Turnstile Change For Sir Bobby Robson Stand
Thursday, 10th Nov 2022 22:15

Town have introduced specific turnstiles for the lower and upper tiers of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand ahead of Saturday’s home game against Cheltenham.

The club say the change will mean fans will enter the stand more quickly and efficiently with access to bar facilities and toilets also improving, while splitting fans across the upper and lower concourses will create more space.

Supporters with tickets in the upper tier will now not have access to the lower concourse other than when they leave the stadium or in case of emergency.

Fans with upper tier tickets will enter the ground via turnstiles 30-37 with stewards positioned to direct and provide assistance. Supporters will leave the stadium as previously.

Goodbye turnstile 34, my old friend.
Another personal football tradition gone....!

This has been in mainly because fans have been buying tickets for the upper tier when the lower tier has sold out and then squeezing in next to their mates in the lower tier.

Matty81
Only a knob would buy a more expensive ticket with a better view and then go sit next to there mates in the cheaper lower stand! You would just buy a cheaper lower tier ticket surely?
I don't think your right

@churchmans Lower tier is generally sold out, a lot of younger generation, new fans and hardcore old school enjoy the atmosphere ,comradery and game from their.
I guess its each to their own but seeing the pre game atmosphere in sir bobby lower would only want a younger me want to join in in the stands too.

Maybe give it a go

Sorry Churchmans, but matty81 is spot on, and have discussed this problem with the Club recently. Suspect there are other measures being put in place to ensure people stick to their allocated seat that will not make TWTD headlines too.

@churchmans - have you ever tried to buy a lower tier ticket in the Bobby Robson stand ???? There aren't any !
This will also stop people from socialising with their friends in the bars before the game or at half time, which I don't suspect the club has bothered to think about either. That will lead to them drinking somewhere else (lost revenue) and then turning up last minute, making the queues worse rather than better.
Where was the consultation on this ITFC ???? So much for fan engagement !

@Churchmans. This has happened a few times to me, I turned up and people were in my son and my seats. Asked them to move and they just shuffled along to the next seats. Eventually the stewards asked them for their tickets and they were upper tier so got moved up top. It has happened a lot

Not sure about this. People who usually meet up who sit at different levels it seems will now not be able to either before the game or at half time. I am downstairs but use The 78 Bar and the 81 Bar on the upper tier but use the lift due to dodgy need. Will I now be denied access to places I have used since they were built.

The standard should have been designed this way in the 1st place. Dont know of any other ground that doesnt have separate turnstiles for the upper and lower tiers. Some fans will moan about anything. Moan about the poor service at the bars. Then when this is done, which will help that, still moan. Also do agree, as others have said, that fans who should be in the upper tier, but decide to stand with their mates in the lower, are also part of the reason for this happening now. Do those fans not realise that the club could lose their safety certificate bcse of them, especially should there be some incident due to the lower tier being over occupied? May be unlikely but u never know. This would nevertheless been an issue with fans tho, had the stand been designed as it should have been.

Whilst I am sure there were concerns over seating arrangements for SBR, to implement this new plan without exploring other options so quickly in my opinion was not the smartest move they have made thus far. In our own group we are 50/50 split between the two levels. We always go in SBR pre — game (to avoid fanzone queues and lack of seats) and will have a drink together. At halftime we always meet in the bar upstairs (the only bar to actually sit and have a drink in the whole stand).
Now we cant and that is a massive part of our game time experience, particularly as we live near Cambridge and our friends splitting their lives between Amsterdam and Norfolk, and my son travels from Welwyn.

The problem is mainly downstairs for fans swapping around. Two things could have helped this
Stewards actually checking tickets and being proactive (most of the time they spend their time standing in the same place). Anyone caught without a ticket/in the wrong place should be ejected from the game. Caught twice season ban, three times lifetime
Fans could also help to call out rogue seat swappers too

Uefa1981. Get ur point but think Banning fans would he taking things a bit too far. We want fans in the ground, not stopped from going. Fact is, if the stand had been designed this way ( separate turnstiles for each level),in the 1st place, thered be no debate to be had. The new ownership, club management are simply putting in place how it should be. Perhaps they could have given more notice of it happenening, maybe left it for this season, but guess they feel it needs to done ASAP. After all, the club could get in trouble if something was to happen, with fans who should be upstairs, basically making the lower tier overcrowded. As unlikely as it is, if it was seen that that was happening, tgr club could lose their safety certificate. Has never been an issue up until recently bcse TBD crowds werent as they are now. Was always spare seats around. Unlike now.
