Burgess Linked With La Liga Move
Monday, 7th Apr 2025 21:35

La Liga Girona are in advanced talks regarding the signing of Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess, according to reports in Spain.

Burgess, 29, is out of contract with Town at the end of the season and, according to Marca, is being targeted by Girona, who are 15th in the La Liga table having reached the Champions League last season, with the Australia international said to be receptive to a move to Spain.

The Aberdeen-born defender joined the Blues in the summer of 2021 from Accrington Stanley, signing a contract which ran to last summer when Town triggered a one-year extension on that deal.

The one-time Fulham academy youngster has been a key player on the Blues’ climb from League One to the Premier League, making a total of 112 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring five goals.

This season, following the signing of Jacob Greaves from Hull City, Burgess has been in and out of the side but has still made 12 starts and one sub appearance.

Been a great signing for us and if this happens I personally am genuinely pleased for him he deserves it. A top pro in every sense of the word!

And as for signing players who are well past their sell by date, never been Km’s remit! I can see Muric going out on loan dont think we will be able to sell him!, well certainly not for the amount we paid!

Shame to see him imo, but who can blame him? We really need to make a flying start on firming up the squad for next season. The January window was a flop, another one would be a disaster. Hopefully there is a plan in place already so all systems go as soon as hopefully. Delap is off, maybe Hutchinson and Davis. Luongo, Burgess, and Muric (hopefully). Philogene linked with a loan move to Turkey. Maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad idea. That leaves McKenna of course. I’d like to think that’s already sorted!8

We must offer him a decent contract - but clearly if the man wants to play in Spain then that's what he will choose.

Leejames99. I know h keep defending Muric almost every post u put on here. And I'm not one of those whove totally slated him, in fact I've defended him at times too. But he's not very young. He's 26. Cresswell wouldn't be a bad signing for sure. However, Ashley young, sorry , he'll be 40 by the time next season starts, so no thankyou. As for Lindelof? There's no way we could afford his wages in the championship. He's on £120k per week at utd.

Still only 29..no brainer to give him a new 3 year deal..will be invaluable in the championship..has never let us down & doesn't spend half the match rolling around looking for free kicks like Greaves does.

Burgess is a solid defender who is dependable but this would be a decent move for him . Greaves has been bought to be our left sided centre back so his game time will be limited which is probably not what he wants at this stage in his career. Greaves started well but after his injury he’s struggled to find his rhythm. Good luck whatever decision you make

Be sorry to him go,he's always been dependable when called upon, whatever happens he will always be fondly remembered as one of our heroes from the back to back promotion teams.
On another note according to the transfer talk site,Juventus are showing interest in Leif Davis as a replacement for Cambiaso, who is on his way in the summer.

So sad to see him go if true. He has been our most consistent defender throughout 3 amazing years. However we have to think not just 1 but 2 or 3 years ahead, and Cam won't be the man in 2027-8 I suspect.

@lecco84
Why be rude? I'm older than you if 84 is your year of birth I'm 48!
@Blues1 I just go on stats when it comes to Muric and don't think he was treated fairly by some fans, 26 is quite young still for a keeper, we just conceeded way less and gained most of our points with him in goal and he kept us in games we could of lost, the only game we actually lost points on from his mistake was Southampton but that was only first goal.
I think because he was playing that pass out from back nonsense his mistakes looked calamitous like Palmer on Sat. See what happens with him, I think he and Palmer stay, be interesting to see how he is in pre season.
As for Phillogene he will be mega in Championship look how he and J Clarke tore Coventry apart.
Delap won't definately go, just paper talk and alot depends on Man City situation.
In regards to Prem players, I gave those 3 names because some fans said we lacked Prem experience, and despite Ashley Young age he still plays every week and I personally think someone like that would be great from H Clarke to learn from and he is on free transfer that was all same with Cresswell he still plays in Prem and Townsend could do well with him at LB, I think we have young lad in under 21s from Chelsea who is LB too.
I think Burgess has done enough to get new contract but if not I think an warhorse defender to come into the squad would be great for Greavez etc.

Be interesting Summer

LeeJames wants us to sign 3 players in their mid to late 30s like the bad old days and calls anyone who disagrees ridiculous is priceless.
I'm sure he'll spit his dummy over my comment, I wait with baited breath.

Can't let him go...McK hasn't played him enough, other than the Man City home game he's played fairly well.

@Skip73
Thanks for the bait, I didn't say I wanted to sign them, I said they are on a free transfer and still play first team in Prem and their experience to the likes of H Clarke and Greaves could be invaluable, nobody bats an eye at Morsy 33 jogging and pointing in midfield. Which experienced Prem players do you think we should of or could of signed then? Or you one of those who only wants the beloved league 1 squad to stay forever?
So example available on free transfer in summer in midfield and updront is Will Hughes, Tom Cairny, Christian Erikkson, James Milner, Danny Ings, Vinicious, Callum Wilson, Calverton Lewin (20 mill) you wouldn't want any of those? There are loads good Championship players out of contract too.
Our back 4 I imagine will be H Clarke, O'Shea, Greaves, Townsend

Leejames99. Muric cost us 6 points. 1 v Brentford, 2,v Bournemouth and 3 against southampton. Also cost us 2 goals at man city, tho unlikely itxactuslly coat us points that day. Certainly didn't help tho. Was definitely at fault for both goals in that game. Young is only on the bench most games btw. Rarely starts games. And as I say, will be 40 before the start of next season. A bit too old, especially for the demands of the championship.

