Town and Imps to Show Solidarity With Ukraine
Monday, 7th Mar 2022 18:44

Town will wear all blue and Lincoln City their yellow third kit when the sides meet at Portman Road tomorrow to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

In addition, there will also be a minute’s applause prior to kick-off, as was the case at Fleetwood on Saturday, the corner flags will be Ukrainian flags, while there will be a large flag in the Cobbold Stand.

The teams will also unite prior to the start of the game for a collective photo and display.

The British Red Cross's Ukraine Crisis Appeal will be holding a collection in and around the ground with all proceeds going directly to those suffering in the conflict, while donations can be made online here.

“Everyone at Ipswich Town is horrified by what is happening in Ukraine,” Town CEO Mark Ashton told the club site.

“We want to show our full support for the people of Ukraine and to all those who are suffering from this terrible conflict.

“The British Red Cross will be collecting around Portman Road with all money raised going directly to Ukraine, so please dig deep where possible.”

Imps CEO Liam Scully added: “Like many people, I have been following the events in Ukraine with sadness and a sense of despair.

"As a club we have made changes to our social media and also shown a message of solidarity on the advertising boards at LNER Stadium.

"Tuesday’s game against Ipswich Town will see both sides come together to show our support and thoughts for the innocent people of Ukraine. We are calling for peace and our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted.”

Town have also asked fans to play their part: “In times of adversity, football stands together. We ask that all supporters attending Tuesday’s game show their support in whatever way they can.”

How about burning the Russia flag in the centre circle before kick off...

Very sad times in the world at the moment. Dosent seem to be a solution to prevent this horrible thing escalating. The repercussions of other countries getting involved in the war could be horrendous bearing in mind Russia's nuclear arsenal. The only people who can stop this are the people of Russia themselves turning on Putin. In the meantime the world must help the people of Ukraine as much as they can. God bless them.

I dont think this is a good thing. Taking sides in a conflict like this seems foolish when most people haven't got a clue what is going on.

Celina21, you are clearly deaf and blind,
there will be 25000 people attending tomorrow who are in support of Ukraine. Bit of advice if you are going, don't wear your Ruski shirt.

We support the freedom of the Ukrainians to choose their future and deride the russian invasion at Putins will.

Im going to turn up late for kick off then! I come to football to get away from the problems of the world and society issues! For me and me only It is a form of escapeism!
I dont agree with the invasion but now it seems there is always something on the outside interfeering with football! Just wondering what the next thing will be!
We got laces, taking the knee, this, wearing a certain flowers, badges to represent something! Just fed up with everything!
A lot of hypocrisy everywhere!
90 minutes of escapism from reality is all i want

churchmans I agree with you in general. There are a lot of partisan politics being pushed by clubs that on the surface seem like good causes, but when you look into the organisations that push them, you can see that they are trying to hold power over people and be treated as a special class with extra rights, like the right not to be offended or disliked.
Freedom and democracy are core values in our country and it is right that we come out and express solidarity with a nation under attack. At the same time we shouldn't assume that all Ukranians are angels and we shouldn't demonize normal Russians. For anyone who wants to burn a Russian shirt, think of the British politician who makes you feel least proud of your country be it Clement Atlee, Tony Blair, or Boris Johnson then consider whether you would ban a British flag based on the actions of your worst leader.

Can we hang some posters of Putin at the back of the nets in the opposition goal to shoot at - pun intended?

Celina 21 - That's literally (and I DO mean literally) the most stupid comment I've ever seen on here!
Churchmans - You're right to turn up late. I hope you enjoy your escapism. What the Ukranians wouldn't give for a bit of that right now eh?

Well done to both clubs on this! Serious question: How is this allowed and poppy wearing on football shirts isn't?

For those saying politics in sport ,we have that every game with players taken the knee.

A lot of tripe being spouted on here as per usual. Agree with Paulc and largely with Europablue.

Again, a bunch of unaffected people voicing their 'entitled' view about how hearing or seeing about other peoples struggles makes them uncomfortable. Football using it's platform to provide demonstrations of unity being criticised by those who've been highly unlikely to have faced wartime conflict or persecution in common society because of who they are. Pathetic.

Churchmans. I can entirely understand where you are coming from and sometimes I fear we overload football with some of these issues. However, millions of people in Ukraine can't get any escapism because the actions of Putin and I hope as part of the collective reaction from around the world that this will help show those poor people that we are supporting them. Hopefully it will be of some comfort and whilst Putin won't take any notice of Ipswich & Lincoln doing this, it helps reinforce the resistence of civilised society to his actions.

Bluefish you haven't said anything to prove me wrong and only made yourself sound foolish.

I made the point that most people don't know what is going on and you made your russophobic comment based on there just being lots of people there. How does that create any argument against what I said whatsoever? It just reinforces my point and highlights that people like you are ignorant and happily going along with whatever the flavour of the month is without thinking for themselves.

So once again, I don't think we should be getting involved in a war that we know nothing about (even if it is just engaging in spreading propaganda). You probably can't even tell me what is the reason behind it so don't make russophobic comments and ask me to wear a skirt. If you knew I was a male that would be transphobic and if you knew I was a female that would be misogyny. I'm not offended personally but just be careful because you can end up in the slammer these days for comments like that.
