Town Agree Philogene Fee
Wednesday, 8th Jan 2025 22:12

Town have agreed a fee of £20 million plus add-ons with Aston Villa for forward Jaden Philogene, who is set to undergo a medical and complete the formalities regarding his permanent move to the Blues on Thursday.

The 22-year-old has agreed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Town and will become the club’s second signing of the January transfer window.

Philogene has long been a Town target with links first surfacing in the summer of 2023 before the England U21 international moved from Aston Villa to Hull City.

In July last year, the Blues had agreed a joint-deal with the Tigers for the forward and teammate Jacob Greaves with the Philogene side of the proposed move understood to be worth £18 million and the player having agreed personal terms at Portman Road.

However, his former club Villa had 72 hours within which to exercise matching rights as part of the deal they had agreed with the Tigers the previous summer, which they did and Philogene returned to Villa Park for £13 million - the Midlanders also taking advantage of their 30 per cent sell-on - with the forward signing a five-year contract.

But since then Philogene has made only three starts - two in the Premier League - and 11 sub appearances.

Town and Everton, another of the clubs interested in the summer, both made approaches at the start of this window with the Blues stealing a march on the Toffeemen.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Londoner agreed to sign following a personal phone call with manager Kieran McKenna.

Philogene, who primarily plays on the left side, will be at the club on Thursday morning to undergo a medical and complete his switch.

The initial fee of £20 million fee is just below the club record figure of £22 million paid to Chelsea for Omari Hutchinson in the summer.

The Blues are in the market for a number of forwards this window with a number nine a priority and two players for the roles behind on the list.

On Friday, Liverpool rebuffed a £16 million offer for Ben Doak, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough, with Crystal Palace also having made a bid.

We understand the Blues are maintaining their pursuit of the 19-year-old with the Eagles similarly continuing their interest with the Reds said to want a fee between £25 and £30 million.

January is quickly becoming my favourite window as a Town fan. Great appointment once again and a sign the survival is definitely not beyond us. You can’t say the club doesn’t back the manager and that’s huge for us and the club

Got him eventually - seems McKenna retained a great desire to sign him, and their conversation was key in him coming here rather than Everton. In KM we trust. Go get Doak and Latte Lath as well now!

Great move if it comes off. A priority for me though is cover/competition for young Mr Delap.

It's a shame we are paying 2 million more 6 months later for a player who hasn't performed in that time period, but the reality is that a 5 year contract at Villa made him worth much more regardless of his performance.

This feels like it was always going to happen eventually.

No shock there, I think was always gonna happen, great business all round that's 2 players in who have both played Champions league this season.
What a squad we are building,
J Clarke and Philligene for left
Hutchinson or Broadhead on right if we get Doak he can play either
Szmodicks in 10 or new signing
Delap and new striker plus Hurst
Some team

Great signing without a doubt.. Its fantastic to be in the position of being able to get the players we want, its sending out a statment of intent too and letting other clubs know were a PL team who are here to stay

Brilliant news, more excellent work by Ashton & Co,to get him in,ahead of other clubs.
Will be a very welcome addition down that right side and he will hopefully settle quickly, with some familiar faces in Delap,Greaves and Hutchinson.

Initial fee of £20m?! That's a big profit for Villa for a signing who didn't work out for them. It shows our ambition to spend that kind of money, and with Hutchinson being out the timing is good. Welcome Jaden!

He’s just a guy who claims that villa aren’t the one
But the kid is now our son
He says we are the one
Cos the kid is now our son

On another note, I believe Chelsea have the youngest average age (23) in the premier league,if Philogene does sign,we probably won't be far behind them.
All bodes well for a great future.

Philogene is predominantly a left winger but can play both sides and in middle. Doak (pray we get him) also plays on both sides so with Philiogene, J Clark, Hutchinson, Ogbene, Broadhead, Delap, Hurst, Szmodicks and New striker our attack is looking great and our subs will be like for like in terms speed and skill to not give defenders peace.
For England it's Philigene on left, Hutchinson on right and Delap in middle
Also great players getting offers from other prem clubs are choosing Ipswich, I think people recognise the ambition of the club.

For it to be a permanent move McKenna must be convinced. £20 million - Town mean business.

I've just heard that Villa have come in with a matching offer and are buying him back again.

Keeps with the plan of signing young talent as well. Long gone are the sad days of real blokes and broken down old crocks wanting a last payday. There really is a plan for the future now!!!!!!
