Rooney: Fulham Have Window in Which to Recall Stansfield
Saturday, 30th Dec 2023 11:45

Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney has confirmed that parent club Fulham can recall Blues target Jay Stansfield during the January transfer window, but is hopeful that the 21-year-old will remain at St Andrew’s for the rest of the season.

As previously reported, Stansfield is a player who manager Kieran McKenna has eyed for a number of transfer windows - Town initially showed interest in the summer of 2022 - and he is well up the Blues’ list of January potential recruits with adding strikers a priority, even more so since George Hirst suffered a hamstring injury.

A move to the Blues would require the Cottagers to recall Stansfield, who is also said to be interesting Sunderland, from his loan spell at Birmingham where he has scored seven times - including one in the 2-2 draw with Town - since joining them in August.

“Jay has been great for us,” Rooney told the Birmingham Mail. “He’s an important player for us. Of course he’s a Fulham player and he’s gained great experience here, and he will continue to do that.

“Ultimately, we have been in touch with Fulham. As far as we’re aware, he will be with us. Fulham have a window where they can pull him back. If that’s what they do then it’s out of our control.”

Quizzed on when that period might be, the former England skipper added: “I’m not too sure off the top of my head. It’s a small window.

“I would imagine Fulham can only be delighted with the goals he’s scored here and the experience he’s getting. He’s getting a lot of minutes so we’re really hopeful that continues.”

The striker signed a new contract at Craven Cottage which runs to the summer of 2027 in the summer with the Premier League side having an option for a further year.

Meanwhile, Town sources have played down loan links with 21-year-old Manchester United forward Amad Diallo.

Id really like to see this one done, and done quickly. The young lad Buabo looked so good an his few minutes last night, it just shows how out of touch Jackson and particularly Ledapo are as target men. We need at least 2 in there, plus a ten, so expect this window to be busy and hopefully quick

Can we infer that Portman Road sources have not played down links on this one?
Good against us at St Andrews- can he also play as a number 10 ?
We obviously need someone into the team ASAP, it would probably give us a great lift to get him playing vs Sunderland, lets hope its close although if someone comes in with an Ellis Sims type offer we might have to take aim somewhere else.

The very fact Rooney is talking about this player snd what Fulham can do makes me think the player is our target. Fingers crossed

I’d also love to see our young striker who came on at the end last night be given a go at some point on Monday v Stoke. To show my ignorance of our youngsters, I’ve never heard of him. He was a breath of fresh air up too last night.

@Arniem Agree about Buabo but according to KMcK last night he is injured as well so won't be contributing much which is a shame. Would like to see Stansfield in ASAP but we will only hear about it once it's done.
Not sure about Diallo as he has been injured and not played so that looks a risk which I am not sure this management team would go for.

Dab: we’re not having a lot of luck with injuries right now are we. Also think you’re right to some extent re Diallo, but I think the club are looking at multiple goals ( short and long). We clearly need strikers / defenders for now , that can hit the ground running in January . But we would also be looking to gather up quality players that may be out injured now but once rehabbed and nurtured back to full fitness would be a stunning acquisition for the further ( preparing for life in the PL). Players such as Axel and potentially Diallo would potentially fit that profile. So to get players in who are just coming back from injury is both a risk but potentially very smart, because they be cheaper .

Diallo played for UTD last night, so I can't imagine they will be letting him go out.

How much would Stansfield cost? Seen estimates ranging from 1.5 to 5 million. Hirst cost 1.5 in League 1, so would assume Stansfield would be more than that now. How high would the owners be prepared to go? Also seen talk of a loan deal and an option to transfer if ITFC are promoted. That could easily doubled any eventual fee. Top end Championship / low end Premier League transfers are often 10 - 15 million plus. But as Norwich proved if you do not pay you come straight down.
