EFL Matches Postponed as Mark of Respect
Friday, 9th Sep 2022 11:37

Town’s League One game against Cambridge United at Portman Road and all other Premier League and EFL fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been postponed as a mark of respect to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, who died yesterday aged 96.

A statement released by the EFL reads: “Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

“This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

“Further information, in respect of how football, clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point. Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.”

Town are set, as it stands, to return to action on Tuesday evening when Bristol Rovers visit Portman Road.

Ipswich Town Women's FA Women’s National League Cup determining round tie at QPR on Sunday is also off.

Meanwhile, BBC Radio Suffolk's Life's a Pitch will not be broadcast on Saturday.

My god. Some of the comments on here are just more proof of how vile some human beings are. Its all me,me,me. I won't be able to go to the rearranged game, im gonna lose money bcse it's been called off. Show some respect for gods sake. Whether a royalist or not, and I'm not particularly, stop thinking about you, and think about others for a change. I do think that games could well have gone ahead, with a 2 minute silence prior to the games. But reading the comments on here, maybe thats a reason they're not. Bcse would those silences be observed correctly? Maybe. But with the attitude of some on here, possibly not. This is a one off event and all some think about is themselves. As I said, I'd have liked the games to go ahead but totally respect the reasons they arent.

What better way to show respect for those that live outside London but to gather, yes at a football ground, and hold 2 minutes silence. Am glad that we we currently still have a Tuesday game so that opportunity and experience is not taken away from us completely. Not what our Queen would have wanted, which should be the starting point with these decisions !

Would the Great Lady herself wanted this ?

Actually done me a favour as I couldn't make tomorrow's game - the postponement, not the death of her majesty.

In the wider context, I'm comfortable with games being postponed as a mark of respect. it's not like it happens every week - plus it gives plenty something to moan about, our good start this season has reduced the opportunities for some people to date!!

blues1 I think the point is that there are a lot of us who ARE thinking of other people in criticising this - the people that have booked travel and accomodation already, the people who will lose income because of this decision, the impact on an already stressed economy (when we can't afford decent social care etc.). I, like others here, happen to think a proper mark of respect for that great woman, would have been to hold these events and sing the National Anthem loud and proud. But my main concern is for all those others affected by this decision which, reading 90% of the comments here, seems to have missed the mark. COYB.

Thats my weekend ruined. I suppose it will be wall to wall News all weekend now. Maybe they can play the games on the dreadful international break weekend and cancel the Nations League garbage, at least that would be a silver lining.

It's a period of NATIONAL mourning . It's called respect . Sorry but I don't agree by the views being expressed on here about a football match. No one complains when they are called off gif international games.

This underlines why society has frankly gone to the dogs. Cue the down arrows demonstrating my point entirely.

Oh there's a surprise - blues1 having a go at people because they've got an opinion. Seems like these forums are all about you, you, you all the time.

Most people on here are saying how much they would like to have shown their appreciation for the Queen publicly and I totally agree. How lovely it would be to have a collective minute's silence, followed perhaps by another minute's applause before the game started. Far more appropriate than all sitting at home in silence. She was an amazing lady and deserves the appreciation of the football family, as we deserve the opportunity to show it.

Could have played in our black kit and 2 mins silence as Mark of respect for Her Majesty. I'm sure she wouldn't have wanted posponments.

19781981twtd - pretty sure if there was a vote done by the club and not this website for moaners, Blues1 would win.
For once, I completely agree with what they and ArnieM have written.
The country shuts down for a weekend - it's not like we are in a lockdown with Covid again. Stay in and talk to the wife, or get down the pub and get on it - the wife/mother/husband won't care , they are normally glad to see the back of you for a couple of hours!!.

There must have been a way of staging the match in a respectful manner (such as a two minute silence, players wearing black armbands and a band to play the National Anthem).

