Boro Set to Win Waghorn Race as Bid Accepted
Sunday, 5th Aug 2018 10:23

Middlesbrough appear to have won the race to sign Blues striker Martyn Waghorn with Town having accepted a bid from the Teessiders. TWTD was first to reveal that Boro were chasing the 28-year-old at the end of June.

Sky Sports reported that Middlesbrough had had their offer accepted earlier this morning and TWTD can confirm that Teesside is indeed Waghorn's destination.

Talks regarding personal terms are now under way with last season’s 16-goal top scorer and Boro hope to get the deal done prior to Tuesday night’s match against Sheffield United at the Riverside.

Speaking last night, manager Paul Hurst admitted Town would have to accept a fee slightly below their valuation which suggests the offer is somewhere around the £6 million mark up front plus further top-ups.

Previously bids of an initial £5 million from Derby and a bid slightly below that from Sheffield United had been rebuffed.

The Rams had looked the favourites to land the former Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man but their plans suffered a blow when Matej Vydra's sale to Leeds fell through, a deal they are believed to have needed to complete if they were to sign Waghorn in order to stay within Financial Fair Play limits.

The switch will see South Shields-born Waghorn, who cost the Blues just £250,000 when he signed from Rangers last August, return to his native North-East and almost certainly double his wages. The Ibrox club will receive 10 per cent of the profit the Blues make on the deal.

Town will use the cash from Waghorn's sale to make additions to their squad before Thursday's deadline with Shrewsbury pair Toto Nsiala and Jon Nolan expected to confirm their moves on Monday.

The Blues are also chasing Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, who was left out of the Seasiders' team yesterday, and Accrington striker Kayden Jackson, while Cardiff's Omar Bogle, another frontman, is a loan target.

The Blues signed Aaron Drinan from Waterford in January 2018, with the striker penning a three-and-a-half year deal, keeping him at Portman Road until the summer of 2021.

The Irishman was training with Town for two months before he could officially join the Club, although he was quickly nicknamed 'Murph' by his team-mates after former Blue Daryl Murphy.

If he's already got that reputation with the club why the hell is he not playing and why aren't fans demanding that he plays. Come on people its not rocket science we are all complaining that Daryl Murphy wasn't replaced.

No reason that PH can't get all his first choice targets in now - Nolan, Nsiala, Tilt etc. But in addition a striker with Championship experience will be needed to replace Waggs. Bradshaw if he fits the system.

Where is Hurst going to get a replacement of this quality in the time before the window closes? Pity we could have done a swap with Bamford. What now another pointless loan deal probably which are usually a waste of time and keep out our own young talent or like in the case of Lawrence and Celina get one season out of them and are told we cant afford them and they join a rival championship side? Hurst has his work cut out good luck to him but Evans has to help him buy getting some more quality in. We cant expect him to totally rely on unproven players at this level.

Into using Hurst's knowledge if the lower league to bring in players. Think Gwion, Harrison will prove to be fine acquistions, and hopefully he knows what he's getting from the Shrews boys. Thought Donacien had a rocky start yesterday. Looked a bit too Manuel Thetis/ Clueless for my liking. I keep wondering what our European scouts are up to though. We got Knudsen, but since then who else? Surely with our long standing reputation in The Netherlands, there are some fine ball playing footballers we can can pick up for $750K-million over there? The new Reuser? No Pablo playing at a Spanish or Portuguese side then? Surely there are deals to be done out there?

I sometimes wonder what people are looking at. Loyalty should NOT be mentioned. Waghorn goes on a good note from me if price is not bad

Will be a huge loss to Town. How we needed his experience and creative skills yesterday. Carry on selling our best players and we will be down with the Black Cats sooner or later.

If he goes for six million, PH will get 2 (possibly 2.4 million) tops.

It is a pathetic way to run a club. This is like a fire sell. You sell all of your immediate assets and replace with lower league players.

PH might be an absolute genius and work a miracle - i hope he does. We drew 2-2 at home with a promoted club full of former league 1 players - that is where we are at. The performance yesterday was bang average (although better on the eye in places).

