Davis: So Frustrating But I Don't Think We'd Do Anything Different
Sunday, 13th Nov 2022 09:38 by Blair Ferguson

Kieran McKenna's side left the Portman Road pitch frustrated after yesterday's 1-1 draw with Cheltenham despite dominating throughout, but Leif Davis says that in the same circumstances the Blues wouldn't do anything different.

Twenty-nine shots and 74 per cent possession tell the tale of Town's display against the Robins.

Everything looked on track for a win after an early eighth-minute goal from Luke Woolfenden, but Ryan Broom levelled in the 34th minute with Cheltenham's only shot on target. From there, the Blues were unable to find a way through the massed ranks of the Robins’ defence.

With Plymouth drawing 1-1 away to Lincoln, it was an opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders missed.

Town appeared to do everything they could to grab a victory and Davis says all that was missing from the performance was goals, but he believes they will come if the same approach is taken in future matches.

“I think we've done everything we can today to try and score again,” he explained. “The chances created were massive, it's just the way they defended was really good, throwing their bodies on the line.

“I think we started very, very good today. They didn't really do anything in the first 20 or 30 minutes, we were just suffocating them in the backline and every time they tried to play it long to get them back up the pitch, but it would just come straight back.

“It's just one of them where we've just got to be creating the chances and moving the ball around. It'll definitely come for us.

“I think we just need to keep working in training to try and score more goals, but it will come. I think we'll absolutely batter a team soon with the way we play.

“[It’s] very frustrating, so frustrating. We had 28 attempts on goal, we've got to put more to bed. They've had three and scored one, and it's just one of those days where we couldn't score.

“We scored one and we scored a good goal, but we've got to take more chances in front of goal.

“We started well and then just a little defensive mistake cost the goal. We've got to be switched on and not let that happen.

“But we started very well and the manager said that's probably the best he's seen the boys play since he's been here, and we felt good on the pitch, with the ball, without the ball and getting the ball back.

“Then just keeping them in their half. I don't think they got out of their half really in the second half. We've got to keep going, working on the training ground to keep pushing on to get better.”

When asked if he would have done anything differently if the game were to be played again, Davis continued: “To be fair, I don't think we'd do anything different. Like the manager said, it's probably the best we've played since he's been here. It's just one of those days in football where the chances that we created didn't go in.

“From my view, one of them should have been a penalty with the handball, but it's the ref's decision at the end of the day and we can't do anything about it.

“I was just trying to put as many balls into the box as I could because Freddie [Ladapo] is a big lad. Then when Cam [Burgess] came on as well, he loves heading the ball, so I was trying to put them in there for those two.

“But their defence was strong today. They were getting in front of everything and with shots, they were blocking everything. The keeper did well and saved some good chances from us. But, like I say, we've got to put more away with 28 shots.”

The 22-year-old says he and his teammates will analyse the game, looking at both the positives and negatives from the performance.

“Personally I’ll go away maybe tomorrow and watch the game back,” he said. “I’ll look at things that I need to improve on and things that I’m doing well and definitely things I need to work on.

“We’ll do that in video during the week and we’ve got to get those things put right.”

Injuries have begun to hamper Town in recent times with Dominic Ball and Tyreece John-Jules joining the list of those unavailable. Earlier in the season, manager Kieran McKenna was able to make five often game-changing substitutions, but Davis insists that whilst losing John-Jules and Ball is a blow, the players available are more than capable of making an impact.

"Obviously, I'm gutted for those two [John-Jules and Ball]. They are both a massive part of the team. Dom plays his part and he's just been unfortunate with a few injuries this year, and both of them are massive players for us when they come off the bench or when they start games.

"Tyreece as well is an unbelievable player. I think we probably missed him today in that final third because, no doubt, he'd probably have come on and grabbed a goal. But hopefully they'll both come back stronger and I'm absolutely gutted for them."

Continuing on the options from the bench against earlier in the season, Davis continued: “It does [make a difference], but the players that have come on do their job as well.

