Town Confirm Burns Signing
Thursday, 3rd Jun 2021 18:08

Town have confirmed the signing of forward Wes Burns from Fleetwood on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, TWTD having revealed that the move was close to being completed this afternoon.

Burns, 26, becomes the first addition of the Paul Cook and Gamechanger eras.

We understand the Blues beat off competition from Championship side Coventry City to land the former Wales U21 international.

“I’m obviously delighted to get the deal done and sign for what is a massive football club,” Burns told iFollow Ipswich.

“I spoke to the manager and Mark Ashton [CEO] and I know the ambitions they have for the club.

“I have worked with Mark before at Bristol City and Oxford and I know what he wants to achieve in football.

“He told me about the takeover and getting Ipswich going in the right direction. It’s an exciting time for the club, seeing the ambitions they have and that is one of the big draws for me coming here.

“The manager made it clear as well that the target is getting promoted to the Championship next season and then to kick on from there. The long-term goal is to reach the Premier League and I’m thrilled to be part of that challenge.”

He added: “I'm delighted. It's good to know it's all sorted and I'll be playing my football here next season," the 26-year-old told iFollow Ipswich.

“I've spoken to Mark and the manager [Paul Cook] and from what they have said, everything is pointing in the right direction. The things that have happened with the club recently; they played a part in me wanting to sign.

“Last season I was playing in a right-back position but it was a free role to get up the pitch.

“I like running at players and getting shots away. I had a good goal return in the second half of the season and the goal I scored here on the last day of the season is probably one of the best in my career!

“I've played at Portman Road a few times as a youth player and as a pro and it's always had a great atmosphere. It's a fantastic stadium for a massive club with great history. I'm looking forward to it being my home ground.”

Burns came through the youth system at Bristol City and while at Ashton Gate Burns spent time on loan at Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United, Cheltenham, Fleetwood and Aberdeen.

Having made six senior starts and 48 sub appearances for the Robins, the Cardiff-born right-sided attacker or right-back returned to Fleetwood on a permanent basis in January 2017.

Burns, who has made 134 starts and 42 sub appearances, scoring 23 times since joining the Cod Army on a permanent basis.

Last season Burns netted six times, including that goal in the final-day 3-1 defeat to the Blues at Portman Road.

Very good signing especially in terms of physicality and athleticism which we have been painfully lacking in recent seasons. Need to sign more players with similar attributes in different positions to get out of this league.

The first of many new signings. We asked for the clear out, we are getting it, now fill it up again with good honest players. Just one word of advice Wes steer clear of the number 4 and 8 shirts.

Excellent signing. Unlike what we've to watch (home and away courtesy of iFollow) this guy is class.

Welcome to ‘The Town' Wes. Sounds like he can play anywhere on the right so will fit nicely into Cooks favoured formation. First of many, so good work ITFC.

Interesting that he was sold on getting in on the ground floor of a team he sees as destined for the Championship and probably the Premiership. If you could have signed for Leicester when they were in League One you would knowing where they are now.
Also, interesting that it isn't a photo op with the manager, but with the CEO.

Looks like a real quality player! All credit to Mark Ashton - couple of days in the job and first signing done. Been a fan for 55 years and the most excited I've been in a long time. Can't wait for the new season!

From the very little I have seen of him I am delighted by us signing him, anyone with any doubts watch the interview on Ifollow as it it shows his goal against us or locate it elsewhere if you can, he has all the attributes of the type of player we need to keep the club going forward!! First signing of the new era is a bloody good one, looking forward to more!!

So we beat off competition from a Championship club, paid an actual transfer fee and got someone in who can actually score goals from midfield/defence. Would never have happened under Evans. Gamechanger and co. starting to make good on their promises.

It,'s amazing how some on here only read half of the report and go off half cock. Read it all, digest it, then post a comment. It's not difficult. Oh, welcome to you Wes.

After all the talk, to be honest I was still slightly worried we might just target out of contract players but Wes is a good signing and really shows some intent on behalf of the club.
And whilst we may end up with a few "frees" this is a great first signing in the close season.
So welcome Wes, I look forward to seeing you rip past some static league 1 defence and supply our forward/s with plenty of assists.
