Lambert: Marcus Has Been Absolutely Brilliant
Thursday, 17th Jan 2019 16:10

Blues boss Paul Lambert is unsure whether he will add to his current total of six January signings and has praised owner Marcus Evans for the backing he has given him during the transfer window.

Alan Judge became Lambert’s sixth addition earlier this week but the Town manager says the Republic of Ireland international might not he his last signing of the window.

“I don’t know,” he said. “If one comes up and I think it’s worthwhile and the football club thinks it’s worthwhile and financially it’s worthwhile, then we’ll look at it.”

Happy with his new squad and confident it can dig Town out of their current hole? “I think we’re a lot stronger than what we were. You can never predict anything but the lads that came in have given us that presence.

“We look a bigger side, they’re guys that know the game, they’re a little bit more knowledgable and I’m delighted.

“They’re here to help us, they’re not here to do anything other than help and if we can get the best out of them and we achieve it, that’ll be great.”

When it was put to him that Evans had invested significantly in his signings - both Will Keane and Collin Quaner are understood to be on wages in the region of £20,000 a week - Lambert was keeping his cards close to his chest while praising the Blues’ owner.

“James Collins has come in, not attached. Simon Dawkins came in, not attached. Callum Elder comes from Leicester, Collin Quaner came from Huddersfield, Will Keane came from Hull and Judge came from Brentford,” he listed.

“Two guys who are unattached and everybody else came in [on loan]. Marcus has been absolutely brilliant.

“We’ve targeted a lot of players over the last few weeks, he’s been really, really great with it.

“We’ve no ill feeling or anything with Marcus, it’s always been really good. We talk a lot, he comes in a lot of times to see us, so there’s no problem that way.

“As I said before, he’s been great on everything. I don’t want people to think that he’s anything other than a really supportive owner, which the football club needs and he’s been absolutely brilliant for us.”

Rotherham are understood to have wanted to sign Quaner, while Judge was also interesting other clubs.

“Ultimately, you’ve got to talk to them as a manager and see whether they want to come,” Lambert added when quizzed on how the Blues won those battles.

“I was asked a few weeks ago about where the club was in the table and would I find it hard to get people to come. That can go against you at certain times when you have to persuade them to come.

“But the lads that are here want to be here, which for me 100 per cent is vital to the whole thing.”

Returning to the cost of loan deals and Evans’s January investment in wages, he added: “I wouldn’t to put pressure on the guy and say that he [should get] me players that are £40,000 or £50,000 [a week], that ain’t going to happen.

“But everything we’ve asked of him he’s been absolutely brilliant, he really has. Whether it’s £20,000, whether it’s £10,000, whether it’s £15,000, whether it’s whatever it is, he’s been brilliant with it.

“He recognises where the club is, he’s not a silly man. He knows exactly what’s going on and I’m delighted to work with him, he’s been very good.”

I thought Judge was a perm but this article seems to contradict that.

I just can't help thinking if only we had Paul Lambert at the beginning of the season! A real breath of fresh air! COYB's

Mojo even Judge has said he is on a permanent contract until the end of the season after which the Club has an option to extend for a further year. We don't know what the transfer fee was.

As good as Mr Evans has been recently and as well as Lambert is doing I still feel we are a couple of additions off of really getting out of this mess the pre-season transfer policy/Hurst has put us in! I feel as fans we really are going the extra mile and putting our time, money and passion into the club during this difficult time and if Evans does the same then even if we go down it will be easier to swallow knowing we've done all we can!

I DO hope the almost permanent doubters will just start to appreciate the financial & moral input that Marcus Evans has made, and is making .We've a real professional Manager doing a great job for us ,and finding great support from the owner .
Many doubted whether good .quality options were going to be available ,let alone be attracted to joining the battle :Paul Lambert has clearly shown he knows the market , the game and the players : how good is that ?
Let's all support this man , the team and everyone at ITFC.

Suffolkboy, I concur! Whether there are further additions this Jan or not I think it's very much moving in the right direction. The realists among us will see the signings are at the upper end of what we can currently expect and PL clearly happy with the support he is being offered. The general feel around ITFC is already a huge improvement on recent months (maybe even years?). A long road ahead but shoots of recovery are very apparent.

Credit to Marcus Evans for this spending. Those wages are a huge outlay when relegation to League One is highly likely, but I suppose Marcus felt it better to keep Lambert and the fans onside. If we do go down we need to sell tickets and keep everyone upbeat, and that is definitely working at the moment.

Appreciate both sides of the 'Evans' debate.
Suppose he's a bit like marmite...
Personally think that he needs to stay for his financial backing and appreciate the efforts to support the manager in the transfer window.
However,
Being the bitter and twisted individual that I am, the cynic in me thinks, if only McCarthy had have been backed when we were in and around the play offs what a different situation the club could/would have been in, and, does the thought of relegation only upset him financially?

God I need a holiday!

Northstandveteran ........... an Owner should never, or have to, force a Manager to spend money on players - McCarthy never asked for more than he got.

Lambert has since confirmed that - and he would know by now.

Marcus spending on players?Wages,Agents Fees,Signing on Fees, and lots more costs i'm sure. However, the minimum has been spent on purchasing players on contract elsewhere. As a result, freebies, loans, out of contract, journeymen.MM made a profit on his signings,PH sold to buy and PL has had to follow the MM template.I'm with Northstandveteran,we had our chance and blew it with the lack of investment at that time.

I have no inside knowledge (just like i suspect no one else on here does) but I'd be pretty confident saying when Murphy was sold, Mick would have asked for a replacement. So not sure I agree with you there Blueboy.

Agree with Northstandveteran et al that we should have invested when Top on New Years day - but again with a lack of inside knowledge I don't know if that was down to Mick or Marcus. We live and learn (or do we learn?)

I'm not screaming for the owner to "get out" or anything like that. And some fans will be happy with his investment and others not. Me personally, he's got a team on the brink of League One, he's brought some players in to help - great. But if he doesn't bring in a right back by the end of the window then he will have failed. I understand it's a tricky window to buy in, especially where you have to wait for other teams to do their business to then see who they are willing to let go. I think we've done well to get the players we have in as early as we did. I also think we should do away with transfer windows
