Chirewa Scores Again as U23s Draw at Barnsley
Tuesday, 12th Oct 2021 14:22

Tawanda Chirewa continued his excellent early-season form in front of goal as Town’s U23s drew 1-1 with Barnsley at their Oakwell training ground.

The Tykes went ahead through Fabio Jalo in the 71st minute but Chirewa equalised for the Blues seven minutes later.

The 18-year-old has now scored four goals in Professional Development League Two South this season and also grabbed a brace in a 5-1 win against Southend in a friendly in September.

U23s: Bort, Agbaje, Clements, Alexander, Armin, Baggott, Curtis, Humphreys, Morris, Chirewa, Siziba. Subs: Healy, Yengi, Ward.

Must be worth a go in the Papa St Joke trophy at the very least! If not perhaps a worthwhile loan, such as Tyreece Simpson is having this season at Swindon, could be on the menu. Ashton apparently likes using loans as a way to develop players so it wouldn't surprise me.

Yes the lad needs to go out on loan when he's ready. Players first team chances are not judged on performances in these low key games. They are assessed in high intensity training games. El Mizouni worked his way into the first team squad without playing any u23 football at all this season. Ben Morris has been disappointing so far this season maybe he's still working his way up to full fitness . The striking position apart from Bonne in the first team is not the strongest so his first team chances have not completely blown out the window.

Chirewa and Yengi: I hope these guys get a chance soon and that their paths are not blocked by our over-sized (?) squad. We want players from our own ranks, ideally. That was always the Ipswich way where possible.
