Burgess Joins Swansea Saturday, 14th Jun 2025 15:15 Out-of-contract Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess has joined fellow Championship side Swansea City on a three-year deal.
Burgess, 29, had been offered terms by Town with talks having been ongoing for some months but without an agreement being reached.
The Australian international, whose side secured a place in the 2026 World Cup finals by beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah on Tuesday, had been linked with La Liga clubs Girona and Valencia, as well as Rangers in his native Scotland.
The one-time Fulham trainee spend 2024/25 vying with Jacob Greaves for the left-sided central defensive role and may have felt his changes of making the Socceroos squad for the finals might be hampered if he wasn’t playing regularly for Town during the season ahead.
“We are delighted that Cameron will be joining us at Swansea City, head coach Alan Sheehan told the Swans website.
“He is an experienced and consistent performer that has seen him rise up through the divisions in the last few years and become a full international.
“During our conversations Cameron really bought in to what we are trying to do at Swansea and I believe he will be a great addition for us on and off the pitch driving standards throughout the club, and we look forward to getting to work with him.”
Director of football Richard Montague added: “We are very pleased to have been able to add a player of Cameron’s pedigree and experience to our squad ahead of the new season.
“To bring in a player who has recently played Premier League football and been part of a successful period at his previous club is very positive.
“There was considerable interest in Cameron from a number of clubs, and we are delighted he felt that Swansea City was the right choice for him.”
Global head of analytics and recruitment Adam Worth said: “Moving into this summer we were aware of the need to try and ensure we complement the youthful element of our squad with players who are proven performers at this level.
“Cameron undoubtedly meets that criteria, and arrives with us fresh from playing in the Premier League with Ipswich.
“We are excited to see what he can bring to Swansea City in the coming season and the years ahead.”
Burgess joined the Blues for £750,000 from Accrington Stanley in August 2021 and went on to make 116 starts and 11 sub appearances, scoring five goals.
A member of the back-to-back promotion-winning sides, it was his goal at Coventry which all but secured a place in the Premier League ahead of the final weekend of that campaign.
Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Darren O'Dea has joined the Swans as assistant head coach, while another one-time Town loan defender Richard Stearman is set to continue as first-team coach.

Oh my... That's an absolute shocker, and I am gutted. Geographically, Swansea could not be farther away from Ipswich unless you like to swim. I wonder who he's trying to avoid?

Disappointed, but I'm guessing a 3-year contract was the tipping point.

Here we go again....so called football experts not understanding how the modern game works and turning their backs on the management team thar provided the recent success...the PL is hard...we went one step too far too early...get real.. and as for the disrespect shown to Swansea that is disgraceful...remember where we cane from..Swansea have new progressive owners and could be a threat next season....they are building just as we did....Burge did a good job for us..but he has to look after his interests just as we have to look after our own... Judge us..KMc et al ..Burge and Swansea in May 2027....

See all the football geniuses on here are not happy. If we go up next year would you want to rely on a 32 year old centre back in the PL? Greaves or a replacement is the answer. When we go back up we need to be stronger.

Magic 8. Correct Swansea could be a threat so let's give them our best centre back! Braveblue he is 29 not 32, Liverpool just won the Premier league with a 35 Yr old van dyke. People totally justified in being upset by this mistake.

To many people are taken in by the rumours on here regarding transfers. The reaction to Burgess departing reminds me of the time Tommy Smith left way over the top and what did he achieve when he left not much and i think you will find Burgess will do well at Swansea because he's a steady championship defender no more than that. So calm down every body the club will survive without him. And as we all witnessed at the end of last season there was virtually no negativity directed towards the management whatsoever. But the minority on here can make a lot of noise but im backing McKenna one hundred percent.

Sad to see that so many fans aren’t happy about Burgess wanting to provide more security for him and his family with a four year deal. The club ie Swansea is irrelevant. Ipswich were never going to offer a player of his age a four year deal as he’s not the future. He’s been an excellent acquisition who has served his team well. Surely fans should wish him the best. Maybe lack of understanding ???

It does make me laugh that so many people comment without reading the story above. Take note... 1) He is 29 2) He signed a 3 year contract Now we have 2 inferior centre back in O'Shea and Greaves. I hope I am wrong but I feel we are a weaker team now than we were in the 2023/24 Championship promotion team after breaking up the bad of brothers and signing too many poor individuals last summer.

Seems like the club didn't want him. There was that period when he couldn't even get into the matchday squad and McKenna had to come out and say he didn't put centre halves on the bench (his nose definitely got longer after that one). As so many say, he is better than Greaves but had to watch him being selected ahead of himself. Must have been hard to take. We get relegated, he gets a good offer and he goes, good luck to him.

So, are they all on holiday at PR or will we start getting some positivity coming out soon? As for Cam, all the best for your next job mate.
