Former Town defender Tommy Smith has left Sunderland at the end of his short-term contract without having played a game for the Black Cats.

The New Zealand international joined the Wearsiders in February having left MLS side the Colorado Rapids at the end of their season in November and after a spell training with the Blues’ U23s.

Smith, 30, who was brought to the Stadium of Light as cover after Bailey Wright suffered a season-ending ankle injury, didn’t make an appearance for Sunderland before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis, although was an unused sub on two occasions.

ITFCsince73 added 10:54 - May 31 Remembering Chambers on this very platform 18 months back saying it would be embarrassing and unforgivable if we were to end up in L1....hoping to hear back from him sometime this week, on his thoughts on our lowest ever league finish, while in L1. My god, I only hope we come out the other end, with a damn good freshen up to things.....oh wait no 8 has extended.....dear god.

JewellintheTown added 22:25 - May 31 Level playing field at the moment with match fitness and recent game time so I think Tommy is as good as any others we've got fit. Sentiment aside, at L1 he will be OK to have & if he wants to play for us that's worth more to us than more capable players who aren't as bothered. Worth a punt if the price is right I say.

Paulc added 13:53 - Jun 1 Listen to everyone shouting "sign him up". And pay him with what? - we were on a budget before Covid, and now we've lost one of our biggest revenue streams for who knows how long - have you lot not been reading the news?

Berts_chin added 23:19 - Jun 2 Other than Wolfie, Tommy would be the best central defender at the club so pair the two together. Can't imagine Chambers ever making it to a World Cup, remember Tommy went through the whole tournament unbeaten - and that included a match against Italy.
