Villa Activate Philogene Matching Rights
Wednesday, 10th Jul 2024 11:15

Hull City winger Jaden Philogene’s former club Aston Villa are reported to have activated matching rights on the Blues target in the latest twist what’s turning into a transfer saga.

Town have agreed a double deal with the Tigers for Philogene and central defender Jacob Greaves understood to be worth between £35 and £40 million up front plus add-ons.

The Greaves deal is all but done but there continues to remain a question regarding the acquisition of Philogene, whose valuation is understood to be £18 million of the overall deal.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Villa, who sold the 22-year-old to Hull for £5 million a year ago, have now matched Town’s offer as is their right as per the deal they did last summer.

According to , that deal included a 30 per cent sell-on - which would reduce the fee should he return to Villa Park - and personal terms were pre-agreed.

If the Tigers now receive higher bids from Town or other clubs, Villa will then have to decide whether to remain in the race. Previously it was reported Villa, who had the option to match Philogene bids within 72 hours, accept that ultimately the decision will come down to the player.

Everton and Crystal Palace are also believed to still be keen, despite the move to Town having appeared to be the most likely option with their offer the only one previously having been accepted by the East Yorkshire side and with personal terms agreed.

Elsewhere, Football Insider reports that former England U21 international Philogene has told friends he wants to join Town, while neither Philogene nor Greaves have travelled to Turkey with the Hull City squad for a pre-season trip.

Philogene, who has two years left on his Hull contract with the club having an option for another season, joined Villa’s academy from the Pro:Direct Academy and spent spells on loan with Stoke and Cardiff City prior to making his £5 million switch to the MKM Stadium a year ago.

Cottingham-born Greaves, 23, the son of former Hull City and York City defender Mark Greaves, came through the ranks at his local club, spending time on loan with Cheltenham in 2019/20.

In 2023/24, his fourth campaign in the Tigers’ first team, he was was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Season and also carried off his club’s Player of the Year award. Everton and Tottenham have also been linked. Greaves is contracted to Hull until the summer of 2026 with the club having an option for a further year.

The central defender has had his medical at Town and has agreed a four-year contract with that deal awaiting the completion of the Philogene switch.

Meanwhile, Town are expected to complete the signing of Manchester City striker Liam Delap, 21, at some point today with the player believed to be due at the club for a medical.

As reported on Monday, Delap was at Portman Road last Thursday with a £15 million fee subsequently agreed with the Premier League champions plus a further £5 million in add-ons.

Former Town loanee Jeremy Sarmiento, 22, is being linked with a loan move to Scottish Premiership Aberdeen.

Not great business by Villa. Sell him for 5 million and buy him back 12 months later for 18 million!

ArnieM. When we signed Paul Mariner, ir was, simular. Not quite like this one, but us, west brom and west ham all in for him. Then west ham went out and just us and west brom. Fortunately he chose us. If this was the player messing us about, I'd agree with you about moving on. Bit there's no reason for us to do so. Dontcthink anything could happen before now bcse of this, thing with villa. Tho, like you, I thought they had to be in the same division

Everyone just needs to chill - there’s far too many ready to chuck it all in simply because the transfer isn’t done and dusted as quickly as they’d like. Just because Villa have activated the matching rights doesn’t mean he’s going there, and if reports are to believed, he’s keen to come and join us.

This is the hard world of Premier League business and finance. Clubs will do everything in their power to maximize revenue, and if we were in Villa’s shoes we’d be doing exactly the same. I can’t believe we’ve negotiated a deal worth £1m for Ahadme, and got £400k for El Miz - but nowadays we’ve obviously got people in the club who know what they’re doing.

For me, the proof of the pudding is whether the actual player wants to be here or not. If he does - it'll happen, if he doesn't - great, he can go elsewhere and we go for a player who wants the shirt.

Simple really. Calm down folk.

The same league clause thing seems real enough, spelled out here by Hull themselves.

Let the boy make his decision and go with it. None of this has come from the club, for all we know hes there today having a medical and all three will be announced today. MA delivers, nothing Ive read dampens my conviction that we wii get him

Not sure what the issue is from some supporters on here giving up so easily. Villa playing silly beggars and trying to rock our boat as new boys, that's all. Tactics we need to get used to. Doesn't change anything really, so if Philogene wants to come here he comes no matter what. Villa can cry & do nothing about it, activation or not.
He's unlikely to want to go back to Villa who sold him anyway & already expressed interest here over other clubs.
Just be grateful you're only a fan watching on all the speculation, and not ITFC staff having to deal with this silliness.

Would love Philogene to come here but he
seems so indecisive that maybe he's not for us.

I’m amazed at how many people on here have had chance to read the agreement documents between Villa and Hull and apparently know Hull have to be in the prem to activate this clause. I’m guessing the buy back clause is a set fee and perhaps that required Hull to be in the prem or perhaps not. This clause appears to be one where they can match any accepted bid. I’m humble enough however to acknowledge I wasn’t involved in the deal and so can’t state as fact any of these things.

I think we should put on a play… there are more than enough drama queens on here for the cast, and lots of people keen on writing fiction for the script.

I have a feeling the pantomime is now drawing to a close and we will have the final curtain fairly soon. Let's hope the audience is able to give it a standing ovation.

Wish some on here like ArnieM would chill out and stop believing everything they read. This forum doesn’t get any information from the club only news reports and sky sports who are more often than not wrong because they need to make more out of something than there actually is. Until things are done just don’t worry about it. But coming on moaning about this player or the agent is a waste of time as none of us know what’s happening same as when McKenna was linked to every job going.

BeattiesBackPocket : I don't believe a word of what yo0'uve just written!

PS if we cant believe an article posted by Phil Ham on here , then what, in your opinion, CAN we believe?

I don’t think he is indecisive, the way I understand it Villa have matching rights and had until today to activate, probably had to wait until the deadline passed, if he wants to come he will, we shall see very shortly. People need to chill on this !

Westy. The player isn't being indecisive. From all accounts he wants to comexhere. But nothing could happen until today bcse of this apparent clause in thr deal between hull and villa.

Monkeyblue. Click on the link on bluemike1s post. You'll clearly see that is the situation. Guess that doesn't actually prevent villa from making an offer tho.

Unfortunatly the clause has only been activated for one reason
everton and palace we could compete with, villa are a different propersition

The link above summising he wants a guaranteed place which villa may not like, may give some hope though and of course the KM magic.
