Barnet 0-1 Ipswich Town - Match Report
Saturday, 21st Jul 2018 17:06 by Robert Dunford

A second-half goal from Myles Kenlock was enough for Ipswich Town to record a 1-0 win over National League Barnet at the Hive.

Paul Hurst kept faith with seven of the 11 players who started earlier in the week at Crawley Town, with Josh Emmanuel, Flynn Downes and Jordan Roberts also starting.

Following his exploits in Russia for Poland at the World Cup, and having signed a three-year deal to keep him at Portman Road, Bartosz Bialkowski made his first start for Town in pre-season.

The last time Barnet met Ipswich was in another pre-season friendly in 2016, with Town ending up on the wrong end of a penalty by the now-departed John Akinde.

Barnet made a change after just four minutes, when Craig Robson left the field in discomfort, to be replaced by Dan Sweeney.

The enforced early change did not have much effect on the way Town started, with Emmanuel looking to get crosses in from the right hand side.

Freddie Sears was the central striker, with Cole Skuse and Downes behind Roberts, Martyn Waghorn and the goalscorer on Tuesday, Grant Ward.

The first incident fell to the hosts, after Luke Chambers gifted the ball to a Barnet trialist but, to the relief of Town, his aim past Bialkowski went wide of the left-hand upright.

Given the sweltering conditions at the Hive, it might not have been a surprise that the next came about because of poor distribution, but it was Ipswich who benefited on 17 minutes.

Roberts picked up a loose pass from Barnet, but was unable to direct his shot from the edge of the box past goalkeeper Mark Cousins.

Chances continued to be few and far between, with the north London outfit looking slightly more energetic than their Championship opponents.

After counting himself unlucky not to find the scoresheet against Crawley, Waghorn came close again four minutes before the break, with a freekick from close to 25 yards out whistling narrowly wide.

Paul Hurst made three substitutions at the break, with Gwion Edwards, Tristan Nydam and Andre Dozzell replacing Downes, Ward and Sears, although Barnet still continued to press and find space.

The first chance of the second half for Town fell to Waghorn just before the hour mark. His freekick from near the left hand corner flag was crossed into the box with pace, and appeared to head directly for the top right hand corner, but Cousins was able to palm away his effort for a corner.

Having been a spectator for the most part, Biakowski was replaced on the hour mark by Dean Gerken.

The deadlock was finally broken on 68 minutes with a fine move involving Edwards, who was able to feed through Kenlock who was powering through into the box. He drove his effort low past the left of Cousins to give Town the lead in a game they had laboured in.

Taking the lead appeared to give the visitors a lift, looking more energetic and sharper in their all-round play.

A final set of substitutions were made on 72 minutes, with Jordan Spence, Ben Folami, Corrie Ndaba and Bailey Clements - the latter duo making their first appearances in the senior side - taking over from for Roberts, Luke Chambers, Emmanuel and Kenlock.

After Nbada recovered well to prevent Dave Tarpey from getting in on goal late on, Ipswich were able to leave north London with their second victory in a week.

Barnet: Cousins (Trialist 84), Alexander, Reynolds, Robson (Sweeney 5), Adams, Sparkes (Kyei 77), J Taylor (Coulthirst 60), Fonguck (Boucaud 74), Trialist (Mason-Clark 64), Trialist (Tarpey 60), Payne. Unused: Johnson.

Town: Bialkowski (Gerken 60), Emmanuel (Ndaba), Kenlock (Clements 72), Chambers (Folami 72), Woolfenden, Downes (Edwards 46), Skuse, Waghorn, Roberts (Spence 72), Ward (Nydam 46), Sears (Dozzell 46). Att: 922.

I know it's pre season and I personally don't mind W/L/D, it's all about fitness, but the lack of goals is slightly worrying. Looking forward to the new season though and I have alot of faith in PH and co!

