Town and Boro Agree Hackney Fee
Tuesday, 29th Jul 2025 22:33

Town and Middlesbrough have agreed a fee for midfielder Hayden Hackney, TWTD understands.

A fortnight ago, TWTD revealed that the Blues have been chasing Hackney all summer but that they had stepped up their interest and made an approach to the Teessiders.

We understand the clubs have now agreed a fee below the £20 million figure reported elsewhere over the weekend with Boro ultimately set to receive £15 million after add-ons.

However, the player is still biding his time before making a decision on his future with Premier League interest having been anticipated this summer. However, none has, so far, been forthcoming.

The Blues have spoken to the player regarding terms, again significantly below what was reported at the weekend, having been given permission by the Teessiders.

On Saturday, Hackney was left out of the Boro side which drew 2-2 with Rangers at Ibrox due to a minor injury, which manager Rob Edwards insisted had nothing to do with the Redcar-born schemer’s future.

“H felt a little bit of pain in the back of his knee yesterday and at the minute, we can’t risk anything,” he told Teesside Live.

“We wouldn’t want to do that with any player at this time. It’s nothing to do with anything transfer-wise. There was genuine pain there and Reidy [head physio Adam Reid] said it’s just not worth the risk.

“We kept him at home where he’s able to get some treatment. Listen, we have got good players and there is always going to be interest and speculation. But this one was genuinely just a bit of pain in the knee and is genuinely nothing to worry about.”

Despite having signed Dutchman Azor Matusiwa from Rennes in France, the Blues are in the market for more central midfielders with loanees Jens Cajuste and Kalvin Phillips having moved on at the end of the season, Massimo Luongo released before joining Millwall and skipper Sam Morsy switching to Kuwait SC earlier in the week.

One-time Scunthorpe loanee Hackney, who is contracted until the summer of 2027, came through the youth system at Boro, his local club, having joined the club as an U10.

He was part of the England U21s squad which won the European Championships in Slovakia last month alongside Town forward Omari Hutchinson.

@Portman pie - Nonsense. Young was reportedly on £50k a week at Villa a number of years ago, but will be on nothing like that here.

Re: Hackney - Edmundson & Carrick will have a word for us & convince him. He'll come.
1st vs 11th position according to the bookies. I know which one I'd go for.

Phil - stop using the word 'schemer'. It can get in the sea along with your penchant for the term 'glovesman'!!

Hurry up time is moving fast. If he doesn’t sign surely other midfielders are out there who would want to sign.

So, we've agreed a fee but he doesn't seem that interested in coming to PR.
That's what I'm reading.
Maybe I'm just having one of my pessimistic days.

Poet. I wouldn’t assume it’s a media issue.., they publish what they’re told, yes for clickbait, but there will be a club/agent source behind those numbers, and if they are are exaggerated it’s to meet an agenda.

An agent trying to set aspirations perhaps, or even US trying to ward off potential premier league interest.

With our sales, we will have up to £80-100 million coming in .., although we need to be careful, it could actually put us in a better financial position than some lower premier league clubs. In a one off deal at least.

Some are struggling with PSR and aren’t selling players like we have to. We got Delap through last years accounts, Hutchinson will go through this years, and Broadhead, so we might actually be able to put a better package together.

At least having Everton etc thinking - well we can’t get to £20 million and £35k a week when we need lots of other signings too.

PSR might be our friend for this deal .., shame Delap, Hutchinson, Broadhead have to go, but that’s the consequence of relegation. At least it has provided some dry powder.

It’s obvious the package will need to be significant, but suspect we can get there.., might mean more signings are loans, but he does look a great prospect.

Like others have said. I will not be watching his highlights reel before he has signed a Ipswich Town contract. Touch wood.

I hope we can get him but I expect him to go to a Premier League club. If he does join a Premier League team he's unlikely to be a regular starter though. Hopefully, we can persuade him to join us with a clause that he can leave for a Premier League side next summer if we're not promoted.

I'm looking at these highlights (the first couple of minutes only) and am thinking that this is what I thought Jack Taylor was brought in to do....he looks a bit quicker than JT but not a lot!
However, the both of them will certainly be more mobile than Luongo, Morsy and Phillips so let's get it done, please.

Portman Pie - Ashley Young is on a free for just one season so £50k a week is very possible, different wage structure to Hackney so cannot be compared

ITFC would be a good move for Hackney (not just sitting on the bench at MU or being loaned out to another Championship club).
He will improve under our manager and will be playing Premiership football in 12 months time.

It would never have happened under the Cobbolds indeed neither would Thatcher, Bowyer et ai.

Oldburian, just curious, what would never have happened under the Cobbolds? I'm just guessing going by your username, you are one of the older posters on here, like me. I will never forget what they did for this club, and it should never be forgotten, but time marches on and waits for no man ( or woman ) .

He needs to make his mind up because if he’s waiting on premier league clubs to come in we should move on to another target. I hope Ashton gets this deal wrapped up before the end of the week as the last thing we want is another Broja situation or Jaden first time around. I would expect by cease of play Friday I would have signed (if not then I doubt he’s coming). Broadhead will be gone by the weekend watch this space, sounds like Wolfy is going too.
