Philogene Deal Looking Closer After Villa Complete Malen Signing
Tuesday, 14th Jan 2025 18:14

Town’s protracted deal to sign Aston Villa forward Jaden Philogene has moved a step closer to completion with the Midlanders having confirmed the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen and with the player having been pictured in Suffolk.

Earlier today, Villa boss Unai Emery indicated that finalising the Malen deal was dependent on Philogene’s departure to the Blues going through.

Villa are understood to be paying the Bundesliga club £20 million for Dutch international Malen.

Town and the Villans agreed a £20 million-plus-add-ons fee for long-time Blues target Philogene last Wednesday with the 22-year-old agreeing a four-and-a-half-year deal and passing a medical.

However, the deal had stalled with some details relating to the switch remaining unsettled, but with the expectation that it would eventually get done.

Malen’s signing having been confirmed would appear to suggest that those aspects of the move have now been completed and Town an announcement is finally close.

Separately, there are Philogene appears to have been pictured at Milsoms, Kesgrave this evening.

Philogene has long been a Town target with links first surfacing in the summer of 2023 before the England U21 international moved from Aston Villa to Hull City.

In July last year, the Blues had agreed a joint-deal with the Tigers for the forward and teammate Jacob Greaves with the Philogene side of the proposed move understood to be worth £18 million and the player having agreed personal terms at Portman Road.

However, his former club Villa had 72 hours within which to exercise matching rights as part of the deal they had agreed with the Tigers the previous summer, which they did and Philogene returned to Villa Park for £13 million - the Midlanders also taking advantage of their 30 per cent sell-on - with the forward signing a five-year contract.

But Philogene made only three starts - two in the Premier League - and 11 sub appearances for Villa in the first half of the season and speculation regarding a swift exit began to surface before the January window opened before Town made their move.

He will need another medical as the last one must be out of date by now.

Patience required for the Szmodics transfer, patience required for Philogene transfer.

Looking at the career statistics Villa appear to have the better deal at that price, Philogene's opportunity to prove them wrong ...

In reality it seems that any delay in this transfer has been caused by Villa refusing to let him go until they had a replacement. Frustrating but we would probably do the same especially in a tricky January transfer window. It really is a case of dominoes falling into place. There have been a lot of unfair comments about the lad questioning his commitment to join us. We need to get right behind him and cheer him on. Bottom line is he is a very talented young footballer that will improve the starting 11.

some really need to swerve there own head space. If it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen. If it does it does. More important things in life, I think :-)

Let’s look on the positive side here folks. We are about to match / surpass our transfer record on a long term McKenna target, who is a current England U21 international. He could well turn out to be the extra firepower which keeps us up. Transfers are sometimes simple and sometimes more complicated. It doesn’t matter, as long as we get our man, which we definitely will. Let’s enjoy the signing of a player who was a top performer in the Championship last season.

Would be great to get this over the line with two games in quick succession approaching.

We’re not dealing with free transfers or small fees these days, I guess it’s inevitable that these deals take a while.

Saxon why is it inevitable ? Villa agreed fee for Malen yesterday signed today. We conducted the medical last week and are still waiting. Hope it gets sorted soon one way or another so we can either use him or move on.

U actually find it amazing that fans on here startxquestioning a players intent to sign just bcse tge deal takes a bit of time to get done. Do you really think other clubs sign players in 5 minutes. It's likely villa have been working on the Malen signing for a while. Andxmaybe villa, fans have been saying the same as some of our fans about the length of time its taken. Have to remember , we only get to hear of who other clubs are signing much later than we do, our own club. Patience is a virtue.

Good bit of business by Villa 20 million for Philosan and then purchasing a Dutch international for the same price .

Tbf Philogene was some player when he was at Hull. It's just Villa who are the grade A pricks in all this. They've used the boy like a pimp....they should be ashamed

Linkboy - We're paying for a much longer contract, by all accounts.

No to Whittaker then lol, everyone wanted him at start season, well let's see who we get, strikers is difficult, but we need one can't rely on Hurst fitness or injuries and Hammadi nowhere near, thought Whittaker fits mould and can play across all 3 slots but maybe we need an experienced striker it's a tough one.
Any striker suggestions?

Trust the process LeeJames. How many of us said "we really should be going for that Delap geezer, a snip at £15m". Our guys will have targets in mind, and no doubt it won't be what any of us are expecting!
