De Zerbi: Sarmiento Was Important For Ipswich
Saturday, 11th May 2024 17:34

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi says he has kept a close eye on Jeremy Sarmiento during his loan spell with the Blues.

The Ecuadorian international made a number of big contributions as Town secured promotion to the Premier League, not least the late goals against Southampton and Leicester.

In total, Sarmiento, 21, made six starts and 16 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring four goals.

“I followed him. I watched many games,” De Zerbi said. “He didn’t play so any games in the first XI but he was important for Ipswich. In West Bromwich [where he was on loan in the first half of the season] the same, I think.

“He needs to play in a different context. He can play number 10, he can play winger but he has to play a particular type of football.

“Ipswich and West Bromwich played in a good style. He can be important next season, but we have to analyse the squad, the new players, the players like Deniz Undav [who is on loan at VfB Stuttgart] if he comes back or not, I don’t know.”

At the time Sarmiento joined Town in January, it was reported in Ecuador that the deal could see the forward return to the Blues on loan in the summer. However, promotion to the Premier League means Town are only able to sign two loan players ahead of 2024/25.

Late goal at Leicester to earn a big point and who could forget the Southampton winner yes he played his part as all the others in the squad did . I agree he is of course trying to talk his price up .

We should do what we can to buy Sarmiento and Hutchinson. We know what both can do and fit in well with the squad.

If he turned all the shots he had into goals he'd be one hell of a player.

Mustn't let sentiment effect our decisions and im sure McKenna will do what's best for the club and sign the quality of players that's required to compete in the Premier league. As much as i luv Sarmiento he is no where near up to Premier league . I think we can learn alot from Burnley's experience in the Premier league that unless youve got top quality players of International standard you are not going to build from the back on a regular basis players are much quicker and stronger at a higher level. As much as it hurts fans they have to accept that players move on from time to time.

Many interesting points made above. I agree that we should try and buy Hutchinson and if we can get him at a reasonable price, Sarmiento also. Both are of a very good age with great potential to develop further under KMcK.
I would not be keen on wholesale changes as it is obviously a tight knit group and we need to be careful to not disrupt that in the way GB did with some of his expensive imports, Sereni and George come to mind.
Introducing say 4 proven Prem performers, a couple at the back, a midfielder and striker should be enough with money being held back for January. The great work ethic and team spirit is invaluable and we need to be careful not to disturb that with wholesale changes and then struggle for a couple of months while the team 'gels' as it will be critical to our survival that we get off to a great start.
In conclusion, I have full confidence in KMcK and MA to manage the resources, players and money, that will be available to them coyb........

The club probably have many options that are just as good or possibly better! We just don't know about them

Sarmiento has been excellent as an impact player but I’m not sure that he’d start many PL games albeit he’s a good Championship player. I agree with many that whilst it’s usually beneficial to have a settled team the step up contrary to some views is huge. Our starting eleven would finish rock bottom of the PL as we have very little pace in the middle or at the back and that’s why Leeds beat us twice.
Last years top three Championship sides have finished bottom three and we will be no different without several additions and thankfully KMK will be fully aware of that and will ensure that we have a competitive team. There is no room for sentiment . The big plus for me is our manager and the support he has from owners and CEO. Make no mistake this is a big step up in class and any mistakes are punished. Exciting times ahead imo.

It’s the two loans that concern me. They’re the ones that you hope will make the difference.
I’d sign JS, he’s only 21 and has great future. I expect Brighton to use any fees to strengthen their team so money from his sale would help. Just think what KMc could do with him given more time. Better maybe than taking a risk with new player.

I think the club will be setting the bar much higher in terms of player quality than what people are saying on here. We are hardly likely to sign a player who hardly featured in the championship no matter how popular he is with the fans. Hutchinson is the only one of the loan players that i would hold on to if given the chance. One area that needs to be improved significantly is the academy we are hardly producing players that we can get excited about.