PH needs serious backing not scraps so REINVEST 80% OF THE MONEY MADE THIS SUMMER. The player wagebill must have been almost halved (or over a third saved). ME - you have four days to show your intentions for the club.

Sad news...please not another league 1 player as a replacement. The Waghorn departure I think has been engineered by Hurst/Evans for sometime now.

It is only 'good business' if he is replaced by players that will effectively bring quality on the pitch through the season, with the departing Waghorn we had that in him.

For Waghorn to increase in value by this much in one season is great business. We will be building a squad over the next two seasons and I'm sure a percentage of transfer fees in will be made available for new players, players whom the manager has been through tight corners with in some cases before. Paul Hurst will have identified the players with potential selling on value, so we have to trust his judgment in this. We are just working within our financial resources. We only had Brentford size crowds when the manager arrived. Let's hope we can get Brentford's return in league position relative to club size when our crowds start to average above 20,000 again. Then we can start saying we are a bigger club than Brentford and can spend more on players.

Drinan is already out on loan so he clearly isn't in the manager's plans as yet.

Let's hope we buy an experienced Championship striker to replace him. Not on loan, but a permanent addition.

Good luck to Waghorn, but this would seem a good move for everyone concerned, although the overall fee may be a bit less than everyone hoped. That said, £6M is still a good amount, which must be fully reinvested plus wages saved into the playing squad.

I'm sorry the moaners of no more league 1/2 players clearly didn't go yesday: are best players yesday were Harrison & Edwards, Donacien all league 1/2: the worse players were Sears Spence & Skuse McCarthy's players: Support Hurst's decisions: as for Maghorn 6m up front if correct should give Hurst the opportunity to buy 3/4 decent players: it surprises me he is choosing Boro as Pulis is the same type of manager as McCarthy: going to be a busy end of the Window: I'll keep saying I will not judge his dealings till it shuts:

At last some are waking up to the fact that ME is the main cause of Town's decade of stagnation/non progression.

Good for everyone. We will have good funds to continue the rebuild, Waghorn a job near to his homeland and Middlesbrough as they have gained a good player and offloaded an overrated and luxury player in Bamford.

The over inflated fee is the crazy money filtering down from the premiership
The only for Ipswich to progress is to sell at these silly prices & buy from the lower divisions. This after all is what Bobby Robson & George Burley did
Alan Hunter & Paul Mariner came from league 3 I believe. Good luck to Paul Hurst

Talk figures then!!!!!

Gate receipts and sponsorship are basically what a football club lives off.
V's
Wages (not just players ie planet blue, ticket office etc etc) business rates, utilities, policing etc etc.

For every mariner or hunter you name i could name parkin and roberts. 50% success rate at best.

Not knocking the policy. Just saying you need 1 or 2 experienced championship players to compliment and help.

Good business. But fearful that this will only inflate possible targets prices. Worried.

This will virtually end any hope of a progressive season. From what I saw yesterday we will struggle to keep in the Championship. Sorry to rain on peoples parade on here....I wish I could have some of your wild optimism....but I just cant buy into it.

I see the premiership no/8's love child has graced us with his tunnelled vision (he must be so peed off we didn't lose yesterday) re his departed great manager and having a dig! had the departed manager still been in charge Waghorn would still be away(money talks) as for Knudsen it's all rumours as yet! I for one am blocking this clown now until he starts talking some sense and give other people a fair hearing instead of just doing the minus(along with his buddies) click on almost every post, this person is not a Town supporter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have 1 or 2 experienced champ players!

Bart
Chambo
Spence
Sears
Skuse
Knudson (TBC)
Ward

I make that 7

Waghorn wants to go, that simple. He's put the club in a no win situation. Grab as much dosh as possible and spread it amongst the team.

Can't buy into it? Some of you haven't even listened to the pitch.

Just think how many sub standard lower league players we can buy for that sort of money

Oh well we've always got that goal machine sears!!!!! May God be with us. These are dark times. Selling our prize striker and keeping that sorry excuse of a footballer sears. This could be a season defining week at Portman road
