Warnock Blues Link Revived
Sunday, 1st Mar 2020 11:09

Neil Warnock is reportedly “waiting in the wings” should Town look to make a change of manager in order to get their stalling promotion challenge back on track.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the 71-year-old, who left Cardiff earlier in the season, is Town’s preferred successor to Paul Lambert if the Scot’s time at Portman Road were to be brought to an end in an attempt to arrest a slump which has seen the Blues win just four of their last 23 games over 90 minutes and slip from the top of League One to ninth.

Rumours that Warnock, who plans to retire this summer, would be a target should the Blues look for a new boss previously circulated just after Christmas prior to Lambert signing a four-year extension to his contract, which runs to 2025, on New Year’s Day.

Warnock, who knows Blues owner Marcus Evans, has been spoken to about taking over at Town in the past, most notably after Roy Keane’s departure in 2012, and we understand would be interested in the role should it become available.

Quizzed on the links with Town job in December, he told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT: “I think I get linked to everything, all managers do, don’t they? I think that’s how it is at the minute, they’re all talk and everything and you just don’t know.

“But, like I say, if the right thing comes up, I’m not really bothered what it is, I just want to enjoy myself to the end of the season really.”

Docterblue, your post makes a lot of sense ,I know it's a lot lower standard but culverhouse has kings Lynn flying scoring goals for fun. Maybe he might be worth a punt let's face it he can't do as bad.
Only thing is will Marcus pay up Lambert,s contract?

I don't think culverhouse would be frightened to give our premier class players a long overdue kick up arse.

Cant see it happening. He is definitely not the answer. I would much prefer a younger manager. Nigel clough would be one worth considering definitely.

Only allow Lambert to go if Evans personally pays his departure costs. Evans was stupid enough to sign him for too long so he should be personally responsible for the costs. Not the club. Evans has done enough damage.

Evans won't sack PL. equally, there seems little point bringing in a new manager now. No time to change anything.

..... why wait jason0999 ? - would at least keep the crowd level up with some renewed hope, rather that expect more of the same.
No brainer for me to do it now - why let the rest of the season drift aimlessly ? - which we are all expecting it to do.

...... there wouldn't dare be a shirker in the dressing room with Warnock around - what little motivation Lambert may have had - has long gone, and won't return now.
Lambert out - Warnock in - NOW.

Agree Blueboy, the crowds are going to decline and that's nearly as much of a disaster than not reaching top 6. A possible sticking point could be if there is a ‘get out of jail card' in lamberts contract then that might only be activated once it's impossible to reach the playoffs.

Although it would be interesting to see what Warnock could do in the final 10 matches, as he is only interested in a short-term appointment I don't think it's worth it. If he would stay on for next season then might be worth a punt. Having said that Warnock's not an Ipswich-type manager in the way that Roy Keane and Paul Hurst weren't.

My preference would be to sack Lambert sooner rather than later and get someone new in who's not afraid to have a mass clear out over the summer and bring in his own players - someone like Karl Robinson assuming Oxford fail to get promotion.

Lambert is just totally nonplussed, inanimate and dreary , [aided in part by extended contract when he had done nothing to warrant it ] He just gets prickly when asked questions or challenged, Can imagine him knocking quietly on dressing room door and asking if its ok to come in sometimes. [ Chambers and Skuse sitting sucking their thumbs completes the picture.] Someone needs to give them all a f#cking shake up.

God forbid no...warnock is a jackass and would be a short term replacement. Lambert has to be given the chance to get us out of this mess...what with autumn international suspensions and boneheaded team rotation..it has gone pear shaped but a managerial change is not the answer and warnock most definitely is not....

Robthemonkey -: Unfortunately I think you may be talking about the previous Villa owner called Lerner?
I don't think it seems likely he's going to re-invest in English football after his last experience here.

Any other wealthy owner would be very welcome tho. Please form an orderly queue.

Warnock, the future of itfc at a mere 71 years young!!! "Big" club struggling + out of work manager = paper talk. 2+2=5

At 71 obviously not a long-term solution but surely anything has to be better than Agent Shambert right now! Warnock has got a proven track record of getting teams up although he has usually struggled to take the next step after promotion. But given his age that's not a problem we need to worry about too much. We're obviously looking for a short-term fix although if that were the case we should of acted at least a month earlier. I said before Xmas I was concerned we might not even make the Play Offs. Clearly Evans saw in his questionable wisdom otherwise, hence the 5-year head scratching deal given to Shambert!
It may just be paper talk but the fact Warnock knows Evans might mean there is something in it. I have to say once upon a time Warnock was the sort of manager I wouldn't of wanted Ipswich to touch with a bargepole. However, I read his book a few years back and I have to say I saw him in a much better light thereafter. Given the situation we find ourselves in right now we can't be too fussy. The frying pan is already on fire thanks to Shambert so we may as well ****ing jump!!!

And Shambert's assistant Stuart Taylor doesn't do us any favours every match ranting and raving to the assistant referee. The guy seems to complain about every decision. If I had him in my ear for 90 minutes I'd be very tempted to swot him away as wouldn't want that annoying buzz in my lug for 90 seconds let alone 90+ minutes! 90 minutes of him in your ear would be enough to start it bleeding Deontay Wilder style!
The referees obviously talk amongst themselves. If you keep moaning at them about anything and everything needless to say they will gladly take their revenge where it hurts most (i.e. out on the pitch!). I don't mind managers or assistants complaining when we're on the end of obvious an awful decision but Lambert and Taylor seem to dish it out to the officials a lot more than most! If you moan way too much to the officials they won't take us seriously.

On a short term, 18 month deal, why not? proven record in promotion. Unless Lambert sacked tonight fail to see how anyone else has time to get us promoted by Lambert certainly isn't so give Warnock a go.