I’d be really sorry to see him go, he’s been our best defender especially as he had to do half of Davis’s job as well as his own

Should have been first choice all season.

Leejames99 added 13:05 - Apr 8
@blues1 I just watched the highlights of Brentford how did Muric cost us a point?
First goal was Davis fault out of position, a penalty, a second Davis leaving space nowhere to be seen and Mbeumo should of never got that shot away in first place and who was marking him...Davis. keepers do get beat from range and say that game was on Clarke, 2-0 up gave away a pen and got sent off.
Bournemouth their equaliser was Muric fault but the winner again a shot from range on Davis side which Muric saved but they took rebound, poor defending.
Southampton first goal Muric fault 2nd was Davis unmarked player, Muric saves and they get rebound defender not following their man but shot should not happen in first place.
He earned us more than 6 anyway the two games vs Wolves and Tottenham we would not of won if not for Muric, the point all Brighton, Villa etc
Man City game yes 2 blunders and that was him sentenced as rubbish.
Southampton game he was getting booed by home fans.
I know those players old I was meaning as they on frees an experienced Prem player around the place is good for the young lads and as back up. Maybe Phillips likes it here. Who knows anyone's guess

He’s been an outstanding defender. Committed, reads the game well, and better distribution than he’s given credit. Hard to believe he’s started so few games, he was a rock against Man Utd. It’s been such a confused mess of team selection, the first time KM has had huge money, and a significant number of players coming in. With only an unchanged side once in the league, it’s been chaotic management, if we’re honest, and Cam is a victim of that. He even put Harry Kane in his back pocket for Australia, he couldn’t have done anymore.., but he didn’t cost huge money, isn’t on a huge contract, and we likely wouldn’t be able to move the new signings on if we wanted to, because they’ve been so poor. He’s a victim of muddled talent ID, poor team management, and not being a big signing. At 29 his best years are ahead of him, and he’ll do brilliant at the very highest level. Good luck Cam.., ran through walls for us.

I think Burgess will get a new contract, it's all paper talk, he will only go if he wants too, Kmk be mad to let him go, an international, experienced building good relationship with O'Shea, its a squad game Greaves and Woolfenden just have to rotate, Greaves and O'Shea can play left and right also. I think he stays. Tunazabe not so sure. He has been good but too injury prone, H Clarke be fine there with Johnson or O'Shea to cover. Need a new solid squad for return to Prem and Burgess should be in that.

Gforce added 13:49 - Apr 8
I really hope H Clarke is not our first choice right back next season, he's already cost Sheffield Utd 3 goals this season.
If we want top 2 next season, we need better, not good enough I'm afraid.
Hopefully Tuanzebe stays + a new signing.

Leejames99 added 13:53 - Apr 8
@Gforce oh cripes never knew that thought he'd been injured, yes need better then, perhaps Tunazabe will get new deal.

Harry Clarke wasn't good enough for the Championship, let alone the Prem. Let's not hang our hat on him getting us promoted.
If Burgess contract ends this summer then he would have been able to negotiate with other clubs from January, so this isn't merely paper talk. Feel sorry for him, should have been an ever present this season.
Can we put this Muric rubbish to bed, the manager has binned him (too late, should have been after Brentford) and had to buy a new keeper. He will be on his way if anyone is foolish enough to buy him, perhaps we should persuade Leeds to take him, they need a keeper.

Leejames99 added 16:03 - Apr 8
See what happens re Muric, I still rate him, 5 mistakes is nothing and Brentford was on H Clarke but anyway, I would think Palmer be number one maybe but I wouldn't be surprised if Muric stays or maybe he will go abroad who knows, surely Slicker must be nearing a chance somewhere he may be crucial to Delap staying another season.
Walton will definitely go out of the 4 he is first to go. Too much on Muric to take a hit, Palmer experienced in Championship and Slicker tipped for top. Just to end the Muric debate , Palmer was signed because Walton was injured and we needed experience who was game ready and Muric had his confidence shattered by our own fans, who don't want anyone to replace the League 1 squad.
Our worst player this season who should of been dropped aside Burns and Morsy is Davis, I watched back the highlights of all our games and the amount of goals conceeded late from the space left by him is unbelievable, its on Mckenna too, when you watch back and we are in the lead and chasing more and then Fdavis stuck in no man's lad its awful, we have dropped 25 points from winning positions, shut shop on those games we be on 45 points now. Mckenna for me has to take some blame, firstly refusing to change formation ever, not playing Davis in front of Townsend, not trying 4-4-2 and not getting a strong midfielder in Jan and putting all his eggs on Flynne Downes
For me now I really think he should convince Delap to stay another year, convince Cajuste to say, give Tunazabe and Burgess new contracts and for the last game at home play the league 1 heroes who will undoubtedly be sold so the fans can say bye, shed a tear, and we can move on.

Of course, I wish we could keep him. But his game time has been limited, he has never let us down, and his contract is up. If true, the chance of an adventure in another country at this stage of his career would probably be too good to turn down, and I wish him all the best.
I think we might be surprised (and disappointed) at the number of players we might lose when we go down, not to mention the possibility of losing our manager. Tottenham will likely want to replace Postecoglou, and Kieran has history at the club. On other hand, maybe there will also be some interesting additions, so fingers crossed.
