James Blanchfield and Conor McKendry.

Klug says he’s not going to give keeper Michael Crowe his senior debut on Sunday, the recent Wales call-up still yet to make his first-team bow for the Blues.

“I think Bart is desperate to get into the Poland squad so he wants to carry on playing and that’s fine by me,” he said.