“Everyone is a very good player in the team, even on the bench, we're all as strong as each other and that's why they are at the club.

“Everyone gives it all their all when they come on the pitch. Kyle [Edwards] played really well when he came on today as well and it's going to be good to have people back like Greg [Leigh] and maybe others coming back soon. It'll be good to have them back and around the team.”

Just disappointing that they successfully defend everything thrown at them, yet we can't prevent their only shot on target

Fair enough ! – but patience wears thin and doesn't put points on the board .
Any analysis needs to be really brutal in confidence obviously , but intuition , variety of positioning and a much much more intelligent coordination of efforts in the opposition box need addressing .
Why are balls not finding men , or ARE the men not finding balls ; and where's the instinctive reaction and confidence to execute ?
LD speaks of FL being a big man ,but he appears to disappear amongst many ( though working hard ) and we have NO aerial threat and big physical presence - almost anywhere .
KM will be totally keyed in and aware and training will for sure be as enthusiastic and technically oriented as ever .
We've done so much to date , but so much remains to be done .

I hope you would do something different and that's hit the target!...some of those misses yesterday from Harness (though clearly over the line), Woolfie etc. were poor

The inability to finish these poor teams off will cost us at the end of the season. We will have to beat the likes of Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday at home. Expect a striker to be signed on loan in the January transfer window.

To many 'just one of those days' lately, I had high hopes at the back end of last season, haven't seen many convincing displays like that from then, our defence is becoming a problem and Walton is deffinatly loosing form, our number tens are blowing hot air nothing else tough ask to go up unless these issues are sorted fast, I live in hope, wednesday waiting for us to slip and it's happening, hopefully Plymouths small squad will catch up with them I won't hold my breath,

My opinion is woolfie and ladapo should have scored if they went for it. It felt imo that they were afraid to get a belt. This is a problem in our own box as well. Here is why burgess if fit has to play. He puts his body on the line in both boxes. I like woolfie and edmundson but they need to grow a pair and make opposing teams scared of our physical ity. This is what i think is wrong with our team and dont get me wrong we are a good side but we need to up THE WILL TO WIN. Look at how poor Cheltenham were but the gave everything for a point and got it. We need the same will to wiin

I think people's reactions to this are understandable but I was at Charlton 2 weeks ago and the failure to win that game was far worse than what we saw yesterday. To get a decent game of football both sides really need to want to play, it was obvious from very early yesterday that Cheltenham didnt.
But we are still only 18 games in and 28 to go, there are always going to be disappointments, look at how Man City must be feeling today, that's the game.
For the rest of the season our supporters are going to be absolutely key. The numbers and voice we get home and away will far outstrip Plymouth, at home we will get more than Wednesday and both those clubs have to come to Portman Road.
Its very easy to lose perspective here, getting Adhame and Leigh back soon, Aluko and Evans by Xmas and the opportunity to strengthen again in January will all be factors that should help our chances of a spot in the top two. Keep the faith people, Plymouth Portsmouth and Peterborough all failed to win yesterday, its not anybody's God given right....

Again we've had loads of corners but failed to score more than 1 goal. This is not the first match but any means where we've had a significant number of corners but not got a reasonable return from these great chances.
We need to get in an additional coach who can teach the full team on how to score from a corner....

Isn't doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results the definition of insanity?

I totally agree with Bazza. I'm still traumatised by that crazy few minutes at The Valley. Charlton played football and wanted to win but Cheltenham did neither. If we cut out the individual and team errors, perhaps change tactics against teams that park the bus we will squeeze goals through 22 legs. The future is still bright.

Let's not forget that a trip to PR is a cup final for most teams in this league. They're going to raise their game every time we play them. Most won't see a 25,000 crowd in their career and will rise to the occasion. Whilst disappointing to drop two points, only Plymouth have scored (one) more than us all year and we're still averaging more than 2 points per game. Still progress on last year when Sheff W and Plymouth both got 80+ points and we were stuck in 11th. Keep with the boys and this can be our year. COYB
