Sears Out For Nine Months as Town Suffer Another ACL Injury
Monday, 11th Feb 2019 13:13

Striker Freddie Sears has been ruled out for at least nine months having sustained a cruciate knee ligament injury during Sunday’s 3-0 East Anglian derby loss at Norwich City.

"Sears, 29, was subbed just before the break following a challenge with Tom Trybull with a scan confirming he damaged his ACL.

“The scan has confirmed a cruciate ligament injury in his right knee,” Blues physio Matt Byard told the club site.

""“He will see a specialist later this week who will determine the timeframe, but it’s likely that surgery will take place in the next two weeks.

“We will know more from the specialist but with this type of injury, you are looking at nine to 12 months recovery.”""

Sears added: “I’m obviously devastated but I want to thank the fans for their support yesterday.”

The injury is a big blow for the Blues’ already fading hopes of avoiding the drop with the former West Ham and Colchester man having scored six goals since Paul Lambert took charge in October.

Town recently took up an option to keep Sears at Portman Road for the 2019/20 season.

Already sidelined for a similar length of time with cruciate injuries are midfielder Grant Ward and striker Ben Morris, while another young frontman, Ben Folami, is out for a similar period with an achilles injury.

Midfielder Andre Dozzell missed all but the first 45 minutes of last season with an ACL injury suffered on the opening day.

Since when have we had so many cruciate ligament injuries in one season? Im not saying that because I think our fitness team are doing something wrong, im just pointing out how mad it is that we have suffered so many of the same injuries in this season and the last, we are going down but going down with an almighty bang unfortunately, I only wish that our season in league 1 and yes I SAY SEASON because fingers crossed this will give us the kick up the backside we need, some reality checks for some of the players and hopefully a new lease of life for us as a whole football club.

FFS! We have not been good enough this season, that is true. But I don´t feel we have had any luck either.

If it's true that these things even out over the season, we've got a great three months ahead of us.

Gutted. If there was one player you know would act professionally and for the team, it's him. I hope it isn't bad as he really doesn't deserve the misfortune having continued to push to play even when dropped by Hurst. The others really need to step up now as the pressure will be on someone else to score ...

Gutted for Freddie, he has been one of our main bright sparks from a very bad season. Its nothing do with training, it is a clash in a tackle and his knee has been jolted back against its normal joint movement, anyone who saw the replay could tell it was bad.

I called the ACL as soon as I saw it and was hoping it would not be :-(

Get well soon Freddie.

Right, thats it! Wholesale change 2.0. Pull the first team off and make them spend the rest of the season painting the turnstiles and put the U23's out and give them a run. At least they already successfully gel as a team & know each other and can actually score at that level. Blood them and see what they can do. No point in sticking loans and scraps of useless players out when its clear even to most die hard of optimistic fans, we've definitely not a chance now. So let's see the future get some real practice and have fun and see what comes of it.

Best wishes to Freddie for a full return to fitness. No doubt some tough months ahead, post surgery, but take strength that all we'll all be with you - 100%.

Can't imagine how much more bad luck can come our way. I'm in no way superstitious, but am thinking seriously about revising that view in respect of our club! No choice other than to work through it - and do so with an eye on closed season's actions to get us right. There's going to be a lot for ME/PLto think about, and decisions to get right. (Not high on ME's 10 years' list of positive achievements balance sheet).

Father God- I pray for ITFC to be a source of joy, hope and fun for all who love the club. Please restore the family friendly atmosphere and community focus. Give the supporters patience with the team and one another. Please keep the players fit and help those already injured to recover quickly and fully; make them players who want to play for one another and for the fans. And please, please help them score a hat full of goals and tighten up at the back. Up the Town. In Jesus' mighty name I pray. Amen!

Hopefully our run of bad luck will finish by the end of this season, then we start a run of good luck from next season. Oh boy we deserve some. This run of luck can't carry on. If your to put a timescale on it, it'll be for around 10 years at least we've had this luck. Surly we need several seasons to compensate.

