Town Among Clubs Eyeing England International Phillips
Monday, 12th Aug 2024 12:46

Town are among three Premier League clubs eyeing Manchester City’s England midfielder Kalvin Phillips ahead of the closure of the transfer window at the end of the month.

The 28-year-old has had a frustrating time since joining City for £45 million in the summer of 2022 from Leeds, making only two league starts and 14 sub appearances for the Premier League champions, then spending the second half of last season on loan at West Ham where he started only three top flight matches in addition to playing five games from the bench.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Blues, Everton and Fulham are all keen on recruiting the 31-times-capped England international this summer. We understand there is something in the reported Town interest.

Manchester City are ideally targeting a permanent sale with the Leeds-born schemer not in manager Pep Guardiola’s plans, although he has impressed in pre-season playing at centre-half, but it’s said they may be willing to agree a loan.

Town are yet to add to the midfield this summer but are almost certain to want to strengthen that area of the squad before the window closes.

Phillips would be an ambitious move even on loan and, as with other potential deals, the Blues might struggle to fight off the more established clubs also in the hunt for his signature.

Elsewhere, former Town academy youngster Ben Knight has left Manchester City to join Real Murcia on a permanent basis.

Knight, 22, left the Blues’ youth set-up to join City in 2018, veteran academy coach Bryan Klug having said he was the best youth player he had ever worked with.

The forward made one senior appearance for City, as a sub in the Community Shield at Wembley, while spending spells on loan at Crewe and Stockport.

If McKenna want's him and it's for the right price and he's going to fit in and work hard for the cause like the rest of the lads, then that's enough for me.
Yes he hasn't played much over the last couple of seasons, but when he was at Leeds he was pivotal to them. Was also an England regular, just needs to find his feet again. Quality is obviously there. Sign him up I say.

£150k a week he’s stealing a living lol personally I’d rather Skipp from Spurs or a young hungry player with ambition. It’s a no from me.

Beatties back pocket. I'm not being pedantic. Simply pointimgvojt 1 things. 1. His full wage wouldn't be 8-10 times whatcwexpaym 2. We wouldnt be paying his full wages. If he came on loan, at max we'd b paying 50 %, butcprobably less than that. So yes, we would be able to sign the other players we need.

Unlike Gareth Southgate I'm not a fan of Phillips and was surprised that City signed him. I'm not sure that he has the right mentality to fit in here and unless he's willing to take a massive pay cut he won't be a permanent signing. If he's able to convince Kieran that he has the humility and work ethic needed a loan could be possible, but only if City top up his wages.

Being linked to a 28 year old from the current champions of England with 33 caps to his name shows the ambition the club have.

Odobert just scored a lovely goal for Burnley great pace and cool finish. Maybe he thinks he's got a better future at Burnley and is not convinced we can avoid the drop and Burnley are returning to the Premier league.
