Police to Speak to Burton About Walton Missile Incident
Wednesday, 17th Aug 2022 10:43

Staffordshire Police say they will speak to Burton Albion about the incident in the second half of last night’s 1-0 Town win at the Pirelli Stadium in which keeper Christian Walton appeared to be struck by a missile thrown from a section of the home support.

Walton required treatment following the 64th-minute incident and subsequently was spoken to by referee Ben Toner.

After the match, a number of Town fans drew the incident to the attention of the police via their Twitter account.

Walton was one of the Blues’ top performers as Kieran McKenna’s side made it three wins in the last three league games to go a point clear at the top of the table.

Hope they find who was responsible and take appropriate action. A cowardly act which could have resulted in serious injury. This sort of behaviour seems to be creeping back into football, the Colchester game a good example, with their fans damaging seats and throwing them.

I wonder if Burton have considered going cashless in their ground? Lol

Fully agree

Watched it on ifollow and watching some of the crowd so called fans from both sides you can clearly see hand jesters and you could clearly see what they were saying. Don't understand why football fans are so nasty towards other people they don't even know.

Even on here some of the comment towards fellow fans who are just viewing an opinion is unbelievable, I guess that is just the way of the world these day.

My nephew keeps asking me to take him to a game but really not sure I should

I was very surprised that post the incident, and after the item was passed to the 4th Official and head steward there was no change in manning behind the goal. No extra stewards were moved there nor police.

Considering the far corner of the Ipswich fans had about 12 police and a similar number of stewards for the whole game it seems a bit strange than an area with an actual incident occurring would not be suitable for placing redundant resources.

Karlos- take your nephew to a game at PR. You get swearing and gestures in walks of life not just football games. Sadly you can't protect them all the time. The games at PR are normally exciting and hectic but that's the fun of it. I'm sure he will enjoy it immensely.

Should not be hard to find the burton fan who threw the object at walton as there was only 12 at the match.

If this stupid and dangerous throwing missiles nonsense (amongst other things) isn't immediately stamped out and taken seriously with serious punishments, it wont be nets needed behind the goal, it'll be bullet proof glass.
No player, especially a keeper, should be stood in a goal wondering when the next crack on the head will come.
Disguising and hope they lock the idiot up for good. ITFC supporters thankfully seem better than this and hope that continues.
Most importantly, I hope Walton's OK, not just physically but mentally too.

Why do people do this type of action these days? You know cameras are everywhere. Ok, if you are a true fan, you do not want to be ban for life from the stadium and every other (note the stupid act also of running on a pitch during a match - was it worth it for not seeing a live game forever???). Clubs will be fine and those fans are the first people to moan the club are not buying players or upgrading facilities!!!! Lastly it's Assault!!! criminal record!!!!

Burton Albion forum post is suggesting, maybe he made it up and if so they deserve an apology. Tin pot club who play anti football and hopefully we never have to play there ever again.

Agree with Tivo. After the incident, more stewards came behind OUR goal in their hi-viz jackets. Nothing similar at the Burton end from where any "missile" had been thrown.
Must admit I rather lost the plot with the "Supervisor" steward in our end, drawing his attention to the fact he was very overweight and that his resources should have been directed at the opposite end - all very politely of course.

Itsonlyme

I go to many games a Portman Road

Against Charlton I sat next to a an elderly who we had a great chat about Sir Alf days (before my time) the Charlton fans I met in the car park were funny with friendly banter plus the Charlton song we want the ball and we got the ball is what I think football is all about.

Against Bolton I was near a fan who knocked Ipswich player for the slightest mistake and several people asked him to stop swearing but only got abuse back.

But you are correct in what you say so thank you I will take him and hope I end up next to nice Ipswich fans

I've always found Charlton fans to be approachable and friendly Karlos.

This was probably the act of some drunken half-wit.

However, potentially (note potentially) there is a darker side. If you are a betting syndicate with money n a Burton win, why not try to injure our goalkeeper?

Going cashless as proposed would not stop people having some sort of object on their person be it coins or anything else to use as a missile.
Someone must have seen the culprit do it so I would hope they would have the decency to speak up about it and inform the appropriate body to catch the t*#t.

Have to say back in the 80s roughly 18 box line in the West stand Ipswich fans were doing the same I went out ,told the police who completely ignored it,so sadly nothing new but needs stamping out

Agree KarlosF… So called fans of clubs including our own, that do gestures to opposition fans that are miles away. They need to take a long hard look at themselves. It's not brave and it's not clever! We are better than that at Ipswich, if not we should be.

I'm an Ipswich Town fan first and foremost but I'm also a football fan!

I can honestly say, I've NEVER been tempted to throw anything on to the pitch during any game I've watched... and I've watched a few in my lifetime.

What must have to be going through a numbskull's mind to think that's a good idea or in any way acceptable?

Modern technology, being what it is these days, should help to identify anyone conducting themselves in a poor manner and should be used in any legal proceedings against such idiots to rid the game of thuggish fools.

I'd report anyone I saw doing something of this ilk to the nearest steward or club representative, even a fellow Town fan, if it meant we were all free to enjoy our club and our game without having to suffer this stupidity.

Come on Burton, get to the bottom of this criminal act and ban the thug for life!

Ban the fan for life and close the area of that stand for 5 games and see who wants to do it again! Pathetic

Do I read into this that despite live footage and object being passed from referee, to fourth official, to steward, that nothing was reported by Burton Albion to their local constabulary, ie. all brushed under the carpet but for fans reporting it. Police response would indicate so.