Oh I didn't say, but I will argue to say that sears has been our player of the season up to now. Someone will have to do something special to take it now!! All the best Mr Sears

Thejock, what a bizarre statement. Are you Doig in disguise??!! If I delve really deep to try and put a positive spin on this I'd say Harrison looked lively Sunday as a replacement.

That's why I wasn't too critical yesterday of the defeat. It looked to me they gave their all even though they fell short. I couldn't fault the effort even if unfortunately the execution was ultimately lacking as the league table always indicated was most likely to be the end outcome. All our players put their bodies on the line and didn't flinch at any tackles (including full-blooded 50:50s) and consequently this very serious injury was the end result for Freddie. I know they are professionals and that's what they are paid to do but don't forget they risk serious injury whenever they step over that white line for our entertainment. They undoubtedly showed the passion and effort but sadly just came up a bit short in quality. Hopefully that's something Lambert can get on top of before too long as worried the fans will start to turn on him as this is ultimately a result's business after all and those have not been kind to us under his watch thus far. However, I'm going to reserve judgement till around Xmas time as I fully recognise this is a long-term project and patience is going to be needed I think. Most of what Lambert has said and done sits well enough with me. And this is coming from somebody who wasn't that excited about his initial appointment who badly wanted Burley back in the building. My only slight criticisms of Lambert thus far would be calling out Kenlock on his defending of a cross. And not playing more of our own instead of loans. But my gut instinct is telling me we have a fighting chance with Lambert, even if we have to do it the hard way via League One. But hey ho what do I know, as I'll hold my hands up (see below). And for what little my opinion counts I can't fault Lambert on his passion and desire to get Ipswich back on track again. But there isn't going to be a quick fix to this and we need to be patient. Remember Norwich very nearly ran out of patience with Farke and look where they are now. I guess this quote springs to mind:

"I would never tell a plumber or, a lawyer or a journalist how to do his job, but they all know better than me every Saturday." Joe Royle

I'm not saying we shouldn't voice our concerns and be critical of things we perceive as being incorrect calls from any of our mangers (current, past or future) as those sorts of conversations are what makes football as colourful as it is not only on the pitch but off it too. But in truth you'd like to think the man at the helm knows better than 99.9% than us and that certainly includes me. Admittedly I wasn't a fan of Mick McCarthy but do I think I could ever get the Republic of Ireland into the Quarter Finals of a World Cup without their star player, not a bl**dy chance in h*ll!
Football managers are only human and they do make mistakes like we all do in our own jobs, but when they make a wrong call it's laid out bare in front of thousands of people to dissect and comment on after via the social media feeding frenzy. Take the Chelsea manager yesterday, vilified for their embarrassing performance. Yet they already happen to be in a Cup final very soon to be played (how many teams would like to be going to a final at Wembley this year of any description!) and they also took 3 points against Man City in the reverse fixture. When Chelsea beat Man City earlier in the season their new manager received all the plaudits and not many managers will be able to say they took 3 points from Man City this season. But football seems to be about instant judgement, jury and execution these days. Does it take just 1 or 2 bad particularly results in the modern game to mean a manager has lost all credibility, no matter what achievements they have managed all the months and years before. If everybody was consigned to the scrap heap in all walks of life after 1 or 2 particularly bad days at the office the scrap heap would be up to the moon by now I imagine!
And I want to say while I'm not a fan of having too many players on loan I can't fault the passion they showed yesterday, players like Judge and Chalobah gave their very all yesterday and looked desperate to get a result. And I thought Chalobah played excellent apart from a couple of sloppy balls in the 2nd half that nearly cost us dear but up until then he had been superb. I would still ideally prefer just 1 or 2 quality loan signing at any given time though rather than 5 or 6 or more. The loan market is to our own young players what the mass import of foreign players is to our international team.
Anyway, that's enough waffle from me.
Best wishes Freddie, a long road to recovery in front of you but no reason why you can't shine for Town again in the future again. Your time will come again, you just need to keep the dream alive through thick and thin.
