Edwards Signs for Wigan
Thursday, 10th Jun 2021 17:47

Wigan have signed winger Gwion Edwards on a free transfer after he decided against extending his stay with Town.

The Welshman rejected the Blues’ offer of a new deal and was unveiled by the Latics today after completing a medical and the necessary paperwork.

Edwards, who scored 14 times in 109 appearances — 96 in the league — under managers Paul Hurst, Paul Lambert and Paul Cook, has signed a two-year contract at the DW Stadium, which will not officially kick in until the start of next month.

The former Wales U21 international spent three years at Portman Road following his £700,000 move from Peterborough and said: “I’m really pleased to get it sorted. I’ve travelled up from Swansea and done a medical and met everyone, and I’m really happy to be here.

“I'm looking forward to getting started. There were a few clubs after me and Wigan was one of them, so the turnaround over the last few days has been quite quick.

“I’ve played here before against Wigan, and know about the club, and know about the manager. He (Leam Richardson) sold the move to me with the ambition of what they want to do, and where they want to go. It’s something that I want to be part of.”

He added: “I know a couple of lads here, and I spoke to the manager who told me about the plans on how he wants to play, and what he wants from me. It’s really exciting.”

“The style of play suits me down to the ground. He’s watched me for a number of years now, and likes what I do and thinks I can be a part of his team. I will try and help us push forward and reach our goals for the season.”

I liked Gwion and thought he was a decent player in spells. Best of luck with Wigan.

Amusing that many on here think that we've become a major super power over the last fortnight. There is no reason as yet as to why Wigan wont finish above us next season. Perhaps Gwion knows something that we dont.

Good luck to him but really not that worried.
Too inconsistent.

Result, possibly the most lightweight player ever to pull on a Town shirt. Carries nowhere near enough of a threat to warrant a place. Won't be missed.

On his debut for us, he was superb, thought we had found a real top player. Unfortunately that was the last time he showed anything. PC must have thought he had something to offer the squad, probably as a backup. Can't say I'm sorry he decided on Wigan, frees up a wage.

Sometimes very good but often uninterested and sometimes just poor. Had decent pace and skill but no football brain IMO. Sadly I think he always has and always will be playing for Gwion Edwards rather than any side on whose teamsheet he appears. Won't lose sleep at his departure.

Signing for Wigan about says it all...very patchy player, played pretty poor 2019/20 our first season in league one and should have gone then. Last season started pretty well and thought he proved me wrong then had that injury around December/January and came back and was back to his old ways.

Probably past his best, what ever that was.

Paul Cook didn't want him. He said the whole team could f$#k off as they were not good enough. Gwion has - good luck to him playing for someone who wants him.

I lool foward to watching Accrinton Stanley, Wigan, Portsmouth and Bristol city players join our club. And possibly the lad who can pass it sideways from WBA.

He's said what every player says when they join a club including ours. He didn't say why he didn't want to be here and there is no way it's about a lack of ambition. As I've alluded to Cook well and truly poisoned the well during those 16 games. He's perhaps realised the key to any success Cook has had is Leam Richardson? I doubt he's being paid more or if so much more than we offered, given they aren't swimming in cash.

Yes his delivery was intermittent and he had other flaws, but he is a lower league player and we are a lower league club at the moment, he's never gonna be Messi is he?

And I find it quite ignorant of some on here to refer to Wigan in such disrespectful terms, Several times on this thread its been said that the 2013 FA cup winners who spent 8 years in the Premier league are a small club with less ambition or expectation etc, whilst we kicked around midtable championship for the best part of 20 years, granted Wigan are not the team they were, but neither are we.

Hopefully Wigan will put Gwion on free kicks and corners when they play us 😀

Edwards knew he was offered a deal so we could get a fee for him. Not why some are flattering ourselves against other teams when we really have no right to

''The style of play suits me down to the ground''

Maybe a veiled dig at rarely ever being played in his favoured position?

I wish Gwi all the best, but in all honestly he knows he would of struggled to get first team action here with what we're doing. PC probably wanted him as a squad player with no guarantee of first team football and this why he had chosen to leave.

A few more people with brain cells seem to have come on here since 8pm. How we can sit here and get carried away before we've even seen any of these new players play for us. The most exciting thing is that we have fresh ownership and a proper structure being put into place for a modern football club, and not just some guys who work for Marcus Evans winging it.

How people can say that Gwion has gone down the football pyramid to a much smaller club, where he is 'finding his level'. To a club with 'less ambition and potential' where the 'expectation levels are lower'.
Going to a team that were in the Premier League from 2005-2013 and that 2013 year they played in the FA Cup Final, and have had rough ole time of it in the past 18 months with their dodgy take over. They were only relegated from the Championship, because they were deducted points, and had to sell all their best players because of it. We got relegated because we were playing rubbish, and we have been doing so outside the first few months of both seasons in League One.

I for one wish Gwion well. This obsession with him only ever having one good game. When we were flying near the top of the division he was one of the main contributors, and about our only player capable of beating his man and getting a cross in. I'd like to see the stats on Gwion getting crosses in over anyone else playing in the past two seasons. It certainly won't be Bennetts!

He's probably being told he'll be allowed to play on the wing and not have to cover at wingback when we have injuries and that he's only Cook's 3rd favourite Welsh Player at the club. As soon as the other two Welshman who had played with him before at U21 national level, he couldn't wait to get out of here!

Hope a fresh start works out well for you Gwion.

Whilst some of you want to sack off all the players you were dying to get into the first team not so long ago, I hope we hold onto Bishop, Downes, Wolfie & Dozzell, to give them chance to flourish with some more experienced fresher legs around them in the Evans/ Burns mould. Ward/ Chambers/ Skuse and co were too past their sell by date to give those youngsters a helping hand. Let's hope with some fitter, more eager bodies around them, we can see the best of them in 2021/22

There's some ability there but Edwards is far too inconsistent. Occasionally sublime, often went missing and sometimes abject. Also very lightweight.

I wish him well but can't say I'm disappointed by this. Best for both parties.

Well said Mariner1974 there is so much sh1te posted on here that I very rarely bother to come on and read the articles. It's really disappointing but unfortunately a sign of the times to see so called fans continually slag off players behind a keyboard. None of us knows what goes on behind the scenes at a football club. Yes Edwards and other players haven't really delivered but then who has at ITFC recently ? and do they deserve to be slagged off on this forum …no they don't. Yes we can all comment on how good or not players are but try and do it with some dignity but unfortunately we end up with juvenile and moronic comments being made. I wonder if those making the comments would make them to the players face? I think not… and I am sure they wouldn't have said them to Mick or PL and got away with it, they might have ended up with a Glasgow kiss… I used to enjoy coming on here and reading the stories and the comments but reading the vitriol aimed at Edwards Skuse Chambers et al I won't be coming back any time soon and maybe the facilitator of the site needs to start to take some responsibility and caution some of the posters but in the current climate of social media that's probably not going to happen…enjoy your summer folks and try to be less angst life is too short..,

Not good enough like the rest of the midfield in the last few seasons. Wont be the last to leave by a longshot.

Midtable league one player, probably where Wigan will also be around. Would expect him to say something to the club and fans after 3 years but hey ho, good luck to him never the less.

A decent performer among a very poor side. Personally think he may have been an asset within a better team. Looked like he cared, made an effort and I wish him well. He clearly wants to be playing regular first team football and didn't see that happening here for whatever reason.
