Rotherham Eyeing Former Loanees Ward and Adeyemi
Friday, 31st May 2019 16:20

Released duo Grant Ward and Tom Adeyemi are interesting their former loan club Rotherham United.

Ward, 24, and Adeyemi, 27, are both out of contract having been told they are surplus to requirements by the Blues at the end of the season.

Adeyemi missed most of 2017/18 with a hamstring problem and then all of last season after picking up an achilles injury in pre-season which eventually required surgery.

The former Norwich youngster only made a total of four starts and one sub appearance for the Blues.

Ward, who made 75 starts and 23 sub appearances for Town, scoring eight goals, saw his 2018/19 cut short when he suffered an ACL injury at QPR on Boxing Day.

“They are definitely players who have come up on our radar,” Millers assistant manager Richie Barker told the Rotherham Advertiser. “They are on a list of players for us to talk about.”

Ward spent 2015/16 on loan with the Millers from Spurs making 35 starts and eight sub appearances, scoring two goals.

Adeyemi was with the South Yorkshiremen, who will join the Blues in League One next season, in 2016/17 from Cardiff, making 29 starts and one sub appearance, scoring seven goals.

“They are both players who have been at this club before,” Barker added.

“The gaffer [Paul Warne] knows them as people and everyone knows how important a player's character is when it comes to us making signings.

“Conversations with them haven't taken place but we wouldn't be doing our jobs properly if we didn't know that both were available.”

knowing our luck they will prob do really well there if they do end up signing for them. ward looked like a world beater for 45 mins for us and then the music stopped!

And Adeyemi looked really good against Norwich for 45 mins, then he didn't come out second half and that was the last time I ever saw him!

MooseJuice added 17:13 - May 31
Yep, Adeyemi did well for them when he was there. Watch him go play 40 games now and bag himself double figures! 🤦‍♂️

I wonder how much Adeyemi was on per week? I’d love to know how much per game he cost us, I would guess £250k.

Ward was on £10k a week, allegedly & he was so inconsistent.

I’ll drive them both there.

I do feel Adayemi could ultimately be the one that got away. Time will tell.
I wonder how insurance works if they have long term injuries and can't play ie. I wonder how much he really cost per week or whether clubs just have to swallow it.

Both players have huge talent, the issue is fitness.

Ward will come back and bite us on the arse. Adeyemi not so sure.

Don't think much of their scouting set up then.

Another 2 poor signings by the gobby one. That join the many others.

The thing about Ward is he could be a good player. One who I suspect might have come with a Bryan Klug reccomendation, scored 8 goals at Town, 3 on debut. What happened to that promise? A barnstorming 1st game and slowly down hill from there.

A shame really but too often ineffective in a Town shirt for me.

both destroyed my mccarthyism.....

Difficult decision for the club to make and there were suggestions that in the final week leading up to publishing the retention list that discussions were still ongoing regarding taking up options. I would be interested to know if we could take an option extension on a player but reduce their wages in line with the relegation clause. None the less I don’t think anyone can be critical of releasing these two lads under the current circumstances.

Grant Ward really failed to nail down a permanent place and was consistently inconsistent in his performances. Either as a winger or a box to box midfielder he rarely showed a goal threat following that dream debut hatrick. Very rarely did I see him provide a killer ball for an assist. Strangely I think Bryan Klug always thought his best position was a proper wingback, and he played him here a couple of times when in charge, the first against Forest away where a lapse in concentration saw him let a man get away from him and then bundled him down for a penalty. Interestingly though BK suggested Grant didn’t like this position as he often played him there in his days managing the young Spurs team. I actually think BK saw the best position for him if he was prepared to accept this and work at it given that he had the right attributes to play this role but given wingbacks (as opposed to attacking full backs) are not part of PLs game then Grant has too much better opposition in the other positions to want to sit on the bench in League 1.

It’s a great shame about Tom Adeyemi as I think he could have slotted in to the Chalobah role, however, clearly I think there is a lot more to his injuries then we know about, when he first joined the club he had a mystery illness for the first few weeks. It smacks of some deep physcological problems and I don’t think we could continue to take the risk. He was paid for two years for 5 games, I think had I been in his position I would have been enormously grateful for the clubs support and offered to play for nothing until I proved my fitness. But hey that’s not the way of the world.

Adeyemi to recover fitness miraculously if Rotherham sign him and Ward to score against can see it now if it happens.

could be spilled milk, no good crying over it now, cost us money that could have been better spent. As has been said ,will probably have a good season elsewhere, sods law .

McCarthy certainly ruined Grant Ward... his "style" of play would ruin most players.
