Tuesday, 6th Apr 2021 13:50

Town’s U23s closed the gap on Bristol City at the top of Professional Development League Two South by beating the Robins 4-2 at Playford Road this afternoon with Freddie Sears, Aaron Drinan, Tyreece Simpson and a visiting defender grabbing the goals.

The strong Blues’ U23s line-up, also featuring David Cornell, Mark McGuinness, Keanan Bennetts, Armando Dobra, Myles Kenlock and Tristan Nydam, took the lead on 31 when Sears netted from close range.

Five minutes later, Drinan made it 2-0 from a Dobra through ball, then on 40 a City defender turned a Sears cross past his own keeper.

The visitors pulled goals back on 70 and 74 but four minutes from the scheduled end sub Simpson shot into the bottom corner to make the points safe.

Second-placed Town, who are coached by Kieron Dyer and Terry Butcher, are now eight points behind the Robins with both sides having played 21 matches.

U23s: Town: Cornell, Andoh (O'Reilly 60), McGuinness, Clements, Kenlock (Crane 72), Gibbs, Nydam, Dobra, Bennetts, Sears, Drinan (Simpson 65). Unused: White.

Half that team should be starting in 1st team now. Without Norwood, Sears and Drinan are the most natural pair of strikers at the Club, and for all those that critise Freddie, just look back at the records which show that whenever he has been given a run in the side up top, alongside a (ideally physical) striker, he has banged in the goals. We over-complicate and focus on the unstable/unfit game changing players when we just need solid sorts playing in combination.

Save Norwood until he is fully fit, play these 2 and get Kenlock, Gibbs, Nydam, Dobra, and even Bennetts back in the 1st team picture for the weekend.

We need goals so whatever combo works.
Defo bring back Kenlock as offers more than old Ward. Dobra must start too and would hope to see Nydam on bench as he was head above rest until injuries. Not keen on Bennetts tho as he fluffs too many chances and not quick enough. Maybe another youngster who has pace as many L1 defenders are slow.
