Knudsen to Make World Cup Debut as Denmark Face Croatia
Sunday, 1st Jul 2018 17:59

Blues defender Jonas Knudsen will become the 10th Town player to appear at a World Cup finals when he starts for Denmark in this evening’s round-of-16 tie against Croatia in Nizhny Novgorod (ITV from 6.30, KO 7pm).

The 25-year-old, who will be winning his fourth full cap, was an unused sub in all the Danes’ group games but has been named at left wing-back for this evening’s match against the Croats.

Nine Blues players have previously won caps at a World Cup finals. John Wark and Alan Brazil represented Scotland in 1982 when Mick Mills was England’s captain with Paul Mariner and Terry Butcher were also in Ron Greenwood’s side.

Bontcho Guentchev featured for Bulgaria in 1994, Matt Holland was in Mick McCarthy’s Republic of Ireland team in 2002, Slovenian defender Amir Karic was still a Town player at the same tournament and most recently Tommy Smith played for New Zealand in 2010.

Can't understand why the qualified and knowledgeable coaches of Denmark can't agree with the few fans of Ipswich that think Knudsen is rubbish.

Of course these fans couldn't be wrong...... could they?

Grattis, Jonas! An honour for you and for ITFC to have a player at the World Cup.

That's really taken me by surprise. Didn't think he'd get the nod for the first time at the knockout phase! Good luck, Jonas!

Probably our most improved player last year. Good luck Jonas you deserve it. I wasn't going to watch after the Russia/Spain epic but I will now.

good luck jonas, hoping he won't be at wing-back though, always prefer him as a full-back or left of a 3...

andygizmo - I will openly right now say, I might have underestimated or unappreciated Knudsen. Maybe the managers philosophy before did not suit him, constantly been told to put the ball in behind.

Will 100% have a different outlook on Knudsen, and will watch closely tonight, hopefully thrives on the ball under Hurst. Will say always thought he was a good defender, just on the ball looked shaky. Maybe his defensive expertise got him the nod in this game.

Brilliant for Jonas and the Town. But if he has a good game will ME look to cash in on him too?

Amazing I can't tell you the amount of time we have said his long throws never produce.

Fantastic to see him get selected. Great early assist with the throw but then a dodgy backwards clearance led to the Croats goal. That being said so proud to see him players and how get to hear Ipswich being mentioned l!!

Bit harsh being over critical of his touch on their goal. Should be proud we are represented on the pitch in this competition. Makes a mockery of those supporters saying how rubbish he is. He can't be that bad if, before tonight, he is playing for a team that hasn't lost for nearly 2 years

Great news this. The big question though, is whether he will be with us next season ..,

Great news for ME - should add a few million to his sale which will inevitably come after the World Cup
