Morris On Target as U23s Win at Crewe
Monday, 23rd Aug 2021 14:03

Ben Morris scored his first goal for the U23s since January 2020 and Tawanda Chirewa and Cameron Humphreys netted in the final five minutes as the young Blues beat Crewe Alexandra 3-1 at Gresty Road this afternoon.

Morris, 22, playing only his second competitive game for the side managed by Kieron Dyer and Bryan Klug following his return from his second ACL injury, netted after 29 minutes to see Town into the lead.

However, the home side levelled through Max Woodcock in the 66th minute.

But Town weren’t to be denied their first victory of the season and on 85 Chirewa, who also scored in last week’s 2-1 home defeat to Coventry having also found the net regularly in pre-season, was found by Morris on the edge of the box and hit a shot on the turn into the corner of the net.

Midfielder Humphreys sealed the three points in the final minute with a 20-yard free-kick.

U23s: Bort, Alexander, Clements, Healy, Stewart, Armin, Ward (Curtis 59), Humphreys, Morris, Chirewa, Siziba (Nwabueze 76). Unused: Williamson, Andoh, Smith.

Would like to see Chirewa given a chance in the first team. He looks ready

Tractorboyolly. I'm sure if he keeps going he will get a chance at some point in the future. But let's be realistic here. Hes playing against teams of a similar age or younger. So not sure hed be ready for the more physical side of the game in lge 1, just yet. Let's allow him to walk before asking him to run. Could maybe have a great future if handled correctly.

I get your point blues1 but Dobra isn't a big lad and neither is Conor Chaplin. Maybe a dub appearance at home when we hold a comfortable lead might be the right answer

Pizza Trophy TractorBoyOlly… in fact I suspect it will be an U23 side for all those games plus “fitness” for the injured first team players. Kenlock really has been frozen in Carbonite hasn't he?

Boss man. But dobra has played several games before hes started to get to grips with the physical side of the game. And Chaplin has played at championship level so lge1 isnt a problem for him. I agree that maybe if we are in a good position in a game he could get some game time. But to put him on the bench, then a 1st choice 1st teamer has to be left out. So if things not going well that could be a waste of a spot on the bench. As wouldnt want him to be put in a position where the pressure on him to score. Mind you, rather have him on the bench if it meant keeping Jackson away from the squad.

Good to see Morris back at it scoring goals again, hope his injuries are now behind him and he can get some much needed games.

Players are not going to get picked for the first team on the strength of their performances in the u23s the standard is so poor. They need to impress in high intensity training games or go out on loan to get valuable experience like for instance Tyreece Simpson who's doing well at Swindon.

Always liked look of Morris in his 10 minute opportunity

They must really rate Morris. Given the mass cull and him having had two crucial injuries, I was a little shocked he survived. Let's hope his bad luck is behind him and he can kick on. 🤞🏻

Those who've watched Ben Morris play several times will realise that this boy is a talented footballer who scores goals. He's had two ACL injuries but if he can get himself fit he's definitely in with a good shout for the first team. Chaplin is an okay player in league one but didn't cut it in the Championship. Morris will be a surprise package as as mentioned he's a different league to Jackson
