Town Confirm Scarlett Loan Signing
Thursday, 31st Aug 2023 15:06

Town have confirmed the signing of Dane Scarlett on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

TWTD revealed in March that Scarlett was among the players the Blues had been keen on in the January transfer window and the move comes as little surprise.

In October last year, following Town's 3-2 victory over Scarlett's previous loan club Portsmouth, Blues boss Kieran McKenna revealed how highly he rated the 19-year-old.

“One of the only players they have who doesn’t have Championship experience is one of the best young strikers in world football, in my opinion, in Dane Scarlett,” he said.

Although not on target in that game, Scarlett, who has also signed a new four-year deal with Spurs, scored at Portman Road in Pompey's 2-0 victory over the Blues in the Papa Johns Trophy in November.

“I’m really excited to get started here,” Scarlett told TownTV. “I found out I was officially moving yesterday but the move has been in the works for a few weeks.

“I remember playing against Ipswich last season and it was a good game. I liked the way the team played so I’m really looking forward to being part of that.“

McKenna, who has been aware of Scarlett since his time coaching at Tottenham’s academy, added: “Dane is a very exciting young forward who the staff and I have known about for a long time.

“He is an explosive finisher with both feet and someone who has good movement in the final third. He is also someone who works very well for the team out of possession.

“Dane is ready for his second loan spell having gained a year’s worth of experience with Portsmouth last season, and we feel that puts him in a good position to step up to this level and be an important member of the squad. We’re excited to have him here.”

Scarlett spent last season on loan at Fratton Park, scoring six goals in 24 starts and 16 sub appearances.

For his parent club, the 5ft 11in tall frontman has made three senior starts - all in the Europa Conference League - and seven sub appearances, two in the Premier League without finding the net.

Hillingdon-born Scarlett has won England caps at U15, U16, U19 and U20 levels and in 2022 was a member of the squad which won the UEFA European U19 Championship.

Scarlett, who will wear the number 24 shirt while with the Blues, is Town's sixth signing of the summer.

I've been saying we should get a young, quick premier league striker on loan to offer us something different to hirst and ladapo so I'm happy with this. Didnt score as much as expected last season in league one (4 goals) so thats a bit worrying but I feel mckenna can get more out of him than pompey could with that PE teacher cowley and the other bloke.

If we make him our leader we can call him Captain Scarlet. I’ll get my coat!

Excellent news, strength in depth is now required at the back.

Some people in the previous story are disappointed we have not gone for an experienced, proven striker. But is there realistically a 20-goal-a-season striker out there, and if there is, is he likely to be available in a highly competitive market? So we go down the route of what seems to be a very promising young player instead. That's the reality of our current situation, and it makes sense. Welcome, Dane. I think you will do well at PR!

Good move for the player and for us. 4 strikers all with different styles. With the bench expansion it gives McKenna lots of flexibility and options depending on the game situation. As I said earlier, he will leave us a better player and that is why we can get lads like this in from the big prem clubs.

Let us hope he provides the answer, not sure he will at his age - but we’ll see !
Just a Reminder that we are not just in the Championship, where it is essential we at least STAY - but we have the Battle of the A140 to Win now by finishing above them …. !!!
And they are proving STRONG, and strengthening even more so, with their chase on for ready made Experience !!
We’ll see - who comes out the better !!

Welcome Dane, have to say was hoping for someone with more championship experience which i feel is lacking in our forward line but hey ho trust in Mckenna n Ashton. Still a day to go, maybe more to come perhaps.

Given how highly Kieran rates him, this has a high probability of being a great signing. Well done all involved for getting him in and all the best Dane - look forward to seeing the best of you.

I know I’m going to get some (a lot) of negative feedback from this comment but I have to be true to myself. I really don’t understand this signing, I’ve been crying out for us to get another striker in the building but someone who is proven are championship level. Jackson and Ladapo are certainly not at championship level (even though they try their best) soo on my opinion we are no further forward in strengthening the striking department.

I'm pleased about this.
He will be even better by the time McK has worked on him.
Scarlett and Hirst could form one of those dynamic pairs that began at our club with Crawford and Phillips.
Dane, you are very welcome

Well this will please those that wanted us us to scour the European market for players. We have signed a Dane

I liked the look of Scarlett last year, good movement & good finishing, so I'm happy with this signing & feel he is certainly well able for Championship football. If Simms is worth £8m & Cannon is spoken of in similar terms, I think we are doing well getting Scarlett on board.
I like having a quality finisher among our strikers/centre forwards, because Jackson & Ladapo often need a few chances before they score, & even Hirst, despite scoring some crackers, is not exactly a prolific finisher; his overall quality in how he wins possession, holds up play & links with those around him, is where his real strength is. Arguably, the 3 we play behind the centre forward are our best finishers.
It's good to have different qualities in our 4 strikers, when we need to change it up, but I wonder is our business finished in that area. Clearly we have a preferred style/formation with Hirst up front as a focal point, but we don't have a replacement who will do that job, were he to get injured; as I say, it is a different style of play without him. I wonder might KMcK have someone else in mind to come in yet, even if it might see one going out?

He looks to have a lot of potential but the question is will he get enough game time in the league to realise that potential with us? With Hirst fit, he will probably be coming on as a sub like Freddie.

We haven't had a great Dane since Thomas Gaardsöe. An exciting player with bags of potential. If the boss thinks highly of him that is good enough for me.

Good signing, but three loans is too many in my opinion. Our success during KM and Gamechanger has been the permanent additions, topped up by one or two loans. Hopefully any further signings won’t be loanees.

I trust in mckenna but we are back to improving players we have to give back , unless there is a buy clause put in , im not in this we need a 20 goal a season man we have them in chaplin lladapo last season and i think hirst will be , but condidering all the talk is spending to go up yet we now have three loans , i think tgey couod be good for us , but yiu never know with youngsters , still in mckenna we trust i still feel there is s big signing out there to come at the back for us cmon kieran

Totally happy with this signing. Too bad that he's cup tied in the EFL cup, but hopefully he will see some game time in the league.

Agree with Jas - 3 loans in (maybe too many) and all youngsters all awaiting the litmus test at this level. All the best Dane while your here!
