Ex-Aberdeen and Bristol City Boss Applies For Town Job
Tuesday, 14th Dec 2021 12:30

TWTD understands former Bristol City, Aberdeen and St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes is among those to have applied for the vacant manager’s job with Town.

McInnes is well-known to Blues CEO Mark Ashton having worked with him at the Robins between 2011 and 2013.

However, it's not believed the twice-capped former Scotland international midfielder is a leading candidate for the role.

The 50-year-old left Aberdeen in March after eight years at Pittodrie, during which time he saw the Dons to the 2013/14 Scottish League Cup.

While at St Johnstone Paisley-born McInnes saw the Saints to the 2008/09 Scottish First Division title.

Speculation that former Millwall and Cardiff boss Neil Harris has been offered the job is premature with interviews for the role continuing.

As previously reported, Harris has applied and we understand is under serious consideration for the position. The Orsett-born ex-striker is the bookies’ favourite at 3-1 on.

Harris’s former Lions and Bluebirds assistant David Livermore was at last Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Charlton to run the rule over the Town team.

Meanwhile, it’s believed veteran former Sheffield United, QPR, Cardiff and Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock is not under consideration.

Interim manager John McGreal will take charge of the Blues at Barrow on Wednesday and may well be the man in the hotseat for Saturday’s home match against Sunderland.

If McInnes isn't a leading contender then we must be chasing someone far better than Harris. If it really came down to a straight fight between those two McInnes is a far better bet.

And for once I agree with Blues1…. Well almost. I'd find it very difficult to be happy or even vaguely comfortable about a man as despicable as Warnock leading my team. Forget the horrible football, he's a nasty piece of work. He's even had me applauding Gary Megson.

This ought to be a dream job for a young and ambitious manager, with money to spend on players he wants and the opportunity to take ITFC from the third tier division right to the very top of the top one, in just a few seasons. Never been done here before? Oh yes it has!

He has a limited record.

I understand that we are a League One club, albeit with potential, so that will limit our choices; Allardyce and Lampard will be beyond us!

Why not think outside the box? Glenn Hoddle would get us playing proper football. If he is deemed unacceptable due to his stupid remarks on the disabled, why not someone like John Terry (with an experienced assistant).

I heard a name mentioned of BBC radio Suffolk the other day that might be worth a shout, and he's an ex player......
Currently, AS Monaco assistant manager......
Sylvain Legwinski!

Monkey - Agreed, Warnock would be top of my list of ‘last person on earth I'd want as Ipswich manager' for sure.

The more names I see linked with the job, the more I think McGreal should be given the opportunity to prove what he can do for the remainder of the season.

Other than maybe Manning none of these excite me. But thinking back Booby Robsons appointment was the same. A man who had failed at Fulham & had not set the managerial
world alight. How wrong we were proved

Snowy blue, that's a good shout must admit I never thought of him but it's a better option than a lot of names being branded about .

I think the board already have their man. Its gonna be a big name, a marquee signing and he'll be revealed prior to the game when the Americans are coming over. They love the theatre of stuff like that. I think John Terry.

I can say 100% Harris will be next Ipswich manager all but signed from close source inside the club..... Before anyone says anything believe it or not some people know people on the inside.
Get those bets on.

Both Sir Alf(came in as manager with no experience) or Sir Bobby without any success and fourth choice did no wrong and provided us with the best seasons our club have seen, so it's very difficult to make any managerial choice the only certain thing is that whoever comes in will not be every ones choice but deserves our backing as we cannot turn into a change for the sake of it club.

The bookies are rarely wrong there is a reason Harris is 1/3 he will be our next manager like it or not

Doesn't matter who the next manager is, if he's treated the same way PC has been then he doesn't have a hope. Nobody can turn a club around in that space of time, particularly one in such disarray as Town.

If you ask Aberdeen fans, they were pleased to get rid of him because he was a staunch 4-2-3-1 merchant and refused to change the system when things were not going right. Has too many similarities to Cook ethos. Don't think he is a bad manager but I would be really surprised if he gets the nod. Did poorly at Bristol City so if he was there when Ashton was there he would have sacked him.

You can forget Lampard that's a pipe dream.

There might be a couple of left field candidates in Jokonavic and Marsch (if he doesn't take up a coaching job at Man Utd under his old boss and mentor Ragnick) birth are currently free.

Mogga's contract expires at the end of the season and hasn't been renewed yet so I wouldn't be surprised if his agent is drumming up interest to put pressure on Blackburn.

Harris in my opinion will be a very decent call, if you do some research on him you might be surprised. Very flexible, evolutionary rather than fixed style, adapts to the players and players abilities that he has rather than fixated on a formation similar to Sir Bobby's approach.

Totally relaxed if it's Harris, I don't think he will bring an army of people with him either. Great motivator and decent bloke. Just needs to get us to Championship and consolidate there for the next steps. Can review in a couple of years if we think he has what it takes to take us further but I am all for giving the chance. Having said that if somebody like Marsch was interested I would be very intrigued to see him and how he does, having a recent failure he might just want to be like his mentor Ragnick and drop down a league or 2 and enjoy rebuilding a team and taking it up through the leagues.

The thing with Sir Bobby was he played a system that suited the players he had, not change players to suit a system he liked

Hopefully JM has worked that out, he seems better tactically than Mr Cook already

Let's hope we get this one right as the way we're going Manager of the Month won't be an award but more likely an appointment!

Pep or Klopp would be a risk for us. Anyone half decent is worth employing on short term deal, we are in the depths don't forget

Is it me or is this the most uninspiring bunch of candidates ever !! I can't see any of them setting the world alight. beginning to lose interest now lol

Marsch is an interesting one. My perennial shout is Roberto di Mateo, but this time as Director of Football with Liam Manning as Head Coach. There'll be a lot of tactical nous there and the young coach will get the chance to work with a Champions League (and FA Cup) winner. Di Mateo could depart after one or two seasons leaving Manning to take us onwards and upwards.
