Blues Renew Philogene Interest
Thursday, 2nd Jan 2025 13:06

Town are again eyeing summer target Jaden Philogene as they look to strengthen during the January transfer window.

In July, the Blues had agreed a joint-deal with Hull City for forward Philogene and teammate Jacob Greaves with the Philogene side of the proposed move understood to be worth £18 million with the player understood to have agreed personal terms at Portman Road.

However, his former club Aston Villa had 72 hours within which to exercise matching rights as part of the deal they had agreed with the Tigers the previous summer, which they did and Philogene returned to Villa Park for £13 million - the Midlanders also taking advantage of their 30 per cent sell-on - with the forward signing a five-year contract.

But since then the England U21 international has made only three starts - two in the Premier League - and 11 sub appearances and Villa look set to allow him to move out during January, on loan rather than on a permanent basis with a number of clubs believed to be interested.

Sky Sports is reporting that the Blues remain keen on Philogene and are monitoring the situation and we understand that this is the case.

Another forward is an obvious Town target during January along with a central striker and probably a right-back.

Londoner Philogene initially joined Villa’s youth set-up from the Pro:Direct Academy and spent spells on loan with Stoke and Cardiff City prior to making his £5 million switch to Hull in the summer of 2023 when he was also interesting Town.

Meanwhile, reports of a move for Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath are understood to be speculation based on the Blues’ summer interest in the Ivorian.

blues1 - 0 assists and 0 goals, 3 yellows and 1 red card in 11 appearances, and yes I've seen him come as a sub on a couple of SKY games, he's struggled to get into games and looks lightweight. I'd keep clear but if McK is interested it's to fill the void of Ogbene.

There won’t be any players of greater quality available in January. Only Prem players who have been unsuccessful will be available. I think I am stating the obvious?

George Hirst made his decision to choose playimg at a higher level, for more money, than come here 2 1/2 years ago; 6 months later he arrived here anyway, because
1) it's hard to immediately establish yourself in a team that is flying high, where you are just another addition to a squad that is not exactly set up to play to your strengths
2) McKenna wanted him, for the type of player he is, & had targetted him as his #1 transfer priority with exactly the game/skills for how his attacking formation would work

I take on board the reservations other posters have, given his minutes for Villa, but it does remind me of the Hirst situation so much. McKenna really wanted him last Summer, & was prepared to match his offer for Omari to get him - and had all but gotten him - so there can be no doubt as to his suitability for playing in this team. Having lost out to Villa, McKenna then turned to Odobert, who ultimately went to Spurs in preference (and looks a great player, albeit injured atm), before then turning to Jack Clarke late on.
Clarke is a lovely footballer, and waa the other outstanding goalscoring left winger in the Championship last season, but he is a very different player to Philogene, and dare I said it, less suited to our game. I do think he has the quality to be a success in the Premier League, but our Manager, Chairman & the Ownership are not in the business of standing around & being sentimental, when a opportunity presents itself.
The right hand side might be the obvious area to bring in reinforcements, but we have to concede that the left wing position has been a problem all season, with Clarke not linking too well with Davis & weak in covering, while Szmodics & Broadhead are more left sided #10s, than being attacking wingers.
If McKenna wants him, I'm on board. A wanted player, who gets to play his game, in a side set up to encorage him to do so, is likely to flourish.

McK will decide whether he’s worth having and he knows best.

Mc Kenna puts his reputation on the line signing players, if he is interested then i for one trust his judgement , he has done a good job for Town so for imo .Being a keyboard manager is good fun but counts for nothing .

I think this is deliberate and benign false info from Town management or a massive kite flown by low level hacks. Too much fuss. We are looking for a right winger.

Fabrizzo Romano has reported we are talking to Ben Godfrey from Atlanta...presumably this is the same Ben Godfrey who played for Nodge and Everton...?

Why? He never wanted to come here in the summer. MA said in the past that we only wamt to sign players who want to come here.

We need Latte Lath from Boro as a main striker Philogene has been let down big time by a greedy Villa, with no care whatsoever for the lad's future if he comes here all is well and good, with Ben Godfry we have a very versatile defender CB, RB, R Midfield, also talk of WBA Maha big powerful striker but why don't we look around the South American market Spanish and Portuguese markets
