Burgess Linked With La Liga Move
Monday, 7th Apr 2025 21:35

La Liga Girona are in advanced talks regarding the signing of Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess, according to reports in Spain.

Burgess, 29, is out of contract with Town at the end of the season and, according to Marca, is being targeted by Girona, who are 15th in the La Liga table having reached the Champions League last season, with the Australia international said to be receptive to a move to Spain.

The Aberdeen-born defender joined the Blues in the summer of 2021 from Accrington Stanley, signing a contract which ran to last summer when Town triggered a one-year extension on that deal.

The one-time Fulham academy youngster has been a key player on the Blues’ climb from League One to the Premier League, making a total of 112 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring five goals.

This season, following the signing of Jacob Greaves from Hull City, Burgess has been in and out of the side but has still made 12 starts and one sub appearance.

Will be a sad day if Cameron leaves us. A very good player and brave to overcome such a bad facial injury to continue his career. Best wishes for the future.

As if I wasn't grumpy enough, now I have a summer of transfer rumours to look forward to. And not the good type either... #itid

Ross Barkley would of been a good shout, that's kind of player I mean, someone who is on a free, maybe wants to go into coaching and could be good cover if needed but give their experience of Prem to others, like Trippier or Ings, Milner.
Its great we have all the young prospects but o do think we need a bit of experience too.
I have an inkling if Leeds don't want him that Phillips may come back, and I didn't know this but I read today that Town had an obligation to buy Cajuste if stay in Prem but also an option to buy if go down, he for me is a must, I think Kmk can rebuild midfield around him, seems to love it here, he or Delap will be player of season I guess.
I also read today that Delap is happy to stay at Town and progress and play and doesn't want to warm a bench, he likes it at Town and he has great friends here.
I think he may stay for 1 more season, maybe West Ham or Spurs be good for him but I really think if anything we should just loan him to a Prem club, he won't want to go back to Man City and unless they are relegated his only 2 choices are stay or City, but if City are relegated, then we would stay up if we keep Leicester away from us, in which case I doubt Delap would be for sale. 5 year deal with Town.
What a thing that we are all disheartened but within the next 7 games Man City go down. That would be epic.
I still think whatever happens we are in a good place as a club, whatever players go or whatever manager we have the foundations for success are there, I think KMK owes us at least next season as he got hefty new salary to stay and is the only lower team manager to not be relegated.
He is a great coach but still has some things to learn as a manager I think in terms of a bit of passion on the touchline.

What’s happened to Ben Godfrey - has he retired? I believe Burgess is very decent - would we have had more points the board?

I'm sure Manchester City will get a points deduction but those who make the decisions will work out the total at the end of the season and ensure they finish 4th from bottom.
Citeh are too big, too successful and too rich to be relegated in the eyes of those in charge.
And agreed Alphawhisky, not a chance of Delap being here next year.
He owes us nothing.
He never gives less than 100% and has run himself into the ground for us this season.
A young player who wants to improve and he won't want to be doing that against Wrexham on a wet January evening in North Wales.

Thanks for post, why won't Man City get big points deduction, all signs point to exactly that just hope its this season, we should know soon.
If Man City did then its possible Phillips would but I'd say Leeds more likely and I'd rather Cajuste with Szmodicksand and 2 others, got Humphries too.

But let's say your right and Man City just get a fine or not guilty - Ipswich Town bought Delap on a 5 year deal for approx 20 million so he is ourplayer under contract.
So if the rumours are right and there is a 40 million release clause and the player wants to go and Ipswich agree a fee with say Chelsea then before he can go there Man City have the first option to buy him back for 40 million minus the 20% from sell on so 32 million, if Man City take up that option its then down to the player who then can only go back to Man City or stay at Town.
If Man City are happy for Town to sell then the price could be anything from 40 mill up, that is just the release amount so Chelsea could activate the 40 mill but Man Utd offer 45 million etc then it's down to Town accepting the bids and the player choosing the club he wants to go too and then Man City just take 20% of any fee Town get.

The sticking point is this for Delap, as he is from the Man City Academy any sale of Delap is considered pure profit so it would be mad business wise for them to let Delap go to Chelsea for 40 million say and only get 20% 8 million on top of the 20 million paid by Town when they can buy him back at 32 million or match the highest bid minus 20% and sell him thieves either immediately or once is stock rises even more.

So effectively Town would get the fee 32 million let's say so we make 12 mill profit on him if we paid 20.
Man City can then sell him if they want for 40 million and that's is pure profit.

It's exactly what Villa did with Phillogene and what Man Utd want to do with Mainoo and Garnacheo and Newcastle and Chelsea did by swapping players, what saints will do with Dybling etc.
Of course also if Man City stay up then they won't want Delap going to a rival after the mistake they made with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

So many its and buts at the moment, best situation would be a points deduction but if you know that's not happening then it will be interesting to see what Delap wants to do, if I was his agent I'd be telling him to not decide until after the Euros as a good Tournament and his fee will go even higher, good position for Delap considering he only scored 6 or 7 last year at Hull.

Always a pleasure Alpha Whisky

Good question, ImAbeliever, what did happen to Godfrey? Did he tell the manager to Foxtrot Oscar? Does have anyone have the inside track?

Well despite Man City wealth of owners they cheated, and the Premier League has to make an example, their stature makes no difference if the Premier League, as they should, follow what the hugely rich Rangers and Juventus endured with relegation, if Man City get away with their will be uproar from the other clubs.
We don't know when this will come up out but we must pip Leicester to third bottom purely in case they are relegated or are in future and it transpires we would of finished 4th bottom so it's not alot but could be very important to get third bottom.
If Delap goes I'd take the money and run, his goal record last few seasons is not special, Adebayo got 10 for Luton last year in Prem this year quiet. He isn't the finished article by a long shot and if you think Calvert Lewin is only worth 20 mill if we get 4p plus we could get Cajuste and a top striker with change, be interesting to see, I can't see him going Man Utd, Chelsea, if I was a betting man (I am a bit) I'd go Man City first but if not Spurs or West Ham but I still think he might stay, its happened elsewhere. Look at Brewster tipped for top, Broja, Nkietah they could of all been at Town, done nothing, he might just want to stay on the Ipswich journey for a season.

Have read today that the Burgess move isn't as advanced as has been suggested, but that he is just one of a number of players they are looking at for that position. He was offered a new contract here tho, and so far, has turned it down. So I suspect his agent made it known there were other options on the table. So may not be definite that he's going to leave.

Burgess has become a super player & one we should be keeping. He’d be first on the team sheet every match for me. He’s a leader & would make a good captain. Don’t let him slip away please!