We're playing a different style far more procession based & trying to get the ball forward quicker: players don't get use to this overnight it needs time but from what I've seen & what Hurst says it's much more encouraging, yes we would like to be winning by more, strikers scoring but we have to be realistic Hurst is still learning about his players & id have thought as a fairly good idea who he wants & who he needs to move on: he knows we are short in defence & creativity in the final third as I keep saying I'll judge are transfer business 10th August! We will have more players, it's just a waiting game unless yr Nottingham forest!

Has Kenlock beefed himself up a bit over the summer? Looks like it in that picture.

Interesting to see how the new team will set out but my major concern is numbers. We have 19 days until the window shuts and we need two centre backs, a defensive midfielder and a striker. That's the minimum otherwise we could struggle.

Come on town let's get some bodies in the building!

Edwards looks a quality player if he can stay fit, concerning however that Waghorn looked massively frustrated and agitated during the game as if a player wanting out which I hope and don't think is the case

bit concerned that we're struggling to brush aside teams that are at a much lower level but as has already been said, this is about Paul Hurst observing and learning. the team are having to adapt to a new style and system so can't expect it all to click overnight. but pre-season does suggest we might need to be patient once the season starts.
i went to the lowestoft game and i think PH might be a bit concerned there isn't as much strength in depth from there (the u23s) as he might of hoped for or been led to believe, pure speculation but just the impression i got on the night.
think more business needs to be done before the season starts and don't be surprised if we come out of the blocks slow but i really hope to be proven wrong on that count.

Watching today, three things were evident to me:

* The centre of the midfield really needs some of our injured creative talents back, as without them we are restricted to just wide attacks for the most part. We were pretty productive on the right with Ward and Emmanuel in the first half and Edwards looked all right in the second.

* We all know we need more signings. Today looked rather like an incomplete first team with a lot of youngsters plugging gaps. That's how pre-season is, of course, but as much as I want some of our youngsters getting their chances, watching today reminded me how few senior options we have at the moment.

* We're definitely keeping it on the floor and knocking iy about under Hurst. Only trouble is it lacked forward momentum much of the time - a lot of sideways passing and switching it but little penetration. Granted that's with an unfinished team, so I'm happy to be patient with it.

and the squad does seem lacking in firepower. last season we started really well scoring goals for fun and i thought mick had finally seen the light (but sadly proved a false dawn as the season unfolded) but it sure was fun for as long as it lasted. i remember fondly the crazy games like 3-4 away to millwall, entertaining games that i never thought i'd see again under mick's watch. if he had of kept that up he'd of made convert out of me! so last season we came out of the blocks fast and then faded, i think this season we might come out of the blocks slow and then pick up. but none of use can be sure for certain, we'll just have to wait and see and hope for the best!

Just seen the goal. Building from the back, movement, options, keeping the ball moving, Haven't seen that for years, can't wait to get down Portman road to see us play some football.

Big concern we will be opening against a Blackburn team that's riding the promotion wave. To avoid a pasting we need to strengthen the current squad pronto. Increasing our offer for Tilt would be a good start.

Another good run out and always good to win.

But, most will certainly see that this squad isn't good enough and with time ticking, it's essential we bring in new permanent signings very quickly.

We are trying to play possession football? But we can only share 50 percent of it with a non league team. Are we really that weak in midfield we can't keep more of the ball against part timers? Slightly worrying.

After the utter rubbish McCarthy served up it looks like Paul Hurst will get more attacking football being played at long last. If that happens the missing fans will return.

I was at the game and I thought we played well in patches. We seem to be playing a much better passing game from the back and keeping the ball on the ground.
Yes,we are short of a few quality players and it shows up in a few positions but I'm sure Paul is looking to resolve this.
I would say we need at least two CB's and two strikers.Midfield should be fine when the other unfit lads return. On the whole I was pleased with what I saw and the journey was well worth it.
We just have to be patient and some should stop knocking the manager after all he is clearing up a terrible mess left by the previous manager.
