Skipper Morsy Handed One-Match Ban
Wednesday, 27th Dec 2023 17:04

Town skipper Sam Morsy will miss Friday’s home game against QPR having been handed a one-game ban for a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following the 2-0 win away against his old club Middlesbrough earlier this month.

An FA statement reads: “Sam Morsy has been suspended for one match and fined £5,000 for a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Ipswich Town’s EFL Championship fixture against Middlesbrough on Saturday 9th December.

“The Ipswich Town midfielder admitted that he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official in or around the changing rooms, following the completion of the fixture. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing.”

A Town statement reads: “Sam accepts the charge, and both the club and the midfielder will make no further comment.”

While the incident relating to the ban is not explained, Morsy was shown his ninth yellow card of the season in injury time by referee Dean Whitestone, a decision with which he later expressed his annoyance.

Speaking just over a week later, the Egyptian international said: “I think the Middlesbrough one, I was really disappointed, just because there was a foul, the ball’s come to me and I passed to Freddie [Ladapo] and as I passed it he [the referee] blew the whistle, so with 30 seconds left, 2-0 up, in their half, the last thing any player would do is try to kick the ball away.”

The Blues captain remains on nine bookings with a 10th leading to a two-match ban.

The only red card we got one whole season under Mick was Cresswell.in the tunnel for berating the ref.after a particularly feisty Sky game I seem to remember. Birmingham or Barnsley possibly?

Was it my imagination or did Sam mention Palestine in his post match interview on Sky? Maybe I misheard... for some reason the tin foil hat wearing side of my brain wonders if this is connected to this ridiculous and late suspension for something which seems irrelevant now.. maybe the FA are as competent as their name suggests and that is all...

these enforced rests for him are great for the team over a long season...

I think it's Morsy's firecracker attitude that makes him the player he is today. To expect his levels of commitment and will to win, is likely to cost him a ban once a season. I think it's worth it. No doubt he's under pressure to keep his head from every coach he's ever had, but Sam is... Sam.

fully agree number8. Players can be carded after the game finishes. Unless things have changed since my involvement with local football clubs, the referee is in charge until he leaves the ground.
I have seen a player being sent off in a bar after a game in the Anglian Combination league a few years back.

I lost faith in the FA and EFL a long time ago. Both institutions are stuffed full of people who do not read the game as it should be today. Too many suits making a lot of money from the game who are not accountable to anyone.

Vandusen. Ur right about Cresswell, but it was on the pitch. He approached Andy durso and abused him. Ref got red card out immediately.

I've just watched the first 90 seconds of the Boro game back again and Morsy catches their No 10 with studs up - a clear yellow IMO. Good job the ref was lenient. And there were other fouls in the game. Sam shows that he can control himself when he wants/needs to - might I humbly suggest that he tries to do this all the time and is therefore not constantly on the brink of a ban? We have a sports-psych on the payroll don't we?
