Boss Paul Lambert says central defender James Wilson has fully deserved his new 18-month deal with the Blues.

Wilson, 30, signed a short-term contract which ran to New Year’s Day in the summer after impressing on trial but penned terms which run to June 2021 yesterday with the club having an option for a further year.

“I think he's done well,” Lambert said. “I think he came in at a really difficult time, no pre-season and I know from previous experience that going on trial is hard so credit to him, he's deserved it.

“He's done really well and as I said before we need that cover in that position.”

He added: “I know exactly what it's like when you go on trial. You've only got a short amount of time to try and impress people and hopefully you do well in those games, but with no pre-season what he's done has been incredible really.”

Wales international Wilson, who left Lincoln by mutual consent in the close season, has made 11 starts for the Blues having made his debut on the opening day of the campaign at Burton Albion.