National mourning? ArnieM. Enforced grieving on people who - whilst respectfully sad - don't feel it's rught to ve compelled to be told what to think and do by an elite. Feels more like North Korea than a modern democracy. Is that the "gone to the dogs" you're referring to?

Sorry but I don't agree with morning a life that was full, she lived a great life and led the country well! She was 96 and this is sad however no tragedy, the little girl who died in a shooting was a tragedy!

She was a wonderful monarch and would not have wanted anything postponed , a life as great as her majesty's should be celebrated and not mourned!

The country and many businesses have suffered over the last couple of years!

For me the funeral is the time to mourn and express condolences , outside of the day of the funeral should be celebrations!

Like many others, I have mixed feelings about the game being called off tomorrow. But a packed PR observing the silence, rapturous applause and singing the national anthem would surely be a fitting tribute than 30,000 sat on their sofas or milling about 🤷‍♂️ I may be wrong but that's my opinion. A sad time and a loss of a great woman. RIP Your majesty and god save the King.

As respectful as the postponement is, i too would have preferred the opportunity to show appreciation tomorrow with 25000+ of you and the solitude this enforces on us in comparison achieves nothing.

BUT, some of the royal bashing on here is a disgrace, ignorant and frankly doesnt have any place on anything to do with ITFC.

Her majesty was one of a kind, GENERATED money for this country through tourism and paid her taxes in full.

I'm absolutely NOT a Royalist, elements of it are out of the stone age in my opinion but Elizabeth II wasnt, she was a one off and deserves little more respect. I shall miss the game sadly, i dont agree with it, but I do understand it

Some of the most moving, and memorable occasions have been when football comes together, at a game to commemorate or mark a tragic event. That would have been the case on Saturday.

I remember going to the first game after 9/11 and it felt a bit weird to be watching football at such a time of grave, global uncertainty.

But the death of our 96-year-old Queen is no shock or surprise; there is no risk to our lives or welfare from her passing. Her death is sad and important for sure, but should be treated as a coming together to reinforce our UK identity, which we would have done on Saturday.

Don't agree with this in any way shape or form, nor do I believe this is what HRH would have wanted. National anthem, minute of silence. Bring all fans in the country together to mourn, show unity and respect, not sit at home alone and mope. Life must go on.

BluJu added 13:21 - Sep 9
People need to remember that this was not the decision of the Royal Household, but the wonderful FA, who seem to have single-handedly generated a wave of negative feeling towards the monarchy. Well done them. Another stupendous decision chalked up.

Don't forget to stay in and mourn, y'all... no sneaking off to the rugby, cricket, pub, shopping or other disrespectful pastimes.

PS: people are entitled to feel upset about not going to the football, as are those upset at the Queen's passing. Many fit into both camps. You can't tell people off for being upset.

I think it's the wrong call by the EFL. I'd much rather see stadia up and down the land paying their respects and getting on with life...as I'm sure Her Majesty would have wanted.

Monkey_Blue added 13:33 - Sep 9
I'm 50/50 on this. I guess the vast majority of the population have no recall of the previous death of our Monarch. I wouldn't have been upset if games had gone ahead but this is the most significant passing in over 70 years in this country so I'm not angry at the postponement of one game. It's also a fairly local one so I doubt there is going to be too much disruption to people over travel plans. Those of you losing it over the postponement need to calm down a bit.

HappyKitten added 13:45 - Sep 9
There is no concistancy (have I spent that correctly?), anyway there is none. I was going to miss the game because my wife is taking me to London to the theatre, according to their web site "In accordance with the wishes of the Royal Household, performances will continue".

Bit surprised at the negativity here, I'm definitely not a monarchist and not in mourning but rightly or wrongly she was the Head of State and it's not as if this is a frequent event. 70 years since the last time, won't be 70 to the next one. Was looking forward to going tomorrow, but can understand why it's off. Sorry for the minority who will lose money already spent on travel, but the game being off is really no big deal.
