Charlton Hoping to Complete Ladapo Signing Today
Friday, 19th Jan 2024 10:19

Charlton Athletic are hoping to complete the loan signing of Town striker Freddie Ladapo later today, TWTD understands.

The 30-year-old’s departure during this window has been widely expected with his opportunities having been limited since the Blues were promoted to the Championship, even since George Hirst suffered the hamstring injury which is set to rule him out for most of the rest of the season.

We understand discussions regarding the switch have been ongoing for more than a week and are now reaching their conclusion with the player set to undergo a medical today.

Ladapo joined the Blues after leaving Rotherham in the summer of 2022 and has scored 25 goals in 33 starts and 42 sub appearances. He has another year left on his contract.

The Romford-born forward’s younger brother Tolu is already a player at the Valley.

Ladapo’s impending exit may mean the Blues are closing in on the addition of another striker.

Town have been in talks with AFC Bournemouth regarding former striker Kieffer Moore returning to Portman Road on loan, while a move for Blackburn’s Sam Gallagher stalled earlier in the week with Rovers concerned that his exit would leave them short of frontmen.

That situation could have changed with reports that the Lancastrians are targeting Birmingham City striker Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Gallagher is understood to be keen on the move to the Blues, while Stoke City and Sunderland are also believed to have shown interest during this window.

Elsewhere, former Town forward Armando Dobra has signed a contract extension with National League leaders Chesterfield, who are managed by ex-Blues boss Paul Cook and coached by former former Blues Kieron Dyer and Gary Roberts.

Dobra, 22, who was interesting Oxford and Charlton, is now set to stay with the Derbyshire club until 2026.

His scoring record is much better than I realised and includes a lot of important goals. He is a good centre forward at league 1 level and I'm sure he will score goals for Charlton. I hope he does well there so that we can get a decent fee for him in the summer window. Unfortunately his all round game is not good enough for the Championship so he would be well down the pecking order here. Hopefully two new centre forward signings to be revealed soon.

Sorry to see you go, Freddie and thanks for some very important contributions to our promotion season as well one or two this season. Hopefully now you will get more game time as your efforts certainly deserve to

Some keep going on about him not being good enough for the championship. Yet he scored double figures in a struggling rotherham team, in this lge. Think it's more a case of him being more suited to a team playing 2 up front. And to getting more game time than he's had this season. His confidence is clearly low, as,can be seen by the way he's snatched at chances coming his way, or wanting that extra touch before getting his shot off. Despite ehat some have said, I've no doubt whatsoever that heszalways given his all. So good luck to him at Charlton. Hope he smashes it there.

Apparently he's not good enough for the championship but Jackson is !! This move will strengthen the view that there are many many better strikers in league1 that we now have left at the club. We definitely need better technical quality from our front man, and we aren't going to see that improved with either of those currently linked. For the first time in over a year I'm slightly perplexed by the current thinking.

I can't help but feel sad about this move. I really wanted him to succeed and it embarrassed me to be a supporter of a club where people boo their own players just because they don't think they are good enough. He might have done a bit better if he had proper support. Even so, he's not Premier League standard and not top of the Championship standard.

He will do well at Charlton, and I am really pleased he has got the opportunity. A key part of our promotion squad, his goalscoring record is excellent. He could boss League One for a few years yet.

Many thanks Freddie for your whole hearted displays in a Town shirt you were subjected(in the stadium and on twtd) to at times disgraceful comments which were not deserved yet you always gave your utmost in every game when at times you must have thought should i bother giving morons the pleasure of beating me with their sticks!!,
Go and be a success big boy you were a credit to our club and the true supporters who know a bit about football and not cowardly keyboard warriors.

Freddie is our goals per 90 minutes played leader for players with more than one goal this season, but clearly has lost some confidence, and the confidence of KMc also.

He’s gone but only on loan for rest of the season. I’m guessing to free up some wages for the new striker coming in.
