McKenna: Burns Has a Unique Role For Us
Thursday, 19th Jan 2023 16:02

Wideman Wes Burns has doubled his goal tally for the season in the last five games but manager Kieran McKenna says the Welshman’s value to the team goes beyond regularly finding the net.

Burns, last year’s Town top scorer with 13 goals, has now hit six this season and has bagged two in his last two matches.

“Wes knows that it’s his all-around contribution that we always value,” McKenna said. “Of course, goals are the most important thing in the game and he can chip in with goals, and that is really vital to the team.

“But it’s all aspects of his role. He has a real unique role for us in an attacking and defensive sense.

“He’s a really important player for us and he’s constantly working to improve and keep his high standards in terms of his all-round performance.

“And we keep working on that and we always say to him if you keep getting in the right areas and doing the right things, then the goals will come for him because he is a good finisher.

“Nice for him to chip in with a couple of goals but more important, or also very important, is his contribution for us on and off the ball and keeping them at a really high level.”

As well as scoring our goal he blocked a goal-bound shot in the first half against Plymouth. McK mentions this defensive side of his team role, it is obviously something that has been worked upon.
Keep it up Wes!

I agree with USA, his crossing used to be so good, there were a coulpe of first half ones last week which disappointed us all in a match we struggled to dominate against that very effective 5 man press.
What he is good at though is getting in behind, long may that continue.
What I'd like to see a bit more of though is using Sone and doubling up down that right hand side with SA ten yards in but playing in tandem . First half against Lincoln away we absolutely ripped them apart in that channel, its something we could use again

So Bazza you want to drop Chaplin our top scorer and replace him with Aluko who has hardly any goals or assists over the last 2 seasons. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

He's worth his place even without the goals due to excellent all round game. Probably his one weakness is his crossing or final ball into the box. Finding space much harder to come by this season, teams are marking him much closer.

Linkboy13 - thfinka ball is CRUCIAL , for all the previous good work counts for absolutely nothing if you cannot complete the job !
Tis my opinion that WB has indeed lost some of his effectiveness in this regard ,AND sometimes looks a bit muscle- bound and not moving quite as freely ! It may be the whole secret is in the confidence conundrum and it looks as if KM is using the opportunity to boost WB and tease out even more : it's down to yhe player , who is obviuisky trying hard to contribute in all ways possible !

I think I would have him crossing towards the left hand number ten slot at the back of the box. Over hit it and Davis is there, under hit it and Ladapo can have a go. We definitely need to get it into the box earlier whoever's on the ball.
