Burns Left Out of Wales Matchday Squad Thursday, 22nd Sep 2022 21:46 Blues wing-back Wes Burns was left out of the matchday squad as Wales were beaten 2-1 by Belgium in Brussels this evening.
The 27-year-old, who has previously won four caps, was one of four players not to be included in either the starting line-up or on the bench. Former Blues striker Kieffer Moore netted the Welsh goal.
Burns will be hoping to be included when Wales are in action on Sunday against Poland at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Elsewhere, Town centre-half Cameron Stewart also missed out on a cap having been an unused sub as Northern Ireland’s U21s were beaten 3-1 by Scotland in a friendly in Belfast. The teams meet again in another friendly in Paisley.

It's the way of international football, a manager assembles a squad and trains with them. Then he picks the starting eleven and substitutes that he thinks are the best from the squad for that particular match. Burns may get the nod ahead of someone else on Sunday, he may also get some pointers as to why he is not quite the force this season that he was last year and come back improved and raring to go. Of course, he may also play on Sunday and get badly injured. Let's hope not, but at least we now have a squad and manager at Town that should be able to cope with temporary and long term absences.

This may be controversial but for me there is too much international football. The World Cup and Euros would be enough and I would scrap the UEFA Nations League and many of the friendlies. It creates fixture congestion and takes players away from their clubs (unnecessarily in Burns' case if he doesn't play on Sun)

Well, while we will miss Burns, the less game time he gets, the less likely he is to get injured.

I dont think he's been fully fit all season. He was carrying a injury at the end of last season and being involved with Wales hasn't helped his case at all.

Totally agree RWB....stop start season as it is. I generally let out a huge sigh when internationals are pending!

Don't mind this situation at all. Not playing will give him a rest that he seems to need and I'm interested how we perform without him against a top side. As many have said, he's firing not on all cylinders and seems to lose the ball a lot, I'm hopeful that between Edwards and KVY we've got enough in the team to offer attacking threat and defensive cover. Burns has been a bit weak on the latter.
