Town Confirm Edwards Signing
Tuesday, 17th Jul 2018 10:05

Town have confirmed the signing of winger Gwion Edwards from Peterborough United on a two-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

News that the Blues had had a £700,000 offer accepted for the 25-year-old broke on Friday with discussions regarding personal terms continuing over the weekend and yesterday when he also underwent a medical.

Edwards is manager Paul Hurst’s third Town signing and the first he has paid money for following the recruitment of loanee Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea and Jordan Roberts, who joined on a free transfer after leaving Crawley.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here, I can’t wait to get started now," Edwards told iFollow Ipswich. "I’ve just signed on the dotted line now. I’m really excited.

“I really enjoyed my time with Peterborough and I wish the club well but now I’m looking forward to kicking on here.

What will he offer the Town side? “Pace really, I like to run with the ball and just try and create some chances, set some goals up and get some goals myself.”

He says he had good reports regarding new Blues boss Hurst when he asked around after the move had been mooted.

“I’ve spoken to a few people who were at Shrewsbury with him and other lads who know him and all I’ve heard is good things," he added. “The boys I’ve spoken to today, they've said good things, they’re enjoying it.

“No doubt he will have some fresh ideas and I think everyone at the club is excited to see what’s to come.

"I’ve been looking to make the step up to Championship football and thankfully Paul believes in me and has given me this opportunity to come and play for Ipswich.

“Hopefully I can prove to everyone that I’m good enough to be here and do well. This is definitely a team that I’m excited to be a part of and I’m looking forward to the start of the season."

The Welshman had spells with Aberysthwyth Town and Cardiff City as a schoolboy before joining Swansea’s youth set-up as an U15.

Having signed professional terms with the Swans, the Lampeter-born wideman was sent out on loan to St Johnstone in Scotland in January 2013 where he made his first senior appearances in a spell which ran to the end of the season.

He rejoined the Saints for the whole of the following campaign and over the course of his two spells made a total of four starts and 20 sub appearances for the Perth-based club, scoring once.

In March 2014 he moved to then-League One Crawley on loan, scoring on his debut as a sub in a 2-0 victory over Tranmere, and the following summer he moved to the Red Devils on a permanent basis having been unable to break into the first team at Swansea.

After making 71 starts and 12 sub appearances for Crawley, scoring 15 times, Wales U19 and U21 cap Edwards joined Peterborough in June 2016 for an undisclosed six-figure fee. He went on to make 62 starts and 12 sub appearances for Posh, netting 16 goals.

Edwards will make his first appearance in a Town shirt tonight when the Blues face his old club Crawley - who will receive a six-figure sell-on windfall from the deal - at East Grinstead's East Court (KO 7.30pm).

Tractor boy Tommy your comment makes people on here so happy with your negativity could it be the posh fans aren't happy with him being sold and why was other championship clubs after him

TractorBoyTommy added 12:10 - Jul 17
@baxter7 you really think he would choose to come to Ipswich over Nottingham Forest and Bristol City who were apparently the over championship clubs after him. Tough decision choosing a promotion push with those teams or a relegation battle with Ipswich?? no other championship teams were after him, i heard a few other league one teams were as thats his standard of football

TractorBoyTommy could it be because Forest or City are less able to guarantee him first choice football given they have much bigger squads than us? It's not always just about the money or the promotion chances. Realistically as much as we would love to be signing proven Championship level players our budget won't easily stretch to that, so we have to rely on taking chances on lower league signings.

@Charlie_pl_baxter if Bristol City and Forest are unable to guarantee him first choice football, then the point im making is that surely he is not good enough for the level of the championship. I believe David Cotterill is a free agent, he is proven in the championship and a Welsh international. surely this would be the safer/cheaper option. and could of re invested in other areas of the squad

TractorBoyTommy, I suggest you look at the PUFC message board and they are sick that he is leaving.

I also have a great friend who is a season ticket holder and he just like the message boards tell you think he has been stolen at that price, they were expecting lot more.

Forest and Bristol City have been linked with everyone as they are the 2 clubs in the championship who are doing business and stumping up serious money.

What is that weird squiggle next to his name on the shirt? Did somebody spill some tippex?

Maybe it's because this guy if successful will have a price to sell on,to build a better squad it took George 4-5 years to build his

Some supporters are still not happy.Just get behind the manager and his signings.REMEMBER we don't have vast amounts of money like some clubs and we don't break rules like others. The manager is getting in players he likes and feels will do a good job.
Let's wait until the end of the year and then we can judge which way the club is going.Remember,Patience is a virtue.Get behind the manager and stop moaning.Players read these comments and it does not help when they read unjustified remarks from so called supporters.

@martin587 I guarantee no Ipswich player will read this post or the comments. They have far more important things to be spending their thousands of pounds on which they have worked so hard for, like spray tans, teeth whitening, getting that new tattoo or even anal bleaching!

@Tommy: Credit where it's due. I thought you'd have upped sticks by now, but it's working for you so I suppose the incentive remains. Too many posts on the one story will be your undoing though.

Matt Holland came from a lowly Bournemouth.

Jon Walters came from lowly Chester.

Jamie Clapham was a Spurs cast off.

Mark Venus was surplus to requirements when he joined town.

John McGreal came. From Tranmere.

Mogga was considered past his best when he joined Ipswich.

Jermaine Wright came from lowly Crewe.

David Johnson came from lowly Bury

Jim Magilton was struggling to hold down a place in the premiership

The examples can go on but you will notice I have for a point chosen the Burley years, we have and can continue to be successful with the right manager in place taking players from the lower leagues, developing our own talent and picking up the odd player from the premiership or elsewhere. To be honest I hadn't heard much about any of the players above but we trusted George Burley.

@bluemin nora

The squiggle at the start of his name is part of the Mind logo and will be on all EFL clubs' shirt names this season as part of them being EFL's official charity partner.

I was all set to comment that it was nice to see nothing but positive posts for a change, then I got to TractorBoyTommy. Meant to mark it down by the way, not up. I swear there are some people who would complain even if we brought in Pickford and Ronaldo and won every cup on the planet. This is good news, let's enjoy it for at least a few minutes. Give the damn guy a chance.
