McCarthy: McKenna's Doing a Remarkable Job
Thursday, 5th Oct 2023 14:28

Former Town boss Mick McCarthy says current manager Kieran McKenna is doing a remarkable job at Portman Road.

McCarthy, 64, who was in charge of the Blues between 2012 and 2018, has been hugely impressed by McKenna, who took over at Portman Road just over three years after his departure.

“An amazing job he’s done,” McCarthy told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. “From getting them promoted and now to seven wins in the Championship, remarkable.

“They came back from 2-0 down against Wolves to win, they were 1-0 down on Saturday against Huddersfield and came back to get a draw.

“Plays great football, they’re flying under him. They’ve got a really good budget in League One, they’ve got it in the Championship, but nevertheless, he’s doing the coaching, he’s doing the managing. Remarkable.”

You only have to go back to Tuesday night to realise how far we have come, my hearing is not what it was but Hull’s fans I’m sure we’re chanting ‘we’ve got the ball, we’ve got the ball’ harp back to MM time and that was us and Hull are in no way turning out the tripe we did when he was in charge. No shots on goal, no motivation in the team, his forays into management ship haven’t lasted very long since he left and that speaks volumes. I supported him for far too long believing he would turn it around I’m sorry to say.
I’ve seen fans nod off in their seat in MM time, I don’t think that’s going to happen again anytime soon.

Agreed The voice of reason. I suspect that although Evans was parsimonious with the budget for players he wasn't with what he paid the manager. McCarthy was Evans's man and did what Evans paid him to do, keep us afloat in the second division and attendances etc. did not matter.

‘People keep going on about the budget McKenna has got, at present we have the 17th highest wage level & 14th highest transfer expenditure in the championship. When MM was here there were clubs finishing higher than us on a lower budget, but please don't let facts stand in the way!!’

They aren’t facts.

There’s no way we’re 17/24 for wages. And we have one of the biggest budgets available for transfers if needed.

The answer he gave to the question about ten Hag at around 17:30 in raised a wry smile.

Didn't Mick say at one point "Be careful what you wish for...." I'm glad I wished for attacking, entertaining football at Portman road. :)

I can only shudder at the thought of the McCarthy era, now.

It might’ve been Evans that oversaw the decimation of the club, and McCarthy might’ve initially overseen a small rise in fortune - but only at the enormous cost of our brand of football and in the process, clearing out half of the stadium, further decimating revenues.

He was quick to gloat at our struggles after he left. He’s been slow to acknowledge our uptick now but he’s right to do so and the quantum leap in football and skill between himself and McKenna is indeed remarkable.

Mick ultimately didn’t avoid us relegation. He accidentally kept the torture going, in my view made it worse because the football was absolutely unbearable and unwatchable, until it eventually happened anyway to a club which by then had a totally disillusioned fan base to whom he behaved quite belligerently at the end for not being grateful enough for his gruel. He played a big part in the rift between team and fans that has taken years to fix.

Anyway. All history now. Thank god.

McCarthy was the epitome of anti football at every club he managed whatever his budget and it was the same at Town. His whole attitude stunk and after telling supporters to F Off at Norwich there was no way back. I have supported the club for nearly 50 years and never known it so toxic so I take great delight in being where we are now and seeing kids wearing Town colours again rather than some remote PL team McCarthy can keep his opinion to himself because I don't care what he thinks and would prefer he was airbrushed from our history.

Cannot find the transfer list data again, but we only paid £3.50 million in fees compared with others spending double that on a single player.

Budget, playing style whatever. The one thing Mick we have now is a bit of class on and off the field that comes at no cost.
Can’t think what the current regime and manger would think of mouthing fcuk off to the supporters!

That Mr McCarthy is exactly what I wished for. :)

What ended any affection for MM for me was the start of the 2017-18 season where we won 4 or 5 with aggresive football, playing Garner, Waghorn, Dids and Celina, then we got spanked at Reading, so suddenly reverted back to bilgeball.

My great managers list would include Ramsey, Robson, Burley, Royle, and McKenna. Mr McCarthy would certainly not feature, although he was not the worst we have had. We all know who that was!

he's right of course. MM also did a remarkable job keeping us in the
Champ for so long with zero support.

Met Mick down at the training ground he came over and had a conversation with me and my disabled friend and was charming and funny. Took a lot of insults from fans but unfortunately there's morons at every club so i don't blame him for giving it back i would have done the same.

For all the comments about money, MM does say "he’s doing the coaching, he’s doing the managing. Remarkable.”
The budget comments are irritating though, especially when most of it is being invested by MA on infrastructure. Getting a new pitch, stadium improvements etc etc don't get you points, it's the way you play. MM has set up every team he ever managed as dour and hard to beat. KM sets his up to entertain and be hard to beat.
Thats the very reason McKenna will be remembered here forever as giving us hope again and Mick as just another overpaid custodian in a dreadful period.

Yes, Mick was a dinosaur, mostly serving up one dimensional hoofball. However, a little bit of generosity. He did transform Daryl Murphy into a decent striker, who showed up well for the ROI at the Euros & Ill always remember that 5-2 win at Rotherham. so thanks Mick but a much bigger thanks to KMc for what he is doing now.

Some passionate comments on here as always.
For me Burleysglorydays and Linkboy, whilst different, just about said it all for me.
A proud Yorkshireman with integrity, but glad to see him go when he did as it was the beginning of the end of a toxic time.

Mick was fantastic at replacing his best players for a fraction of what they were sold for. Do I rate McKenna higher, yes, but I think MM did a great job. We never struggled and looked doomed, mostly the playoffs were in reach until March of each season with a side mainly made up of free transfers and loans. The treatment he got from some fans was shameful.

McCarthy did a very decent job when here. No budget (Keane had spent that) and an owner who was already losing interest in us. Marcus ploughed a lot of his own money into this club, but held on for a little bit to long. Glad he did now, as we wouldn't have what we have. Thanks Mick for all your hard work and patience, but we are in a much better place now and looking up rather than down. Enjoy your retirement.
