Edwards Signs for Wigan
Thursday, 10th Jun 2021 17:47

Wigan have signed winger Gwion Edwards on a free transfer after he decided against extending his stay with Town.

The Welshman rejected the Blues’ offer of a new deal and was unveiled by the Latics today after completing a medical and the necessary paperwork.

Edwards, who scored 14 times in 109 appearances — 96 in the league — under managers Paul Hurst, Paul Lambert and Paul Cook, has signed a two-year contract at the DW Stadium, which will not officially kick in until the start of next month.

The former Wales U21 international spent three years at Portman Road following his £700,000 move from Peterborough and said: “I’m really pleased to get it sorted. I’ve travelled up from Swansea and done a medical and met everyone, and I’m really happy to be here.

“I'm looking forward to getting started. There were a few clubs after me and Wigan was one of them, so the turnaround over the last few days has been quite quick.

“I’ve played here before against Wigan, and know about the club, and know about the manager. He (Leam Richardson) sold the move to me with the ambition of what they want to do, and where they want to go. It’s something that I want to be part of.”

He added: “I know a couple of lads here, and I spoke to the manager who told me about the plans on how he wants to play, and what he wants from me. It’s really exciting.”

“The style of play suits me down to the ground. He’s watched me for a number of years now, and likes what I do and thinks I can be a part of his team. I will try and help us push forward and reach our goals for the season.”

Not sure why some are choosing to be negative about Edwards. He was the typical frustrating winger who looked great sometimes but too often drifted out of games, or followed a bit of skill by shanking a cross. He was another who suffered from being adaptable and was often played out of position, especially last season when he was played right back/wing back. Wigan made him feel wanted and the arrival of Wes Burns here probably made him feel the opposite regarding Town.

Wigan have new owners too and a decent young manager, so they could well be challenging for promotion too. It's potentially a sideways step rather than a step down......

We need consistency and 100% from all our players next season if we are to get promotion and I'm afraid Edwards doesn't meet the standard. Good luck Gwion except in the two matches against us.

Inconsistent and injury prone and obviously lacking sense or ambition----off you go!!

Keep getting told how bad out players are and how poor the team is. Both league one seasons we've spent most of our time either in automatic promotion spots and in the play-offs. The rest of the time just off the play-off positions….. but all the players are terrible? The idiocy of football fans never amazes me, I expect it.

He was a terrible signing not good enough even for league one. Glad to see the back of him. So weak falls over in a breeze and those row z dead balls basically sums up what he's about.
