McCarthy: No Sympathy With Fans Who Hounded Me Out
Friday, 26th Oct 2018 19:16

Former boss Mick McCarthy says the section of the Town support who were hounded him out have “got what they deserved” and he has “no sympathy” with them following the Blues’ disastrous start to the season which has led to his successor Paul Hurst departing only 14 games into the Championship season.

“It’s sad for Paul Hurst,” McCarthy told talkSPORT2. “They did make a lot of changes — a lot of players left and maybe a couple of the signings haven’t worked out instantly.

“I think they were unlucky in a couple of games and it can change around so quickly and all of a sudden you’re on the slide. I’m not one to be talking too much about it to be honest.”

Reflecting on his time at Portman Road and the way it ended he added: “I had my spell there, I loved it, enjoyed it and some of them made their feelings known and it’s not worked out for them since I’ve left, has it?

“I’ll make it clear, it wasn’t everybody. It was a fair section of them and I had a real happy time there because there are a lot of good people and I feel for them.

“But I have to say, the ones that were hounding me for 18 months to two years, I’ve got no sympathy for them at all. They’ve got what they deserved.”

Moving on to tomorrow’s game at Millwall which new manager Paul Lambert, whose appointment will be confirmed first thing tomorrow morning with a press conference pencilled in for Tuesday, will watch from the stands, McCarthy added: “It’s never easy going to the Den. So it’s going to be a tough old job for Paul if he gets the job. I like Paul Lambert.”

The incoming boss is understood to have agreed a three-year deal with Stuart Taylor set to be his assistant and Jim Henry Town's new fitness coach, the pair having left Stoke along with Lambert at the end of last season.

This is all a bit unseemly, today of all days, when we've said our final goodbyes to Kevin Beattie, who was nothing if not charitable in his comments about those trying to do their best for his beloved club. And Mick McCarthy (along with Paul Hurst, Paul Jewell & even the reviled Mr Keane) qualifies for that degree of recognition as a minimum. None of them failed through lack of effort (and I can't help feeling there is something wrong within the fabric of the club. I can't pretend I know what that is but I think the ownership of the club leaves a great deal to be desired). But, to get back to Mick, the media is always going to chase him for a comment because, to be fair, he's always good value; and it's inevitable that he's going to say something at some stage. I would myself. And, to be fair, I think he's trying to acknowledge that it wasn't all bad. It was the same for us, as fans, wasn't it? He worked wonders to save us in that first season & then, on very little money, got us into the play-offs. Looking back, I think we can all probably agree that he was here for a season too long. And yes, sadly, it did get a bit toxic at the end. And this comment has gone on for a sentence or two too long so I'd better stop before a section of my own club's fans start hounding me... 😉

Basically swn98 it was a curious PM sent out to posters I have known to be on this thread for some time to see what they thought of the Lambert appointment, not to criticise or point a finger but basically as a poll. So far from from the mainly kind replies I have received more are underwhelmed by his appointment than happy but that could change.

You know now to put me on your ignore list...I won't lose no sleep over it :)

Timmy H, equally underwhelmed. But at the moment, we need someone with experience who has been there and done it so to speak. Sad to say this is the worst Town team I have seen and I fear the football will be even more attritional than last year but we need points however we can get them. It will be a massive achievement for him to keep us up although I do still harbour hopes that Jackson, Nolan and the Bristol Rovers fella may come good in time. We all have to keep the faith somehow!

On day we put our greatest player to rest I'm sure he'd find today very disappointing.

I respect Mick for the job he did for a time but I was one of those “fair section” wanting him out and I don't regret it at all and would do exactly the same again.

And do you want to know why? Because after supporting the club I want to see progress, a plan, some exciting expansive football. I want to see gradual progression, a future, a crop of promising players coming through giving us hope.

I was so pleased when Hurst was appointed and thought he would give us all the above and it hasn't worked out which is really sad.

I think it's low he comes on radio 24 hours after and drags all this rubbish with the fans up yet again.

Clubs in turmoil, we need some direction ASAP and this doesn't help.

Still wouldn't change getting shot of him. We were going nowhere under MM and we're going nowhere without him, so what's changed? Getting relegated you might say . But if your never going to get promoted, what does it matter if you get relegated???? What's the point in playing??

Maybe mick has a point. It's easy for people to throw stones. When thrown back people don't like it. Yes Micks time may have seen its cause, but for people to treat someone likes a minority is uncalled for. Personally I expect better from Ipswich fans and appreciate what someone has tried to do. Ultimately mick left a good foundation for the next person to build from.
Mick did have many plus points. And like everyone he had his not so good points.
The bit that worries me is the article Klug came out with, with my understanding that the team were not good enough.

He has a point. I'm not keen on fans hounding managers even though I was in the camp that felt we needed a change. McCarthy let it get to him and things came to a head at Carrow Road last season. A turning point. He fostered an us-and-them mentality with the fans and it ultimately cost him his job so he has to shoulder his fair share of the blame for how it ended.

I like the bloke, though. One of the good guys in football and he did a good job here on an absolute shoestring. Just a shame he didn't try to be a bit more ambitious, particularly at home and with the young players. I am surprised he's not in a job but, ironically, there will be few better candidates for the next fire-fighting vacancy in the Championship.

I've never booed an Ipswich player or manager yet in the end I felt insulted by McCarthy who seemed to tar us all with the same brush - he got very personal himself at times.

It is a sad fact that there are a bovine section of a Town fans....a democracy allows opinion, social media and the internet a conduit, and a sewage pipe allows sh!t to flow through it....think on that cattle

Annie M, he was asked to comment and did. Just as you felt duty bound to comment yourself. How dare you! Don't drag the legend that was Beattie into this thread. Low blow.

You had your chance McCarthy, you completely lost my respect the day you gave your own fans the bird at Norwich, funny how you forget to mention that isn't it?! No one really gives a flying one what you think anymore

Well said Mick the idiots got what they wanted, Shame the rest didnt get what we deserve.

Top manager who worked miracles for us.

I hope that the mess left by Hurst won't be to much of a mountain for Lambert. But no matter what he will turn us around. Fingers crossed it will be sorted this year.

Geddis78 and the pillock that downvoted me but hadn't the balls to make a comment of his own:

perhaps it was not a good idea to post the McCarthy comments today, given we are saying goodby to a Town player ? It just made me see red, sorry.

Suffolk n good. Fine to call McCarthy every name under the sun when you are faceless in a crowd or a keyboard warrior . Cry like a baby when he gives it back as an individual. Ask yourself, who is the bigger man?

Bang on Mick quite right. All these whinging individuals only believe in free speech one way. However as one of the few who attends all home games and some away I can confirm most of the posters on here don't understand the game , tactics , formations or styles of play. Mick was the best manager for the club in the circumstances it is in. It's no use calling for Butcher/Burley/ Mills/ etc as those days have well and truly gone. League one is a certainty- not because of Hurst- because Mick was hounded out for keeping us mid table.

MM true colours still shinning through ......the ironic thing is it is this type of interview response that is the reason why 1000,s of fans wanted him gone...and he still can't see it .....arrogant to the last ....still he is do8ng amazingly in his current managerial position .....!!
