Town Could Receive Third Summer Sell-On Windfall as Brighton Close in on Webster
Tuesday, 30th Jul 2019 17:32

The Blues look set to receive a third sell-on windfall of the summer with Brighton and Hove Albion widely reported to have made a £20 million - plus add-ons totalling a further £5 million - offer to Bristol City for ex-Town centre-half Adam Webster.

Talks between the clubs are said to be ongoing with the Seagulls confident of landing the 24-year-old, who would become their record signing.

Webster joined the Robins from Town for an initial £3.5 million last summer with the fee potentially rising to £8 million and some of those top-ups are almost certain to have been paid over the course of last season.

TWTD understands the sell-on clause in that deal is just below the previously reported 10 per cent, while Portsmouth would be due 20 per cent of anything the Blues receive as a result of their sell-on from the 2016 move which saw Webster join Town and Matt Clarke move to Fratton Park.

Therefore, Town appear likely to receive an initial sum just above £1 million mark with further cash after top-ups.

Bristol City had put a price tag of £30 million on Webster, but even in an inflated market it appeared very unlikely that they would achieve anything approaching that figure for the ex-Pompey man, who has never played in the Premier League.

Town have already received one sell-on windfall from a move to Brighton this summer via Clarke's switch from Portsmouth with the Blues believed to have yielded £770,000 from that switch.

Tyrone Mings’s move from AFC Bournemouth to Aston Villa for an initial £20 million plus potentially another £6.5 million saw the Blues receive £1.2 million now with that windfall potentially reaching £1.85 million.

Who cares, Evans won't invest it into our squad for one of the most important seasons in our history and town fans on here will defend him for it. Utterly baffling

This has been an excellent summer for Evans. He must have been fearful after relegation but millions in unexpected sell on fees which go some way to offsetting the £9M shortfall. Add to that huge wage savings from players leaving, reduction to current players wages as a result of relegation and Barts on loan, it's looking very good. The sake of Harrison also helped. Of course, none will be invested into the playing squad as the strategy yet again appears to be loans - not the permanent additions PL wanted.

How do we always sell players so cheaply! Simply unbelievable.

BlueMachines how is £8 million cheap?

You just know that if he'd stayed with us, and if we'd had the season Bristol City had, there's no way we would have got £20m for Webster. Our performance in the market in the last decade can't just be down to bad luck. The sell-on clauses are silver linings, but the clouds are rather large...

Evans obviously won't reinvest as he's only looking to get some money back rather than spend the money on getting us back up !
Just treading water until he can sell imho.
Mings, Clarke and Webster........ we could have had a great defence !

BlueArmy_81 - it's only baffling if you don't understand the laws that govern the game.

"Financial Fair Play (FFP) was established by UEFA to make sure that football clubs were not spending more than they earned and, in doing so, prevent them from falling into financial troubles which may endanger their long-term survival"

Read up on it here: http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/scmp.php

Your agenda against Evans is dull mate.

Support the club, it'll have ups and downs across your life.

Ask someone in 1964 if they thought they'd be European Champions in 1981.

Support Man City if you can't cope with it.

WE SUPPORT THE IPSWICH, IF THEY'RE DOWN OR IF THEY'RE UPPP

Why do we do such rubbish sell on clauses?
Yes Webster was a great bit of scouting by the club & yes it was great to be able to sell him for the £3.5m+ fee, but Pompey got Matt Clarke (who was very highly rated by many here) thrown in for about 1p AND they got a 20% sell on clause inserted. We were 2 leagues above them at the time & surely should have had the greater bargaining power with the player wanting to advance himself!
I know ultimately the club will still make money overall but doing the deal, but it could & should have been so much more.
On a less ranty note; good luck to Webster in the Premier League, he is a classy footballing centre half, so he has a real chance of making an impact. I just wish we got to see more of him.

If Webster is worth £20 mil I'm a monkeys uncle. Good defender but never worth that

BlueandTruesince82 added 18:06 - Jul 30
Len, did we not have 20% sell on for Clarke?

Sorry you find it dull BGD. I find Town being a laughing stock, whipping boys and a poor third rate club compared to Norwich duller. I've lived in Liverpool for 25 years now so if I was one for turning into a turncoat I think I'd have done it by now. I think you confuse my desire for Ipswich to be competitive and a club to be proud of again as in some way not supporting the club. You couldn't be more wrong. It's because I love the club so much and because the cause of our demise is so obvious for any one with half a brain that I am doing all I can to address the cause. As a fan you shouldn't be so accepting of and apathetic towards our pitiful state, that doesn't make you a great fan imo, far from it.
Ps we didn't win the European Cup in 81, we won the uefa.

Websters problem was he played alongside captain calamity. He was also injured a lot so we never saw his real talent. However unlike the sale of Dalian Atkinson we do have a sell on clause

I'm sorry to say BGD, bluearmy_81 won't read the link you supplied it seems he is only interested creating a toxic atmosphere.
The insults keep coming for anyone who has the audacity to have a different opinion to his.
"obvious for anyone with half a brain" !!!

I'm not interested in creating a toxic atmosphere rab, I'm interested in waking some of the dozy ones on here that seem oblivious to the harm Evans has done our club over 12 years up!!

Good with all these windfalls and up to 50% wage deductions, and our highest earner of our books, maybe all this talk of a shortfall should demise,

Must be the worst deal ever. Initial £3.5m worth £20m plus one year later. Only 10% sell on but we agreed 20% with Pompey. Well done Marcus.

So bluearmy_81 you are still not able to read the link BGD has given you or read the ITFC a/c's and get your calculator out and do a few simple maths.
But still those that don't share your highly toxic opinion are dozy and only have half a brain, I simply do not understand why you think you have the right to throw such dreadful insults to a huge swathe of ITFC supporters, its simply horribly bullying tactics that have no place on any form of public forum.

Blueandtrue:
Yes you are right, it was a 20% sell-on both ways with Webster & Clarke ... although they kinda got 10% back by taking Harrison off us for only £450k!!
It does seem to me that we have not done great with the sell-on aspect in recent years & should be looking at insisting on 20% in all cases for the 'real potential' players like Dozzell, due to the madness of the current market. We have seen Webster go from £5m'ish to £25m'ish in just one season when Premier League Clubs are involved. We do have quite a few talented young players, who genuinely look to have the capacity to make it at, or at the very least to attract the interest of, Premier League clubs.

Rabbit, I have read it, it was nothing I didn't know already. If you think FFP means we can't spend even modest sums on players fair enough, I'd suggest it doesn't completely excuse the chronic underinvestment we've seen recently. A convenient line for Evans gobblers though. You are a sensitive flower aren't you?!! 😂 Does that count as an insult?! Sorry if I've offended yet again!! 🤣

Evans get your hand out of your pocket and spend some money to get us back up. After all, its you who have got us in this muddle in the first place. So do something about it man!

Bluearmy you just don't get it do you .
A lot of mine and I think others issue with you isn't your dislike of Evans.
Despite saying several times that I am no massive fan of his you label me and others as sycophants, unambitious , having an Evans love in etc etc . The problem is you turn every post into an anti Evans rant .even when it's good news.
ITS BORING !!
